Book excerpt: The forests of Borneo have experienced loss and degradation at one of the highest rates worldwide, with severe consequences for biodiversity. In this thesis a unique set of Bornean orangutan nest observations, climate, habitat and threat data were used to estimate past abundance loss of orangutan populations across the island but also to identify potential drivers. A spatially-explicit deforestation model was adapted to project forest loss into the future and to understand where orangutan strongholds will be most likely threatened. Looking forward, better integration of stakeholders, different data sources and novel methods will have to become a key element of the successful monitoring strategies that underpin effective conservation. The findings and suggestions will help to steer future priorities for orangutan monitoring and conservation and will contribute to tackle the unprecedented loss of species in this global biodiversity hotspot.

Download or read book The Neglected Ape written by Biruté M.F. Galdikas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The orangutan is the most highly endangered species of great ape. Orangutans are threatened by deforestation, poaching, the illegal pet trade, and the isolation and fragmen tation of dwindling wild populations. Their conservation is impeded by certain aspects of their ecology (e. g. , a rain forest habitat) and certain features of their life history (e. g. , an eight-to twelve-year interbirth interval). Added to the U. S. Endangered Species List in 1970, the orangutan is now clearly on the road to extinction. The number of wild orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra is currently estimated to have decreased to between 12,300 and 20,571 individuals. Only 2% of original orangutan habitat is protected and some of these areas are now being destroyed. Clearly, attention to ecology, demography, censusing, rehabilitation, and conservation is essential if the orangutan is to survive in the wild beyond the next century. The protection of orangutans is a complex, multifaceted problem, involving such pressing issues as human poverty, overpopulation, and the economic development of Southeast Asia. Although the orangutan has been placed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), more orangutans were sold illegally in Taiwan between 1990 and 1993 than are housed in all the world's zoos. In the past, scientific and public attention has centered on the African apes. For this reason, the sole Asian great ape, the orangutan, has been called the "neglected ape.

Book Science and Conservation in African Forests

Download or read book Science and Conservation in African Forests written by Richard Wrangham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests need apes as much as the apes need the forests. They are the gardeners of the forest - keystone species in the ecology of African and Southeast Asian forests, dispersing seeds, creating light gaps and pruning branch-tips whilst feeding. Their habitat comprises two of the planet's three major tropical forest blocks that are essential for global climate regulation. But the economic pressures that are destroying ape habitats are much greater than current available conservation finance. This unique case study from the Kibale national park illustrates how biological research has had diverse consequences for conservation. It examines effects on habitat management, community relations, ecotourism and training. Lessons learned from this project over the last 20 years will inspire researchers and conservationists to work together to promote biodiversity through field projects.

Book Best Practice Guidelines for the Surveys and Monitoring of Great Ape Populations

Download or read book Best Practice Guidelines for the Surveys and Monitoring of Great Ape Populations written by and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the website: The IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group is publishing new guidelines for surveys and monitoring of great ape populations. These guidelines address a need which has existed since great ape studies began -- the challenge of collecting consistently high-quality data for comparison between a wide variety of sites, and often across many years. This need is driven less by academic interest than by the urgent demands of field-based conservation. The maelstrom of threats which now endanger all the great apes must be addressed by immediate action on every scale: initiatives at individual sites, strategies on the regional and national level, and species-wide action plans and international accords. All of these efforts must be founded on accurate field data -- and to fully understand the impact of specific threats, and to measure if conservation programs are succeeding, it is essential to have baseline density estimates and sustained monitoring of great ape populations. The newest publication in the Best Practice series outlines current approaches to these issues, offering guidance and perspective on choices that must be made by wildlife biologists, site managers, government agencies and the conservation community at large. This report provides an overview of the variety of survey methodologies that have been developed, as well as a decision tree to help select the approach that is best for a particular site or situation, depending on available resources. As a continuation of this report, a series of modules will be made available online, which will present detailed information on survey design, field techniques, analytical approaches, and practical issues such as logistics, finance and standardized reporting. These new IUCN guidelines will help researchers to standardize their data collection and, just as importantly, will allow for improved comparisons between datasets. This will complement the A.P.E.S. database (http://apes.eva.mpg.de), which is intended to serve as a repository for survey data on great apes, and to analyze trends in their populations. These survey and monitoring guidelines, combined with resources available via A.P.E.S., are important steps towards a comprehensive understanding of the conservation status of great apes, at both the population and species level. .

Areas of focus in the report include: freshwater biodiversity, the status of the world s marine species, species susceptibility to climate change impacts, the Mediterranean biodiversity hot spot, and broadening the coverage of biodiversity assessments."

Book Best Practice Guidelines for Great Ape Tourism

Download or read book Best Practice Guidelines for Great Ape Tourism written by Elizabeth J. Macfie and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2010 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Executive summary: Tourism is often proposed 1) as a strategy to fund conservation efforts to protect great apes and their habitats, 2) as a way for local communities to participate in, and benefit from, conservation activities on behalf of great apes, or 3) as a business. A few very successful sites point to the considerable potential of conservation-based great ape tourism, but it will not be possible to replicate this success everywhere. The number of significant risks to great apes that can arise from tourism reqire a cautious approach. If great ape tourism is not based on sound conservation principles right from the start, the odds are that economic objectives will take precedence, the consequences of which in all likelihood would be damaging to the well-being and eventual survival of the apes, and detrimental to the continued preservation of their habitat. All great ape species and subspecies are classified as Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN 2010), therefore it is imperative that great ape tourism adhere to the best practice guidelines in this document. The guiding principles of best practice in great ape tourism are: Tourism is not a panacea for great ape conservation or revenue generation; Tourism can enhance long-term support for the conservation of great apes and their habitat; Conservation comes first--it must be the primary goal at any great ape site and tourism can be a tool to help fund it; Great ape tourism should only be developed if the anticipated conservation benefits, as identified in impact studies, significantly outweigh the risks; Enhanced conservation investment and action at great ape tourism sites must be sustained in perpetuity; Great ape tourism management must be based on sound and objective science; Benefits and profit for communities adjacent to great ape habitat should be maximised; Profit to private sector partners and others who earn income associated with tourism is also important, but should not be the driving force for great ape tourism development or expansion; Comprehensive understanding of potential impacts must guide tourism development. positive impacts from tourism must be maximised and negative impacts must be avoided or, if inevitable, better understood and mitigated. The ultimate success or failure of great ape tourism can lie in variables that may not be obvious to policymakers who base their decisions primarily on earning revenue for struggling conservation programmes. However, a number of biological, geographical, economic and global factors can affect a site so as to render ape tourism ill-advised or unsustainable. This can be due, for example, to the failure of the tourism market for a particular site to provide revenue sufficient to cover the development and operating costs, or it can result from failure to protect the target great apes from the large number of significant negative aspects inherent in tourism. Either of these failures will have serious consequences for the great ape population. Once apes are habituated to human observers, they are at increased risk from poaching and other forms of conflict with humans. They must be protected in perpetuity even if tourism fails or ceases for any reason. Great ape tourism should not be developed without conducting critical feasibility analyses to ensure there is sufficient potential for success. Strict attention must be paid to the design of the enterprise, its implementation and continual management capacity in a manner that avoids, or at least minimises, the negative impacts of tourism on local communities and on the apes themselves. Monitoring programmes to track costs and impacts, as well as benefits, [is] essential to inform management on how to optimise tourism for conservation benefits. These guidelines have been developed for both existing and potential great ape tourism sites that wish to improve the degree to which their programme constributes to the conservation rather than the exploitation of great apes.

Book Population Status Threats and Conservation of Preuss s Red Colobus Piliocolobus Preussi and Other Diurnal Primates in the Ndokbou Forest Littoral Region Cameroon

Download or read book Population Status Threats and Conservation of Preuss s Red Colobus Piliocolobus Preussi and Other Diurnal Primates in the Ndokbou Forest Littoral Region Cameroon written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ebo-Makombe-Ndokbou forest block in southwest Cameroon lies within the Gulf of Guinea biodiversity hotspot, characterized by extremely high levels of species richness and endemism, including those of primates. These forests may contain one of the last populations of the Critically Endangered Preuss's red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus preussi; PRC), which is found only in southeastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Gun hunting for bushmeat and habitat loss and degradation from logging and agriculture are the main threats to PRC. The conservation status of PRC and other primates in the Ndokbou forest are largely unknown, with most regional research efforts occurring in the nearby Ebo forest. I assessed the population status of and threats to PRC and other diurnal primates in the Ndokbou forest to inform and improve their protection. I conducted forest reconnaissance surveys to estimate primate abundance and distribution and to assess hunting and logging activities. I also deployed acoustic sensors to assess the spatiotemporal patterns of gun hunting. I compared primate abundance and gun hunting in the Ndokbou forest to those from the protected Korup National Park. Overall primate abundance was less than half of that of Korup NP. Of the nine primate species I encountered in the Ndokbou forest, I heard PRC only once. Cercopithecus nictitans was the most abundant species, accounting for 56% of all primate encounters. Recce surveys suggested that gun hunting activity was widespread with no significant variation in geographic distribution. However, acoustic sensors identified higher levels of gun hunting in areas closest to villages and logging roads, while forest surveys failed to show these differences. Mean gunshot frequency, as measured by the acoustic sensors, was 0.46 gunshots/day in the Ndokbou forest compared to 0.55 gunshots/day in Korup NP. Results suggest that logging activities may have facilitated widespread hunting, which has led to the observed low primate abundance for every species. More evidence for the presence of PRC is needed to confirm its presence in Ndokbou, but if they do occur in the Ndokbou forest they are likely restricted to the most remote and rugged areas of the forest with low gun hunting levels. However, despite impacts from logging and hunting, this forest still contains important endangered primate species. The best hope for their protection likely lies in community-led conservation efforts that address wide-spread hunting levels driven by logging operations.

Book Effective Conservation Science

Download or read book Effective Conservation Science written by Peter M. Kareiva and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel text assembles some of the most intriguing voices in modern conservation biology. Collectively they highlight many of the most challenging questions being asked in conservation science today, each of which will benefit from new experiments, new data, and new analyses. The book's principal aim is to inspire readers to tackle these uncomfortable issues head-on. A second goal is to be reflective and consider how the field has reacted to challenges to orthodoxy, and to what extent have or can these challenges advance conservation science. Furthermore, several chapters discuss how to guard against confirmation bias. The overall goal is that this book will lead to greater conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity by harnessing the engine of constructive scientific scepticism in service of better results.
