Book Connections and Complexity

Download or read book Connections and Complexity written by Shinu Anna Abraham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of original research articles highlight the important cross-regional, cross-chronological, and comparative approaches to political and economic landscapes in ancient South Asia and its neighbors. Focusing on the Indus Valley period and Iron Age India, this volume incorporates new research in South Asia within the broader universe of archaeological scholarship. Contributions focus on four major themes: reinterpreting material culture; identifying domains and regional boundaries; articulating complexity; and modeling interregional interaction. These studies develop theoretical models that may be applicable researchers studying cultural complexity elsewhere in the world.

Book Changing Forms and Cultural Identity

Download or read book Changing Forms and Cultural Identity written by European Association of South Asian Archaeologists. International Conference and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These contributions represent the most innovative trends in the contemporary study of Art and Archaeology of South Asia. Based on ongoing field research, each study identifies a single distinctive visual theme in order to illuminate the regional culture in interplay with a broader pan-Indian cultural heritage. Contemporary South Asian studies exploit a wide variety of methodological tools, which permit the exploration of more diverse questions. Philological, archaeological, art historical and anthropological evidence contextualize cultural artefacts in many media from terracotta figures to monumental architectural complexes. The artefacts date from the beginning of the historical up to the modern period and derive from across the Indic cultural zone from Central Asia and the Himalayas to the Subcontinent as far as South India and Bangladesh. Thus, one can appreciate the stunning diversity of regional, thematic, iconographic, and aesthetic expressions within the vast panorama of South Asian visual culture. Senior scholars from more than a dozen countries of Europe and Asia bring a sophisticated understanding of the broader issues against which their thematic studies must be considered. Each article is extensively illustrated, many images deriving from the scholars' own fieldwork, and each study concludes with a short but authoritative bibliography providing avenues for future research.

Book The Archaeology of South Asia

Download or read book The Archaeology of South Asia written by Robin Coningham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical synthesis of the archaeology of South Asia from the Neolithic period (c.6500 BCE), when domestication began, to the spread of Buddhism accompanying the Mauryan Emperor Asoka's reign (third century BCE). The authors examine the growth and character of the Indus civilisation, with its town planning, sophisticated drainage systems, vast cities and international trade. They also consider the strong cultural links between the Indus civilisation and the second, later period of South Asian urbanism which began in the first millennium BCE and developed through the early first millennium CE. In addition to examining the evidence for emerging urban complexity, this book gives equal weight to interactions between rural and urban communities across South Asia and considers the critical roles played by rural areas in social and economic development. The authors explore how narratives of continuity and transformation have been formulated in analyses of South Asia's Prehistoric and Early Historic archaeological record.

Book Contextualizing Material Culture in South and Central Asia in Pre modern Times

Download or read book Contextualizing Material Culture in South and Central Asia in Pre modern Times written by European Association of South Asian Archaeologists. International Conference and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reveals contemporary views on material culture in South and Central Asia from pre-historic times up to early modern age. Megaliths, seals, pottery, beads, coins, stone and copper inscriptions, sanctuaries, architectural remains and graveyards are physical evidences of important ancient cultures, such as the Indus Civilization or the Gupta dynasty, and are presented in this volume from different (inter)disciplinary perspectives and beyond political borders. More than thirty papers written by experts from the field offer a wide chronological and geographical panorama as well as new interpretations of the archaeological finds and artefacts. The scope and variety of the content show the innovations in approach, method, technique and technology, collaboration and cross-linking of the disciplines of archaeology, art and architectural history, anthropology, philology and epigraphy. The topics, based on original scholarly research, fieldwork and archaeological excavations, provide thorough studies of the visual material in order to illuminate the human past and the cultural entanglements in South Asian pre-modern history. The articles are richly illustrated with maps, tables and photographs from the scholars' own research trips to South, Central and North India as well as Pakistan and South Tajikistan.

Book Quaternary Geoarchaeology of India

Download or read book Quaternary Geoarchaeology of India written by N. Tiwari and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2023-03-29 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quaternary Period in South Asia has a very prolonged and diverse history. Within this region, India represents various technological and cultural phases of hominin occupation adapting to different ecological zones throughout the Quaternary Period. The earliest records of this occupation can be traced back to 1.5 Ma ago and possibly to c. 2 Ma ago. Archaeological evidence has been reported from all known phases in India, showing a continuous record of occupation from the Early Pleistocene onwards and reflecting adaptation by multiple hominin species over time. This book aims to highlight recent advances in the Quaternary geoarchaeology by showcasing diverse methods such as archaeology, geology, palaeoclimatology, sedimentology, GIS, remote sensing and taphonomy. It presents a collection of papers that address various geoarchaeological aspects from different regions in India, within the time frame of the Early Pleistocene to Anthropocene. This volume provides an opportunity for new data to be disseminated, particularly by young researchers and, within the framework of worldwide research issues, it promotes new geoarchaeological perspectives from India.
