Sharp suits, fast cars, lavish expense accounts, and exclusive clubs are the comforts of lives lived at a furious pace, where betrayal and blackmail are paths to success, extramarital sex is an equal opportunity job perk, and an initial public offering might be a matter of life or death. An ambitious middle manager offers his wife to his new boss. An overheard conversation between two powerful executives leads to unexpected consequences for the eavesdropper. A cocky young investment banker is sent to Moscow on his first big opportunity---and finds more than he bargained for. A Ferrari-driving businesswoman plays a wicked prank after an anonymous sexual encounter. These and other characters are brought to life with a few deft brushstrokes, as each story veers through twists and turns to a surprising end. David Charters is a keen-eyed observer and denizen of this world, and the stories of The Insiders are witty, suspenseful, entertaining---and too close to truth for comfort.

Book excerpt: My name is Robin, an Essex boy at heart, and as things go, I live a good life now on and off in the west of Ireland in a beautiful picturesque place called the Galway bay. There are some people who would have called me and my mates gangsters. Sure we got up to mischief, but it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. We didn’t like doing what we did and wanted to get out as soon as we had made enough money. We got into this game by accident in some ways, but then we stayed that far under the radar; we went deeper than a nuclear submarine. Definitely not our interpretation of gangsters. We didn’t go around carrying guns, threatening or beating up people, just normal run-of-the-mill guys just trying to earn a few bob and lived by the motto “Don’t pull, don’t push and be lucky.” But now having given up all my wild ways, if you would like to call it that, sold some of my share in the business I have and earned enough money just to spend my time doing the things I love in life—a bit of painting, fishing, part-time teaching, and having the odd pint of Guinness, or as they call it here porter. For the past twenty-odd years life just can’t get better. So with this in mind, it gives me time to reflect on one particular day twenty-odd years ago in a bookies in Romford, Essex.

  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Albert s Ark written by Fred Crampton and published by Author House. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, ex marine and mercenary Albert Crowther has a vision to set up a floating island: a modern day Ark! He said he had had enough of 'those political fat cat bastards with their taxes, rules and regulation!' He was sick of ever increasing violence, shootings, stabbings, drug and alcohol abuse on Britain's streets. He convinced his long suffering wife Amy that they needed to 'get of the planet', set up a group of like minded people and start a new life away from the corruption of modern day living. Relationships developed on the Ark with friendships, love and romance, affairs, steamy sex, marital problems and friction. Daily life was peppered with humour; drama; births, deaths and marriages; celebrations and surprises. The dream was to live the 'good life' on the Ark. Little did the community know at the start of their new life together how elusive Utopia would be. The characters from different backgrounds, status and gender live together in close proximity, interacting in a multicultural melting pot, but seem unable to escape from corruption of external influence and attack, let alone the unpredictability of the weather and human nature. But ever the optimist, as Albert often remarked 'You never know what's over the horizon'.

Precious trees, carried from Scotland across the world as seedlings. A poignant reminder of home. As they mature, so too do Freddie, the eldest son of Sophia Mackenzie, and Ben and Ed, twin sons of Nancy Lawton. To Atewhai, the wise old Maori woman, the growth of the saplings into mature trees is matched by the passage of the boys into manhood. And, when one of the precious cedar trees is damaged in a storm, does it foretell of tragedy involving one of the boys? Atewhai certainly thinks so…… Join us as our settlers embrace the late 1860s, a period of rapid change in New Zealand. Railways, improved roads and better communications are beginning to open up this remote and spectacular corner of the world to visitors. Some fall in love and find it hard to leave the basin, while others are torn between love and a desire to be involved in this exciting period of progress. Who will stay, and who will leave for ever?
