Book Re evaluation of the Certified Isotope Amount Ratio of IRMM 016 and Re certification of the Isotope Amount Ratio IRMM 015

Download or read book Re evaluation of the Certified Isotope Amount Ratio of IRMM 016 and Re certification of the Isotope Amount Ratio IRMM 015 written by S. Duta and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the re-certification work of the isotope amount ratio of the istotopic reference material IRMM-015 based on the new synthetic mixtures of highly enriched lithium isotopes. The recertification work should be done due to the fact that the previous certified value of isotope amount ratio of this material was based on the old lithium isotopes mixtures. Since the certification of IRMM-016 the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (ISO GUM, 1995) was published. Applied the GUM guidelines for uncertainty evaluation, more accurate uncertainty on IRMM-016 was obtained. This value was taken into account in the re-certification of IRMM-015. IRMM-016 is now almost depleted and a new batch (200 vials) was produced labeled IRMM-015a.

Book Preparation and Certification of IRMM 3636 IRMM 3636a and IRMM 3636b

Download or read book Preparation and Certification of IRMM 3636 IRMM 3636a and IRMM 3636b written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isotope reference materials IRMM-3636 was prepared by gravimetrically mixing of solutions from highly enriched 99.96% 233U (IRMM-3630) and highly enriched 99.97% 236U (IRMM-3660) in order to obtain an isotopic ratio n(233U)/n(236U) close to unity. IRMM-3636a and IRMM-3636b were prepared from IRMM-3636 by gravimetrical dilution. The primary solution, IRMM-3636 is for the time being not yet available for external users. The certified isotope content values for IRMM-3636a of 4.27988(54)Å"0-7 mol U per g of solution and for IRMM-3636b of 2.21802(61)Å"0-8 mol U per g of solution and the certified isotope amount ratios have been established by mass metrology, subsequently the primary solution IRMM-3636 was verified by isotope mass spectrometry. The methodology used in the preparation and certification was similar to that of comparable uranium mixtures made in the past. The uncertainties contributing to the final uncertainties of the isotopic ratios are the weighing errors, the measured impurities in each starting material, the stoichiometry of the oxides and the isotopic abundances of each of the starting materials. The method for the preparation and mixing is described and the certification and verification procedures are reported. Verification of IRMM-3636 was performed by TRITON TIMS measurements using Faraday collectors and secondary electron multiplier in combination with an RPQ energy filter for improved abundance sensitivity. The results agreed well with the certified values obtained from the mixing calculations. By mixing the n(233U)/n(236U) double spike with a sample and applying internal mass fractionation correction, the n(235U)/n(238U) ratio of a given sample can be determined with the highest possible accuracy. The Isotopic Reference Materials IRMM-3636a and IRMM-3636b are part of a systematic IRMM programme to supply Isotopic Reference Materials of various isotopes at different concentrations The Isotopic Reference Material is supplied in a sealed quartz ampoule containing 1 mL of a 1 M nitric acid solution

Book Re certification of the IRMM 183 187 Series of Uranium Nitrate Solution Reference Materials

Download or read book Re certification of the IRMM 183 187 Series of Uranium Nitrate Solution Reference Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the re-certification of the IRMM-183-187 series of uranium nitrate solution reference materials with isotope amount fractions n(235U)/n(U) ranging from 0.3 % - 4.5 %, certified for the uranium isotopic composition. The certified values and their uncertainties were assigned following ISO 17034 [1], ISO Guide 35 [2] and the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement [3]. This certification project was a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre's Unit G.2 in Geel/Belgium, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Seibersdorf Austria, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in Oak Ridge, USA and the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), in GIF SUR YVETTE CEDEX, France. The IRMM-183-187 series of reference materials were originally produced and certified in the 1980s to 1990s. The so-called "major" isotope ratios n(235U)/n(238U) were certified using gas source mass spectrometry (GSMS) and the so-called "minor" isotope ratios n(234U)/n(238U) and n(236U)/n(238U) using thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). The minor ratios were re-certified in 2005 [4], but since several years customers like the IAEA have reported discrepancies of their measurement results from the certified values. Therefore a re-certification project was started by JRC-G2 in 2019, which included a complete re-characterization of the IRMM-183-187 series. For the measurement of the major ratios the double spike method (TIMS/DS) [5] according to ASTM C1871 [6] and for the minor ratios the modified total evaporation method (TIMS/MTE) [7,8] according to ASTM C1832 [9] were used. New verification measurements were performed using TIMS/MTE by ORNL and CEA, and historical data for TIMS/MTE measurements on three instruments from 2012-2021 were obtained from the IAEA. Based on the good agreement of the verification measurements and historical data with the new measurement results obtained during the re-characterization at JRC-G2, the isotope ratios of the IRMM-183-187 series were re-certified in line with ISO 17034 [1]. The re-certified IRMM-183-187 series of reference materials is recommended for the calibration of instruments and methods used for the measurement of the isotopic composition of uranium.

Book Preparation and Certification of Large Size Dried LSD Spike

Download or read book Preparation and Certification of Large Size Dried LSD Spike written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-Sized Dried (LSD) spikes are used as a fundamental part of the fissile material control of irradiated nuclear fuel and have been provided on a regular basis to safeguards authorities and industry for 30 years [1]. This report describes the preparation and certification of a new batch of LSD spikes. IRMM-1027w is a dried mixture of uranyl- and plutonium nitrate in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The material is certified for the masses of 235U, 238U and 239Pu and the uranium and plutonium isotope amount ratios per unit. The material was produced in accordance with ISO/IEC 17034:2016 [2]. The homogeneity and stability were assessed in accordance with ISO Guide 35:2017 [3] and the uncertainties of the certified values were calculated in accordance with Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) [4]. The certified reference materials uranium metal NBL PO CRM 112-A, enriched uranium metal NBL PO CRM 116-A and plutonium metal CETAMA MP2 were used as starting materials to prepare the mother solution. This solution was dispensed into individual vials by means of an automated robot system and subsequently evaporated to dryness. A solution of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)was added to the spike material and evaporated and dried. The organic matrix serves as a stabiliser to retain the driednuclear material at the bottom of the vial. In total, 862 units were produced. The heterogeneity of the batch was estimated based on the between-unit standard deviation and stability during dispatch and storage was assessed in accordance with ISO Guide 35:2017 [3]. The certified values were obtained from the gravimetric preparation of the mother solution, taking into account the mass, purity and isotopic composition of the starting materials, the mass of the mother solution, and the mass of an aliquot in each individual unit. The certified and indicative values with the exception of the 233U and 238Pu values were confirmed by isotope dilution thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) or thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) as independent methods on randomly selected units of IRMM-1027w or the mother solution. The main purpose of this material is the use as a spike isotopic reference material to measure the plutonium and uranium amount content of spent nuclear fuel solutions using IDMS. Each unit contains about 58.5 mg of uranium with a relative mass fraction m(235U)/m(U) of 19.0 % and 1.8 mg of plutonium with a relative mass fraction m(239Pu)/m(Pu) of 97.8 % as dried nitrates in CMC.

Book Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis

Download or read book Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis written by Paul De Bièvre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now becoming recognized in the measurement community that it is as important to communicate the uncertainty related to a specific measurement as it is to report the measurement itself. Without knowing the uncertainty, it is impossible for the users of the result to know what confidence can be placed in it; it is also impossible to assess the comparability of different measurements of the same parameter. This volume collects 20 outstanding papers on the topic, mostly published from 1999-2002 in the journal "Accreditation and Quality Assurance." They provide the rationale for why it is important to evaluate and report the uncertainty of a result in a consistent manner. They also describe the concept of uncertainty, the methodology for evaluating uncertainty, and the advantages of using suitable reference materials. Finally, the benefits to both the analytical laboratory and the user of the results are considered.
