Book excerpt: The Bible rap contained in this book is supplemental to the Bible study guides I've written for the Boston Christian Bible Study Resources site (http://www.bcbsr.com). In my opinion, the vast majority of teaching materials available and techniques used in the evangelical community today speak mostly to those of a left-brain analytic mindset, of which I am no doubt a member. But all kinds of people are to be invited to the feast. How to invite someone of an artistic, intuitive nature to feast on the Word? This book is an attempt to minister to one's artistic and intuitive nature while attempting to keep to the accuracy and depth of the Word of God and the meaning of the Christian experience. --back

Book Urban God Talk

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andre E. Johnson
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2013-08-28
  • ISBN : 0739168304
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Urban God Talk written by Andre E. Johnson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban God Talk: Constructing a Hip Hop Spirituality, edited by Andre Johnson, is a collection of essays that examine the religious and spiritual in hip hop. The contributors argue that the prevailing narrative that hip hop offers nothing in the way of religion and spirituality is false. From its beginning, hip hop has had a profound spirituality and advocates religious views—and while not orthodox or systemic, nevertheless, many in traditional orthodox religions would find the theological and spiritual underpinnings in hip hop comforting, empowering, and liberating. In addition, this volume demonstrates how scholars in different disciplines approach the study of hip hop, religion, and spirituality. Whether it is a close reading of a hip hop text, ethnography, a critical studies approach or even a mixed method approach, this study is a pedagogical tool for students and scholars in various disciplines to use and appropriate for their own research and understanding. Urban God Talk will inspire not only scholars to further their research, but will also encourage publishers to print more in this field. The contributors to this in-depth study show how this subject is an underrepresented area within hip hop studies, and that the field is broad enough for numerous monographs, edited works, and journal publications in the future.

Book Beyond Christian Hip Hop

Download or read book Beyond Christian Hip Hop written by Erika D. Gault and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians and Christianity have been central to Hip Hop since its inception. This book explores the intersection of Christians and Hip Hop and the multiple outcomes of this intersection. It lays out the ways in which Christians and Hip Hop overlap and diverge. The intersection of Christians and Hip Hop brings together African diasporic cultures, lives, memories and worldviews. Moving beyond the focus on rappers and so-called "Christian Hip Hop," each chapter explores three major themes of the book: identifying Hip Hop, irreconcilable Christianity, and boundaries. There is a self-identified Christian Hip Hop (CHH) community that has received some scholarly attention. At the same time, scholars have analyzed Christianity and Hip Hop without focusing on the self-identified community. This book brings these various conversations together and show, through these three themes, the complexities of the intersection of Christians and Hip Hop. Hip Hop is more than rap music, it is an African diasporic phenomenon. These three themes elucidate the many characteristics of the intersection between Christians and Hip Hop and our reasoning for going beyond "Christian Hip Hop." This collection is a multi-faceted view of how religious belief plays a role in Hip Hoppas' lives and community. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of Religion and Hip Hop, Hip Hop, African Diasporas, Religion and the Arts, Religion and Race and Black Theology as well as Religious Studies more generally.

  • Pages : 140 pages

Download or read book If Jesus Was a Rapper written by Cellus Hamilton and published by Cellus Hamilton. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever listened to music created by Cellus Hamilton, you are aware that he is much more than a rapper. His lyrics are multidimensional, revealing him to be a sort of scholarly visionary. Because music is often subject to the listener’s interpretation, interviews have been the closest outlet we have towards understanding the complexities that exist within Mr. Hamilton. Here in his book, “If Jesus Was a Rapper”, he lays his heart bare. As the businessman, family-man, and clergyman aspects of Hamilton are revealed in his memoir, his life and journey through the music industry teach us more about Jesus than many straightforward theologians have. His personality, creativity, and boldness work together to present him as a wholistic human artist who is deeply in love with Jesus. While Hamilton seems to intentionally target the Christian creative, his rags-to-riches story easily connects to us all. By the end of the book, Jesus will likely be your new favorite rapper.

Book Rap Music and Street Consciousness

Download or read book Rap Music and Street Consciousness written by Cheryl Lynette Keyes and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first musicological history of rap music, Cheryl L. Keyes traces the genre's history from its roots in West African bardic traditions, the Jamaican dancehall tradition, and African American vernacular expressions to its permeation of the cultural mainstream as a major tenet of hip-hop lifestyle and culture. Rap music, according to Keyes, is a forum that addresses the political and economic disfranchisement of black youths and other groups, fosters ethnic pride, and displays culture values and aesthetics. Blending popular culture with folklore and ethnomusicology, Keyes offers a nuanced portrait of the artists, themes, and varying styles reflective of urban life and street consciousness. Drawing on the music, lives, politics, and interests of figures including Afrika Bambaataa, the "godfather of hip-hop," and his Zulu Nation, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Grandmaster Flash, Kool "DJ" Herc, MC Lyte, LL Cool J, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Ice-T, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and The Last Poets, Rap Music and Street Consciousness challenges outsider views of the genre. The book also draws on ethnographic research done in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and London, as well as interviews with performers, producers, directors, fans, and managers. Keyes's vivid and wide-ranging analysis covers the emergence and personas of female rappers and white rappers, the legal repercussions of technological advancements such as electronic mixing and digital sampling, the advent of rap music videos, and the existence of gangsta rap, Southern rap, acid rap, and dance-centered rap subgenres. Also considered are the crossover careers of rap artists in movies and television; rapper-turned-mogul phenomenons such as Queen Latifah; the multimedia empire of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs; the cataclysmic rise of Death Row Records; East Coast versus West Coast tensions; the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace; and the unification efforts of the Nation of Islam and the Hip-Hop Nation.

Book Let There Be Light

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lillian Colson Graham
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2020-09-16
  • ISBN : 1644166631
  • Pages : 101 pages

Download or read book Let There Be Light written by Lillian Colson Graham and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do I present this book when the Bible, the Bible dictionaries, concordances, and many books are available. Well, those were my thoughts exactly-being a seasoned Christian. However, when I shared my idea of a book of this kind, with young Christians and New Christians, the interest and enthusiasm levels were overwhelming. Therefore, this book is for the young and the New Christian, for the Seasoned Christians and the unbelievers. The purpose is to erase any fear of Bible study; to generate enthusiasm for the word "of God"; to nurture and "jumpstart" young and New Christians; to introduce many of the authors of the Bible; to cause the young in Christ to become enlightened by the "word" of God. The discussion topics should entertain the Seasoned Christian: and to light the path of the New Believer. Reach deep into their lives and meet them where they are. They are meant to touch lives, help to restore lives, and offer some direction. To the non-believers, my prayer is that they will read this book, discuss its contents, and draw near to God as a result. My prayer is that they will come to love Jesus Christ and appreciate the work that he did on the cross for all to be delivered from the bondage of sin. To the seasoned believers, my prayer is that you will read, enjoy, and use this book. But most of all, I pray that in the name of Jesus, you will introduce it to others. May God Bless You, Lillian Colson Graham

Book Holy Hip Hop in the City of Angels

Download or read book Holy Hip Hop in the City of Angels written by Christina Zanfagna and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program for monographs. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. In the 1990s, Los Angeles was home to numerous radical social and environmental eruptions. In the face of several major earthquakes and floods, riots and economic insecurity, police brutality and mass incarceration, some young black Angelenos turned to holy hip hop—a movement merging Christianity and hip hop culture—to “save” themselves and the city. Converting street corners to open-air churches and gangsta rap beats into anthems of praise, holy hip hoppers used gospel rap to navigate complicated social and spiritual realities and to transform the Southland’s fractured terrains into musical Zions. Armed with beats, rhymes, and bibles, they journeyed through black Lutheran congregations, prison ministries, African churches, reggae dancehalls, hip hop clubs, Nation of Islam meetings, and Black Lives Matter marches. Zanfagna’s fascinating ethnography provides a contemporary and unique view of black LA, offering a much-needed perspective on how music and religion intertwine in people's everyday experiences.
