Barlow, at the May session, A.D. 1870: From our efficient Grand Secretary I learn that the proceedings of the Grand Chapter from its organization up to 1855, have never been printed, and are only recorded in manuscript in the office of the Grand Secretary. We are one of the oldest Grand Chapters in the United States, and it is important that its early records should be carefully preserved. The situation in which these are now, not only renders them inaccessible to a large portion of the Royal Craft, but are liable to be lost or destroyed by accident. I recommend that the Grand Secretary be instructed to have a sufficient number printed for the present and future wants of the Grand Chapter. Those early records, with a short historical sketch of some of its oldest Chapters, would make a volume that I think would be much sought for and should be in the possession of every Chapter in this jurisdiction. I trust this subject will receive that attention at your hands which its importance demands. I think a committee has been appointed for this purpose, and for collecting such materials as might be available for a historical sketch of Royal Arch Masonry in this State. How far this committee have progressed in this work, I know not. This much is certain; the work cannot be accomplished with the present state of the treasury. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Records of Freemasonry in the State of Connecticut In order to show the paternity of some of the first Masonic Lodges established in Connecticut, and in other States, we shall make a few short extracts from the "Proceedings in Masonry, from its First Origin in New England," which we find in a volume belonging to our Grand Lodge Library, entitled "The Constitutions of the Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons, containing their History, Charges, Addresses, &c., collected and digested from their Old Records, Faithful Traditions, and Lodge Books, for the use of Masons; to which is added a History of the Grand Lodges in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," &c. From 1733 to 1755, two Grand Lodges existed in Massachusetts, one derived from England, the other from Scotland. This ancient book was compiled and arranged, after the union of these two Grand Lodges, by a Committee appointed for that purpose, of which Doct. John Warren was the Chairman. It was published, under the sanction of the Grand Master and Grand Wardens, in the year 1792, by Brother Isaiah Thomas, of Worcester. It has ever been looked upon as a truthful exponent of the principles, designs and teachings of our venerable Order, as well as a faithful record of its early history in England, Scotland, Ireland and America. This volume was dedicated to our "Illustrious Brother George Washington, the Friend of Masonry, of his Country, and of Man." The brief extracts which we take, allude chiefly to the granting of charters for Connecticut; although it cannot be considered as a digression from our subject, or as entirely foreign to our original purpose, to notice the introduction of Masonry in other parts of our country.
