While the international legal framework for recognition is largely in place, there is still much to be done to improve the framework's implementation. The authors analyse the national action plans, demonstrating that there is great variety in practice among European countries. While some national action plans, provide a clear agenda for further improvement, others merely describe the current state of affairs, offering little indication for further action. This book will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners, and it is hoped that the analysis it provides will encourage further discussion and, above all, improved practice.

Book excerpt: Realising Europe's potential: progress and challenges examines the participation of women directors on the boards of the STOXX 600 companies between 2011 and 2015. The study also looks at other related topics such as the inclusion of women directors and board committees and the promotion of women into board leadership position. This study also identifies trends occurring at company, country, sector levels concerning board gender diversity which is driven mainly by the addition of independent, non-executive female directors. Women on European boards are on average younger, newer to the board, a higher number of outside directorships listed companies, and are more likely to be independent outsiders that their male counterparts. The topics covered in the study include proportion of women on Boards of Directors, proportion of women on Board Committee additional gender -related board statistics representation of women in leadership positions remuneration regulatory framework examination of company disclosures and league tables. Book excerpt: This report by the European Union Committee examines the progress of the European Union in initiating a strategy for jobs and growth across the Community as a whole. The background to this report stems from the Spring European Council meeting in 2000, in Lisbon, and the launch of an economic reform agenda. The Committee observes that since the "Lisbon Agenda", little progress has been made and the performance of many of the larger European economies has been poor. The Committee has noted that certain worrying signs of protectionist behaviour have developed, especially regarding barriers of cross border mergers. The EU has recognized this weak performance and the Agenda was relaunched in 2005, with a greater focus on the key economic priorities of more growth and jobs. Also, all Member States are now required to produce an annual National Action Plan highlighting the policies being pursued to improve economic growth and increase employment. The Committee sets out a number of recommendations to further push forward the priorities of growth and jobs, including: that the Commission should seek to complete the progress towards an internal market; that Member States should influence one another in the development of good practice through statistical comparison of their economic progress, and agree on quantifiable targets; that the format of the National Action Plans should include not only the successes, but where countries are underperforming; that the Agenda be given a higher public profile.
