Book Handbook on climate information for farming communities What farmers need and what is available

Download or read book Handbook on climate information for farming communities What farmers need and what is available written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The content of this guide is twofold: to describe the most important weather and agroclimatic products that are available by the National Meteorological Service (NMS) and to identify the most important needs of farmers concerning climate information. Special consideration will be given to the local knowledge used by rural farmers, too often neglected, but a key factor to their ability to cope with climate variability and change. An additional objective of this guide is to improve communication among the NMS staff, in particular, meteorologists and agrometeorologists and to encourage Agro-Pastoral Field School (APFS) trainers and facilitators to be more aware of their respective availability. Furthermore, one of the most important aims is the exchange of agroclimatic information that corresponds to the needs of all concerned, thus facilitating the assessment of the existing climatic risks in farming activities. The integration of the Response Farming in Rainfed Agriculture (RF) approach into Farmer Field School (FFS) is feasibly an effective way to reconcile NMS products with the needs of farmers. RF is a method used for identifying and quantifying rainfall variability at a local level to assess the climatic risks of farming communities. The Climate-Responsive Farming Management (CRFM) approach is an enhanced version of RF that uses modern and digital technologies, such as specific computer software, automatic weather stations, real-time telecommunication and smartphone applications. This approach can be implemented at a minimum cost at the farming level. The integration of the Response Farming in Rainfed Agriculture (RF) approach into FFS is feasibly an effective way to reconcile NMS products with the needs of farmers. Book Threats Risks and Sustainability Answers by Space

Download or read book Threats Risks and Sustainability Answers by Space written by Kai-Uwe Schrogl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development is challenged by, at least until 2050, a strong population, more severe environmental strains, growing mobility, and dwindling energy resources. All these factors will lead to serious consequences for humankind. Inadequate agricultural resources, water supply and non renewable energy sources, epidemics, climate change, and natural disasters will further heavily impact human life. The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) sheds a new light on threats, risks and sustainability by combining approaches from various disciplines. It analyzes what could be the contribution of space tools to predict, manage and mitigate those threats. It aims at demonstrating that space is not a niche but has become an overarching tool in solving today’s problems.

Book National agrometeorological services and pest and disease early warning in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book National agrometeorological services and pest and disease early warning in Asia and the Pacific written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To minimize the impact of adverse weather on crops and to make use of crop-weather relationships to boost agricultural production, the agriculture sector needs tailored weather and climate data and information products that can be directly applied to try to improve and protect the livelihood of farmers in agricultural production, which is called either “agrometeorological services” or “climate services for agriculture”. Agrometeorological services can be defined as a decision aide service, derived from climate information, that assists agricultural stakeholders to make improved ex-ante decision-making. As climate change accompanies increased extreme weather and climate conditions, agromet services are getting more attention in the agriculture sector these days. In view of this urgency and importance of agromet services in the region, FAO has started the “Asia-Pacific Regional Programme on agrometeorological services, pest and disease alerts and early warning systems for farmers” in Bhutan, Cambodia, Nepal, and Samoa from Aug 2019 to Dec 2020 with an aim to improve the national capacity to produce the agromet and pest and disease early warning services. This report is written based on our project implementation experiences and findings in four countries, and presentations and discussions at the Regional Agromet Workshop held in Dec 2020, where participants had identified information and data available, challenges and barriers faced, and lessons learned. This report also provides the way forward suggestions for improving the existing agromet services to national level operational services, not only in four countries but also in other countries with similar agromet service capacity in the region.

Book Remote Sensing Land Surface Changes

Download or read book Remote Sensing Land Surface Changes written by Felix Kogan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the detrimental consequences of climate-related land changes over a 40-year period between 1981 and 2020, and focuses on how climate warming is deteriorating the agricultural system due to excessive heat, lack of moisture and more intensive and widespread droughts leading to a reduction of agricultural production. Most of the existing literature on the unfavourable consequences of global warming for land are based on a relatively short period of weather station data, covering local land areas with limited networks and monitoring parameters. These concerns have led to the use of satellite data, whose measurements are controlled by such vegetation characteristics as chlorophyll, carotenoids, moisture contents in the plants and temperature inside the vegetation community. Therefore, the discussion of this book is completely based on high-resolution global land surface measurements by the sensors on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) operational afternoon polar-orbiting satellites. The book also focuses on understanding climate change impacts on land changes where humans are living, and combines biophysically-grounded methods and the 40-year data to develop models for monitoring large-scale Earth warming impacts on land and for timely prediction of climate consequences for humans. These 40-year trends in land characteristics will help to better inform the assessment of potential changes in the future and how to reach human sustainability. The book will of interest to scientists using satellite remote sensing to track climate change impacts on land over time, as well as students and researchers in climatology and environmental sustainability.

Book Strategies Toward Sustainable Development

Download or read book Strategies Toward Sustainable Development written by Nicholas A. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unparalleled resource sets forth the international community's blueprint for worldwide development. Here is one reference source for all of the action plans negotiated since the United Nations' historic "Earth Summit" in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro that established the global and regional priorities necessary to sustain environmentally sound economic and social development. Expert commentary and annotations on the implications - both opportunities for investment and concerns about changes in regulatory regimes - of these international legal policy decisions is featured here. This is the only resource integrating implementation strategies with the Agenda 21 directives, complete with analytical commentary and annotations. This comprehensive work provides expert guidance to the legal instruments framing the strategic objectives for sustainable development. It includes full coverage of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, adopted at the UN World Summit for Sustainable Development (2002), which set the priorities for implementing Agenda 21, the action plan that was adopted at the U.N. Summit for Environment and Development a decade earlier. Here also are the strategic measures for financing these strategic objectives, negotiated at the summit meeting in Monterrey, Mexico. Taken together, these legal instruments comprise the current international action plan that guides the multilateral, bilateral, and national economic development agendas around the world. This invaluable reference is essential for those involved in international trade law, since free trade agreements now contain provisions that mandate negotiations to harmonize environmental and social regulations. Similarly, these agreed policies guide the international programs of the World Bank, regional development banks, and regional integration pacts such as the European Union or the Association of South East Asian Nations. Coverage includes: - Evolving Delivery Mechanisms for a Clear & Urgent Mission (Commentary by Nicholas A. Robinson) - Agenda 21 - Annotated Action Plan - Johannesburg Plan of Implementation - Monterrey Financing Plan - Policy Resolutions and Implementing Measures - Valuable references to Internet sources for national reports submitted to the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development.

Book Guidelines on the use of available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve agricultural crop production forecast statistics in sub saharan African countries

Download or read book Guidelines on the use of available remote sensing tools products methodologies and data to improve agricultural crop production forecast statistics in sub saharan African countries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through in-depth understanding of agricultural production systems in Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe, this document is intended to provide guidelines on how to make use of the existing remote sensing products, methodologies and data to improve crop production forecast statistics in developing countries in general, and SSA, in particular. Despite the importance of crop production and the associated challenges most countries in SSA lack reliable and timely agricultural production forecasting systems to support decision-making at national to house-hold levels. Thus, these guidelines have been developed to facilitate the use of freely available remote sensing data and derived agro-climatic monitoring indicators and early warning products to improve crop production forecast in SSA, based on our recent experiences in Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe. The recent experiences accrued from working closely with the local national agricultural and meteorological centres have helped in identifying pragmatic approaches to support effective and efficiently modalities in crop production assessments and forecasting with adequate lead-time to support decision/policy making at sub-national, national and regional levels.
