Book Assessment of the Riparian Condition of Two Tributary Rivers in an Agricultural dominated Landscape in the Middle Reaches of the Magdalena River Santander Colombia

Download or read book Assessment of the Riparian Condition of Two Tributary Rivers in an Agricultural dominated Landscape in the Middle Reaches of the Magdalena River Santander Colombia written by María Alejandra Ariza Rojas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degradation of riparian zones in response to a growing demand for livestock and agriculture areas in the middle reaches of the Magdalena River in Colombia is a current pressing conservational issue. Thus, there is an urgent need for a rapid method of assessment and monitoring of riparian ecological condition that can be easily replicated and that can provide reliable information to conservational practitioners. The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of the Australian Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition (TRARC) method to characterize the riparian zones of two tributary rivers (San Juan and Carare) and to explore the main causes of ecological degradation. Results show a median-to-good overall riparian condition and moderate pressure levels at both tributaries. The San Juan River was characterized by greater regeneration and plant coverage, while the Carare River was mostly defined by human-derived pressure variables. Multivariate analysis further showed that only 15 out of the original 36 TRARC variables were needed to fully characterize the total variation of the riparian condition in the evaluated area. This study highlights the suitability of applying a modified TRARC method to assess lowland riparian condition in the Magdalena tributaries of Colombia.

Book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes

Download or read book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes written by Samantha Capon and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation communities in Australia's riverine landscapes are ecologically, economically and culturally significant. They are also among the most threatened ecosystems on the continent and have been dramatically altered as a result of human activities and climate change. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes brings together, for the first time, the results of the substantial amount of research that has been conducted over the last few decades into the biology, ecology and management of these important plant communities in Australia. The book is divided into four sections. The first section provides context with respect to the spatial and temporal dimensions of riverine landscapes in Australia. The second section examines key groups of riverine plants, while the third section provides an overview of riverine vegetation in five major regions of Australia, including patterns, significant threats and management. The final section explores critical issues associated with the conservation and management of riverine plants and vegetation, including water management, salinity, fire and restoration. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes highlights the incredible diversity and dynamic nature of riverine vegetation across Australia, and will be an excellent reference for researchers, academics and environmental consultants.

Book The Training Use and Water Quality Effects of Riparian Proper Functioning Condition Assessment in Nevada

Download or read book The Training Use and Water Quality Effects of Riparian Proper Functioning Condition Assessment in Nevada written by Robert John Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The limited spatial extent of riparian systems in Nevada belies their importance to the production of ecosystem services by the landscape as a whole. Management of these systems is complicated by legacy effects of historic management, contrasting and often conflicting perspectives among stakeholders, and differing philosophies and mandates among the various land management agencies charged with their care. Recently, there has been interest in increased collaboration in the management of riparian areas to mitigate these challenges. In widespread use in Nevada for up to 15 years, Proper Functioning Condition (PFC) assessment is a qualitative method for rapid riparian assessment. We investigated the effectiveness of the teaching of PFC, its utility in the field, and current use in management through a survey of class participants, field users, and land managers. The results indicate that PFC is widely supported by those who use it. The technical aspects of performing PFC seem to be slightly better understood than its more nuanced use in building cooperation and trust among stakeholders and developing appropriate, adaptive, and collaborative management for riparian areas and their adjoining uplands. High quality water is understood to be a product of functional ecosystems. If PFC is helping managers steer riparian areas toward higher functionality, there should be improvements in physical, chemical, and biological water quality. Through statistical analysis of a variety of available data, we looked for evidence of such a relationship. While we were not able to show a connection between PFC-driven management and water quality, the attempt to do so provided insight into some challenges of using water quality standards and monitoring as a basis for riparian management and suggested some appropriate directions for future study.

Book Wetland and Stream Rapid Assessments

Download or read book Wetland and Stream Rapid Assessments written by John Dorney and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetland and Stream Rapid Assessments: Development, Validation, and Application describes the scientific and environmental policy background for rapid wetland and stream assessments, how such assessment methods are developed and statistically verified, and how they can be used in environmental decision-making—including wetland and stream permitting. In addition, it provides several case studies of method development and use in various parts of the world. Readers will find guidance on developing and testing such methods, along with examples of how these methods have been used in various programs across North America. Rapid wetland and stream functional assessments are becoming frequently used methods in federal, state and local environmental permitting programs in North America. Many governments are interested in developing new methods or improving existing methods for their own jurisdictions. This book provides an ideal guide to these initiatives. Offers guidance for the use and evaluation of rapid assessments to developers and users of these methods, as well as students of wetland and stream quality Contains contributions from sources who are successful in academia, industry and government, bringing credibility and relevance to the content Includes a statistically-based approach to testing the validity of the rapid method, which is very important to the usefulness and defensibility of assessment methods

Book Development of a Riparian Condition Assessment Protocol for Northern Gulf Rivers Using Remote Sensing and Ground Survey

Download or read book Development of a Riparian Condition Assessment Protocol for Northern Gulf Rivers Using Remote Sensing and Ground Survey written by Andrew Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary focus of this study was to establish the riparian condition baseline against which future condition trends could be measured, and the development of a robust, repeatable method of analysis. However, during the course of the study, researchers found that the dramatic changes in woody vegetation in both the channel zone and across floodplains warranted much more detailed investigation to establish whether the trends elucidated in this study are real, and what the drivers of the changes are (is there a clear trend through time or is there some variability that is a function of inter-annual climatic variability). -- Publisher website.
