Book Records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations and History of the Effort to Organize Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth Maine

Download or read book Records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations and History of the Effort to Organize Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth Maine written by Joshua Campbell Torrance and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis project consisted of two parts. The first part of the project consisted of organizing and then creating an inventory for the Records of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations. These records document the instrumental role of the Hancock County Trustees of Public Reservations in the development of two important State of Maine institutions: Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island and the Woodlawn Museum located in the city of Ellsworth. The second part of the project, dependent upon completion of the first part, was to write a history of the early efforts to organize Woodlawn Museum, which was opened to the public as a historic house museum in 1929. It is one of the premier historic estates in the State of Maine and one of the most historically significant estates in New England. The house furnishings are original and present one of New England's most comprehensive family collections still intact. The estate still contains its original 180-acres and many of its original outbuildings. Woodlawn is also the repository for the extensive Black family archives documenting the importance of Colonel Black and his family in the economic, political, and cultural development of Maine. For seventy-five years, Woodlawn has been preserved and cared for by a remarkable group of people, mainly volunteers, spearheaded by Mr. Richard W. Hale. Understanding the formation of Woodlawn as a historic house museum, and in particular the role of Mr. Hale, offers important examples for the board and staff to learn from and thus make more informed decisions on the planned expansion of the Museum. Furthermore, as a part of the history of historic house museum management, it is an important case study for museum studies scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Vanguard: Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, 1950–1969 traces the first two decades of the Haystack Mountain School of Craft’s history and its pivotal impact on the world of art and craft practice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. The first scholarly investigation of this internationally renowned school, the exhibition, and the accompanying catalogue will feature work made at Haystack or influenced by time spent there by some of the most highly recognized names in the fields of fiber, glass, ceramics, jewelry, and graphic arts to demonstrate the school’s significant role in debates about art, craft, industry, and pedagogy in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Haystack’s model of brief summer sessions and changing instructors offered new ways of thinking about the status of craft as art and the nature of accessible design in the context of communally based, process-oriented learning. Anni Albers, Toshiko Takaezu, Jack Lenor Larsen, Kay Sekimachi, Arline Fisch, Robert Arneson, Harvey Littleton, Wolf Kahn, and Dale Chihuly are just a few of the artists who taught at the school between 1950 and 1969 and who helped define Haystack’s radically open-ended approach towards art and craft. With approximately eighty objects assembled from public and private collections and archives, many rarely or never before exhibited in a museum, In the Vanguard will establish the substantial legacy of this remote community of makers in the art and education world at large. Archival material installed throughout the exhibition will include original correspondence, photographs, brochures, architectural models, posters, and early ephemera. Published in association with the Portland Museum of Art. Exhibition dates: Portland Museum of Art, Maine: May 24–September 8, 2019 Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan: November 15, 2019–March 8, 2020

Book The Diaries V 6 Jan 1790 Dec 1799

Download or read book The Diaries V 6 Jan 1790 Dec 1799 written by George Washington and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington was rarely isolated from the world during his eventful life. His diary for 1751-52 relates a voyage to Barbados when he was nineteen. The next two accounts concern the early phases of the French and Indian War, in which Washington commanded a Virginia regiment. By the 1760s when Washington's diaries resume, he considered himself retired from public life, but George III was on the British throne and in the American colonies the process of unrest was beginning that would ultimately place Washington in command of a revolutionary army. Even as he traveled to Philadelphia in 1787 to chair the Constitutional Convention, however, and later as president, Washington's first love remained his plantation, Mount Vernon. In his diary, he religiously recorded the changing methods of farming he employed there and the pleasures of riding and hunting. Rich in material from this private sphere, The Diaries of George Washington offer historians and anyone interested in Washington a closer view of the first president in this bicentennial year of his death.
