Book Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Raymond MacDonald Alden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century This volume appears in continuation of the plan which was initiated with a collection of Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century, and with a single exception is made in accordance with the same principles: that is, it undertakes to give a sufficient body of prose readings for the use of those engaged in the general study of English literature in the period in question. In the nineteenth century, however, the mass of material is so great that it has seemed best to abandon the effort to represent the minor prose writers, of interest less for intrinsic worth than for their relation to particular ideas and movements, and to confine the volume to those of major importance in pure literature, exclusive of fiction. While many of the names thus omitted (such as Southey and Leigh Hunt, for example, in the earlier period, and Borrow and Leslie Stephen in the later) are tantalizingly attractive, yet the thirteen chosen writers stand out so clearly from among their contemporaries that it happens that not a single additional name was recommended for admission by those critics who were kind enough to look over the editor's list. Besides these space has been found - rather illogically, but on what appear to be imperative grounds of utility - for some representation of the great reviews of the early nineteenth century; for to study the age of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats without some acquaintance with the reviewers is out of the question, and their work is usually more inaccessible than anything else in this volume. Complete compositions, other things being equal, have of course been preferred - or sections, chapters, and the like, having the same independent character. Where omissions have been made they are indicated scrupulously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 1 The form of the text has been generally normalized to mod ern usage, in respect to spelling, punctuation, and the like, except where individual practice is of real significance as in the capitalization of some of the writings of Carlyle. As in the earlier volume, the editor's notes are restricted to two classes: facts which the reader should have in mind in begin ning a selection, and interpretations necessary to the fairly rapid reading of the text. Download or read book Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Raymond MacDonald Alden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 [Published in Fraser's Magazine for May; a review of Croker's edition of the Life, and incidentally a reply to Macaulay's account of Boswell in his review of the same work.] ... Boswell has already been much commented upon; but rather in the way of censure and vituperation than of true recognition. He was a man that brought himself much before the world; confessed that he eagerly coveted fame, or if that were not possible, notoriety; of which latter as he gained far more than seemed his due, the public were incited, not only by their natural love of scandal, but by a special ground of envy, to say whatever ill of him could be said. Out of the fifteen millions that then lived, and had bed and board, in the British islands, this man has provided us a greater pleasure than any other individual, at whose cost we now enjoy ourselves; perhaps has done us a greater service than can be specially attributed to more than two or three: yet, ungrateful that we are, no written or spoken eulogy of James Boswell anywhere exists; his recompense in solid pudding (so far as copyright went) was not excessive; and as for the empty praise, it has altogether been denied him. Men are unwiser than children; they do not know the hand that feeds them. Boswell was a person whose mean or bad qualities lay open to the general eye; visible, palpable to the dullest. His good qualities, again, belonged not to the time he lived in; were far from common then; indeed, in such a degree, were almost unexampled; not recognizable therefore by every one; nay, apt even (so strange had they grown) to be confounded with the very vices they lay contiguous to and had sprung out of. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century The principles governing the choice of selections may be briefly explained. In the first place, it was thought well to re present the half-dozen (more or less) most important prose writers of the century by fairly generous and complete speci mens of their work, approximating some twenty to thirty thou sand words each. These selections cover, in the experience of the editor, the assignments of prescribed reading set for one or two weeks, in college courses dealing with the century as a whole. The authors thus largely represented are Defoe, Swift, Steele, Addison, Johnson, Boswell, and Burke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Readings of the Medieval Orient

Download or read book Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Readings of the Medieval Orient written by Liliana Sikorska and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel narratives and historical works shaped the perception of Muslims and the East in the Victorian and post-Victorian periods. Analyzing the discourses on Muslims which originated in the European Middle Ages, the first part of the book discusses the troubled legacy of the encounters between the East and the West and locates the nineteenth-century texts concerning the Saracens and their lands in the liminal space between history and fiction. Drawing on the nineteenth-century models, the second part of the book looks at fictional and non-fictional works of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century which re-established the "Oriental obsession," stimulating dread and resentment, and even more strongly setting the Civilized West against the Barbaric East. Here medieval metaphorical enemies of Mankind – the World, the Flesh and the Devil – reappear in different contexts: the world of immigration, of white women desiring Muslim men, and the present-day "freedom fighters."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric 1& 2, 1928: Manual and Calendar This pamphlet contains essential information and directions concerning the course. Students are expected at the beginning of the course to make themselves thoroughly familiar with all items in the manual - preceding the calendar - and will be responsible for the observance of all directions and regulations there given. Assignments in the Calendar will apply as printed except when altered by the instructor. When no assignment is given in class, the printed assignment will apply. Purpose of the Course This course is intended for students who already possess the ability to write and speak with elementary correctness and clearness. Work which occasionally relapses into bad errors of spelling, punctuation, or grammar, is either not passed at all or heavily penalized; and students who at the outset manifestly lack the ability to conform to the minimum standard are relegated to Rhetoric Zero. The aims of the course are: I. To develop the power and habit of effective speaking and writing, - especially for those purposes, practical and cultural, which university men and women, before and after graduation, will find more important in the work and play of life. II. To develop, as a necessary means to I, a love and understanding of good literature. Text Books Manual and Calendar of Rhetoric 1-2. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chaos and Cosmos, Heidi Scott integrates literary readings with contemporary ecological methods to investigate two essential and contrasting paradigms of nature that scientific ecology continues to debate: chaos and balance. Ecological literature of the Romantic and Victorian eras uses environmental chaos and the figure of the balanced microcosm as tropes essential to understanding natural patterns, and these eras were the first to reflect upon the ecological degradations of the Industrial Revolution. Chaos and Cosmos contends that the seed of imagination that would enable a scientist to study a lake as a microcosmic world at the formal, empirical level was sown by Romantic and Victorian poets who consciously drew a sphere around their perceptions in order to make sense of spots of time and place amid the globalizing modern world. This study’s interest goes beyond likening literary tropes to scientific aesthetics; it aims to theorize the interdisciplinary history of the concepts that underlie our scientific understanding of modern nature. Paradigmatic ecological ideas such as ecosystems, succession dynamics, punctuated equilibrium, and climate change are shown to have a literary foundation that preceded their status as theories in science. This book represents an elevation of the prospects of ecocriticism toward fully developed interdisciplinary potentials of literary ecology.

Book Victorian Publishing

Download or read book Victorian Publishing written by Alexis Weedon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on research into the book-production records of twelve publishers-including George Bell & Son, Richard Bentley, William Blackwood, Chatto & Windus, Oliver & Boyd, Macmillan, and the book printers William Clowes and T&A Constable - taken at ten-year intervals from 1836 to 1916, this book interprets broad trends in the growth and diversity of book publishing in Victorian Britain. Chapters explore the significance of the export trade to the colonies and the rising importance of towns outside London as centres of publishing; the influence of technological change in increasing the variety and quantity of books; and how the business practice of literary publishing developed to expand the market for British and American authors. The book takes examples from the purchase and sale of popular fiction by Ouida, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Ewing, and canonical authors such as George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, and Mark Twain. Consideration of the unique demands of the educational market complements the focus on fiction, as readers, arithmetic books, music, geography, science textbooks, and Greek and Latin classics became a staple for an increasing number of publishing houses wishing to spread the risk of novel publication.
