Download or read book A World Without Meaning written by Zaki Laidi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sophisticated book by internationally renowned theorist Zaki Laidi, tackles the problem of individual identity in a rapidly changing global political environment. He argues that it is increasingly hard to find meaning in our ever-expanding world, especially after the collapse of political ideologies such as communism. With the breakup of countries such as the former Yugoslavia, it is clear that people are now looking to old models like nationalism and ethnicity to help them forge an identity. But how effective are these old certainties in a globalized world in a permanent state of flux?
Download or read book A World Without Meaning written by Zaki Laïdi and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative and incisive book, Zaki Laidi argues that as our world becomes ever larger, our ability to find meaning in it diminishes. With the end of communism came the end of the intimate alliance between power and ideology. No power in our globalised world can any longer claim to provide meaning. In despair we look back to old models (religious traditions, nationalism, ethnicity) to give us a sense of identity. But in a globalised world in a permanent state of flux, just how effective are these old certainties?

Download or read book Religion Law and Freedom written by Yahya Kamalipour and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-09-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion, Law, and Freedom: A Global Perspective introduces readers to diverse perspectives on the interplay of religion, law, and communications freedom in different cultures around the world. Through discussion and analysis of the religious mores and cultural values that a nation adheres to, a greater understanding of that nation, its laws, and its freedoms can be cultivated. Rather than suggesting that harmony can be achieved without conflict, the essays in this volume seek to present the reader with a variety of perspectives from which to view and understand the relationships among religion, law, and freedom in various cultures. This multifaceted analysis, therefore, helps readers draw their own conclusions as to the best way to resolve cultural conflict brought about by the growing global community. The book consists of fifteen chapters, authored or coauthored by 17 international scholars representing China, Germany, Israel, Iran, Japan, Latvia, Nigeria, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The chapters are organized into four parts: Perspectives on Eastern and Western Religions; Press Freedom in Religious and Secular Societies; Journalism, Advertising, and Ethical Issues; and Religion, Politics, Media, and Human Rights. Download or read book Pari de la Franchise written by Stéphane Dion and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-10-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book International Law Conflict and Development written by Walter Kälin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience and research have long shown an intrinsic link between human rights, conflict and development. This interdependence between different areas, doctrines, and disciplines calls for a genuinely coherent, holistic approach in International Affairs. With the challenges the work for the protection and respect of humanity encounters, this book intends to bring together articles and ideas that indicate the complexity of such an endeavor. The chapters, written by academics and practitioners encompass snapshots of crucial development lines as well as conceptual ideas and frameworks. In doing so the book provides insight to the principal understanding that peace efforts, encapsulating human rights, conflict management and development, can only be sustained and flourish as long as conflicting parties have at least a minimal consensus and will to settle their differences peacefully. As a Liber Amicorum for Joseph Voyame the book honors the determination for humanity and respect for human dignity and peaceful mitigation of conflict which marked his life and work.
Download or read book Representing Women written by Mercedes Mateo Diaz and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2024-10-31 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work discusses questions on political participation, representation and legitimacy in the European Union national parliaments. Three major empirical questions structure the book: What affects women's presence in parliaments?, Does the number of women in parliament have an effect? And are women in parliament representing women Empirical evidences show that institutional reforms need a 'minimal environment' in terms of socio-economic development so as to prove effective. As opposed to the critical mass theory, claiming that a few representatives cannot have an impact on the political outcomes, here the empirical evidences suggest that smaller groups can also influence the different components of the legislative process. The last part turns to the fundamental question of whether a parliament that is descriptively representative, i.e. in which the parliamentarians share certain characteristics with the voters, also is a substantively descriptive parliament, i.e. in which the parliamentarians mirror the voters' opinions. Evidence suggests that the electoral system's level of proportionality influences the extent to which assemblies socially and ideologically mirror their population. The book ends by advancing new hypotheses and setting up guidelines for future research.
