Book Remote Sensing Applications for Agriculture and Crop Modelling

Download or read book Remote Sensing Applications for Agriculture and Crop Modelling written by Piero Toscano and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop models and remote sensing techniques have been combined and applied in agriculture and crop estimation on local and regional scales, or worldwide, based on the simultaneous development of crop models and remote sensing. The literature shows that many new remote sensing sensors and valuable methods have been developed for the retrieval of canopy state variables and soil properties from remote sensing data for assimilating the retrieved variables into crop models. At the same time, remote sensing has been used in a staggering number of applications for agriculture. This book sets the context for remote sensing and modelling for agricultural systems as a mean to minimize the environmental impact, while increasing production and productivity. The eighteen papers published in this Special Issue, although not representative of all the work carried out in the field of Remote Sensing for agriculture and crop modeling, provide insight into the diversity and the complexity of developments of RS applications in agriculture. Five thematic focuses have emerged from the published papers: yield estimation, land cover mapping, soil nutrient balance, time-specific management zone delineation and the use of UAV as agricultural aerial sprayers. All contributions exploited the use of remote sensing data from different platforms (UAV, Sentinel, Landsat, QuickBird, CBERS, MODIS, WorldView), their assimilation into crop models (DSSAT, AQUACROP, EPIC, DELPHI) or on the synergy of Remote Sensing and modeling, applied to cardamom, wheat, tomato, sorghum, rice, sugarcane and olive. The intended audience is researchers and postgraduate students, as well as those outside academia in policy and practice.

Book GIS and Remote Sensing Applications in Biogeography and Ecology

Download or read book GIS and Remote Sensing Applications in Biogeography and Ecology written by Andrew C. Millington and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the conservation of tropical forests has received worldwide publicity whereas effective forest management, particularly for timber extraction, has attracted little attention and gained some notoriety. The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill defined role (Swaine 1996).

Book Object Based Image Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Blaschke
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-08-09
  • ISBN : 3540770585
  • Pages : 804 pages

Download or read book Object Based Image Analysis written by Thomas Blaschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-09 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of invited interdisciplinary persp- tives on the recent topic of Object-based Image Analysis (OBIA). Its c- st tent is based on select papers from the 1 OBIA International Conference held in Salzburg in July 2006, and is enriched by several invited chapters. All submissions have passed through a blind peer-review process resulting in what we believe is a timely volume of the highest scientific, theoretical and technical standards. The concept of OBIA first gained widespread interest within the GIScience (Geographic Information Science) community circa 2000, with the advent of the first commercial software for what was then termed ‘obje- oriented image analysis’. However, it is widely agreed that OBIA builds on older segmentation, edge-detection and classification concepts that have been used in remote sensing image analysis for several decades. Nevert- less, its emergence has provided a new critical bridge to spatial concepts applied in multiscale landscape analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the synergy between image-objects and their radiometric char- teristics and analyses in Earth Observation data (EO).

Book Learning Landscape Ecology

Download or read book Learning Landscape Ecology written by Sarah E. Gergel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title meets a great demand for training in spatial analysis tools accessible to a wide audience. Landscape ecology continues to grow as an exciting discipline with much to offer for solving pressing and emerging problems in environmental science. Much of the strength of landscape ecology lies in its ability to address challenges over large areas, over spatial and temporal scales at which decision-making often occurs. As the world tackles issues related to sustainability and global change, the need for this broad perspective has only increased. Furthermore, spatial data and spatial analysis (core methods in landscape ecology) are critical for analyzing land-cover changes world-wide. While spatial dynamics have long been fundamental to terrestrial conservation strategies, land management and reserve design, mapping and spatial themes are increasingly recognized as important for ecosystem management in aquatic, coastal and marine systems. This second edition is purposefully more applied and international in its examples, approaches, perspectives and contributors. It includes new advances in quantifying landscape structure and connectivity (such as graph theory), as well as labs that incorporate the latest scientific understanding of ecosystem services, resilience, social-ecological landscapes, and even seascapes. Of course, as before, the exercises emphasize easy-to-use, widely available software. http://sarahgergel.net/lel/learning-landscape-ecology/

Download or read book Geography of Rajasthan written by T.S. Chouhan and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rajasthan is a land of extremes and the present book indicates the great variety in relief, climate, soil, vegetation, agricultural activity and mineral deposits. Rajasthan is endowed with diversified natural resources. The survival of mankind has always been supported by nature and its resources for centuries man has been exploiting these resources for his survival and development. In the rapid march of progress, the balance that needs to be maintained between exploitation and regeneration was however largely ignored. With the increase in population there has thus been great pressure on these resources leading to their scarcity and degradation. Proper Planning for management of growth is possible only when relevant information of resource, population, availability of social and industrial infrastructure and the trends in growth are known. The aim of the books is comprehension and understanding through functional co-relation Detailed in information is furnished for the purpose of illustrating a point and general functional relationship. The Subject has been treated in its regional aspects and an attempt has been made to preserve a balance between the physical, human and economic aspects in this book. In a book dealing with a state such as Rajasthan where agriculture, animal husbandry and mining industry are of a paramount importance, it is natural that much space has been devoted to these aspects of economic geography. This book provides updated information regarding land, people available resources and infrastructural facilities mainly through maps, graphs, charts and tables. I hope the book will be very useful for planner s researchers, teachers, Students, NGO and all those interested in developmental activities.
