Book Reflections and Undercurrents

Download or read book Reflections and Undercurrents written by Eric Denker and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1880s, James McNeil Whistler revolutionized the way artists represented the city of Venice by producing images that moved away from the major tourist monuments to depict the squares, back alleys, and isolated canals that only residents knew. His novel approach inspired generations of printmakers who worked in Venice, and this book celebrates their work. Ernest David Roth (1879-1964) was one of the most significant American etchers of the first half of the 20th century, and his most important achievements are the views he did of Venice between 1905 and 1941. Roth and his friends John Taylor Arms and Louis Rosenberg formed the nucleus of a circle of American etchers that created a timeless vision of European and American cityscapes and landscapes in the 1920s and 1930s, and their Venetian views are at the center of their accomplishment.

Book The Water Mirror

Download or read book The Water Mirror written by Kai Meyer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Venice, magic is not unusual. Merle is apprenticed to a magic mirror maker, and Serafin—a boy who was once a master thief—works for a weaver of magic cloth. Merle and Serafin are used to the mermaids who live in the canals of the city and to the guards who patrol the streets on living stone lions. Merle herself possesses something magical: a mirror whose surface is water. She can reach her whole arm into it and never get wet. But Venice is under siege by the Egyptian Empire; its terrifying mummy warriors are waiting to strike. All that protects the Venetians is the Flowing Queen. Nobody knows who or what she is—only that her power flows through the canals and keeps the Egyptians at bay. When Merle and Serafin overhear a plot to capture the Flowing Queen, they are catapulted into desperate danger. They must do everything they can to rescue the Queen and save the city—even if it means getting help from the Ancient Traitor himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the depiction of Venice by artists, it's a high bar that's been set, but Adam Van Doren, grandson of the Pulitzer-prize-winning poet Mark Van Doren, convincingly confronts the competition in this charming memoir, a verbal and visual account of his love affair with the city. His story is personal; like all other artists, he sees the city with and through his own eyes, but he is also well-informed historically. He laces his tour with information, opinion, and citation. With Van Doren as guide, the reader's tour of the city is rich and convincing, filled with the presence of illustrious predecessors. With an informed preface by the scholar Theodore Rabb and a charming foreword by Simon Winchester, with 23 full-color drawings by the author/artist, and even six pages of commendably lucid notes on the personalities and structures discussed, this is a book that will proudly take its place alongside the many others that have celebrated this city for centuries.

Book excerpt: Bernardo Bellotto's magnificent View of the Grand Canal provides a rich visual record of life in eighteenth-century Venice. This painting--one of the most popular in the Getty Museum--is so sweeping in its scope and so detailed that it requires repeated viewings to take in its portrait of daily life in Venice in the 1780s. This small book presents Bellotto's great painting in a series of beautiful details that allow the reader to examine the painting closely and enjoy the colorful and busy goings-on of Venetian life captured so unforgettably by Bellotto. The book jacket unfolds to become a small poster of the painting in its entirety. Accompanying these delightful images is a lyrical essay by noted American poet Mark Doty. Together, Bellotto's painting and Doty's prose make for an unforgettable encounter with the art and life of Venice.
