Book Rebel and Statesman The Early Years

Download or read book Rebel and Statesman The Early Years written by Joesph Schechtman and published by Eshel Books. This book was released on 2022-05-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First time in Paperback. This two-volume work by Joseph B. Schectman, constitutes the definitive biography of Vladimir (Ze'ev) Jabotinsky. Many historians call Jabotinsky a great Jewish patriot and statesman, but to others he was an opportunist. A man whose memory commands both reverent loyalty and fierce hatred at the same time, he is most certainly one of the giants of modem Jewish history, and one whose life story reads like a history of the creation of the State of Israel. Jabotinsky comes alive in this biography as a political thinker and leader, poet, orator, diplomat, linguist, and freedom fighter for whom the liberation of Palestine became a consuming passion. Volume One, Rebel and Statesman, delves into his background as a journalist in Russia, creator of the Jewish Legion that fought with the British in World War I, soldier who fought in the liberation of Palestine from the Turks, and organizer of the defense of Jerusalem against Arab pogroms-to show the development of character that would drive him to become a political prisoner of the British, member of the Zionist World Executive, and eventually founder of the Jewish military underground. This volume closes with his resignation in 1923 from the World Zionist Organization in protest against the views of its leaders-a time of deep disillusionment for him, and a turning point in both his career and his life.

Among other themes, the book examines why and how some rebels establish both structures and practices of rule, the role of ideology, cultural, and material factors affecting rebel governance strategies, the impact of governance on the rebel/civilian relationship, civilian responses to rebel rule, the comparison between modes of state and non-state governance to rebel attempts to establish political order, the political economy of rebel governance, and the decline and demise of rebel governance attempts.

Download or read book Studies in Contemporary Jewry written by Ezra Mendelsohn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Strategies: Jewish Texts and Contexts collects essays on Jewish literature which deal with "the manifold ways that literary texts reveal their authors' attitudes toward their own Jewish identity and toward diverse aspects of the 'Jewish question.'" Essays in this volume explore the tension between Israeli and Diaspora identities, and between those who write in Hebrew or Yiddish and those who write in other "non-Jewish" languages. The essays also explore the question of how Jewish writers remember history in their "search for a useable past." From essays on Jabotinsky's virtually unknown plays to Philip Roth's novels, this book provides a strong overview of contemporary themes in Jewish literary studies.
