This disposition of his property would show that he left no natural heirs, and presumably he never married. He died November 1700, and the Court Record at New London shows settlement of the estate Dec. 17, 1700. No. 4. Of Mark Meigs, born 1614, third son of Vincent No. I). There is little to record. He appears to have identified himself closely with the interests of the family until some time after their removal to New Haven. His name does not appear 011 Conn. Records after 1647. It was probably about that time that he went to Long Island, as he was granted a lot in Easthampton, but abandoned it before 1651. From that date to 1658 he resided in Southampton, and probably married his wife, Avis, there, removing about 1658 to Huntington, farther West on the Island, where he is recorded in 167 2, and his will probated there in 1673, leaves all of his property after the death of his wife to Samuel Lum. Until that time my interest in such matters ha'd beer'i' but slight; but remembering that I had in my boyhood secured a staten'ient from my grandfather, which I still preserved, I sent a copy of it to Mr. Ketchum, saying to him that I would write to the other relatives for such additions as they could make to the record. This led to a considerable correspond ence with him, as I secured records from a number of relatives, and at my suggestion, but with his approval, I interviewed the various families of the name in New York City, Brooklyn, Newark and the vicinity. In the course of a few months Mr. Ketchum called upon me in New York, and stated that I was collecting the statistics faster than he could get them from any other source, and in View of his failing health and much needed rest from his literary labors, he suggested that I should continue the work, he transferring to me such papers as had already come into his possession. In the book Descendants of John Dwight, of Dedham, Mass, it is stated, in a foot note, that Richard Everett and wife, Mary, came in the same ship with the original John Dwight, but no authority is given. The same book says that John Dwight came in 1634 - 5 from Dedham, England. Tradition says that Richard Everett first settled in Watertown, Mass, but no record has been found showing this to be a fact; neither is there any record of his marriage to his first wife, Mary, or of the birth of his first two children, John and Israel.
