Book Rainfall Observations and Modelling

Download or read book Rainfall Observations and Modelling written by Lakshmi Kumar TV and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides chapters with subjects ranging from the basic understanding of rainfall variability to the impact of climate change with novel methodologies and concepts. This book is mainly intended for post-graduate doctoral students and early career researchers for their use in academic and research programs. This book compiles the chapters with different data sets that are publicly available and from site-based measurements along with the data generation methods and modeling aspects. Rainfall plays an important role; its deficiency leads to meteorological droughts and further impacts hydrological, agricultural, and socioeconomic droughts, and its surplus causes floods over urban areas. With the advancement of technology, it is possible to determine future rainfall accurately by collating the data from observations, radar, and satellite and model simulations. The current book is of immense help in evaluating and understanding the atmospheric processes governed by the various physical laws, and the results of the chapters provide deep insight for a better understanding of rainfall phenomena across the different regions of the world.

Book Microwave Propagation and Remote Sensing

Download or read book Microwave Propagation and Remote Sensing written by Pranab Kumar Karmakar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because prevailing atmospheric/troposcopic conditions greatly influence radio wave propagation above 10 GHz, the unguided propagation of microwaves in the neutral atmosphere can directly impact many vital applications in science and engineering. These include transmission of intelligence, and radar and radiometric applications used to probe the atmosphere, among others. Where most books address either one or the other, Microwave Propagation and Remote Sensing: Atmospheric Influences with Models and Applications melds coverage of these two subjects to help readers develop solutions to the problems they present. This reference offers a brief, elementary account of microwave propagation through the atmosphere and discusses radiometric applications in the microwave band used to characterize and model atmospheric constituents, which is also known as remote sensing. Summarizing the latest research results in the field, as well as radiometric models and measurement methods, this book covers topics including: Free space propagation Reflection, interference, polarization, and other key aspects of electromagnetic wave propagation Radio refraction and its effects on propagation delay Methodology of estimating water vapor attenuation using radiosonde data Knowledge of rain structures and use of climatological patterns to estimate/measure attenuation of rain, snow, fog, and other prevalent atmospheric particles and human-made substances Dual/multifrequency methodology to deal with the influence of clouds on radiometric attenuation Deployment of microwaves to ascertain various tropospheric conditions Composition and characteristics of the troposphere, to help readers fully understand microwave propagation Derived parameters of water, free space propagation, and conditions and variable constituents such as water vapor and vapor pressure, density, and ray bending

Book Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth s Surface and Atmosphere

Download or read book Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Earth s Surface and Atmosphere written by 0 Pampaloni and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of refereed papers presented at the 6 Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing of the Environment held in Florence, Italy on March 15-18, 1999. Over the last two decades, passive microwave remote sensing has made considerable progress, and has achieved significant results in the study of the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Many years of observations with ground-based and satellite-borne sensors have made an important contribution to improving our knowledge of many geophysical processes of the Earth's environment and of global changes. The evolution in microwave radiometers aboard satellites has increased steadily over recent years. At the same time, many investigations have been carried out both to improve the algorithms for the retrieval of geophysical parameters and to develop new technologies. The book is divided into four main sections: three of these are devoted to the observation of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, and the fourth, to future missions and new technologies. The first section deals with the study of sea and land surfaces, and reports recent advances in remote sensing of ocean wind, sea ice, soil moisture and vegetation biomass, including electromagnetic modelling and the assimilation of radiometric data in models of land surface processes. The following two sections are devoted to the measurement of atmospheric quantities which are of fundamental importance in climatology and meteorology, and, since they influence radio-wave propagation, they also impact on several other fields, including geodesy, navigational satellite and radioastronomy. The last section presents an overview of new technologies and plans for future missions.

Book Rain Induced Attenuation Studies for 38 GHZ Satellite Link in Tropical Region

Download or read book Rain Induced Attenuation Studies for 38 GHZ Satellite Link in Tropical Region written by Khairayu Badron and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite operations at 38 GHz in tropical and equatorial regions are constrained as a result of attenuation from rain. Measured statistics for 20 consecutive months of 38GHz terrestrial link signal attenuation measurements in Malaysia are presented in this thesis. In the absence of an actual satellite-Earth link, measured data acquired from a microwave link establishment should be able to provide some preliminary critical thoughts of the V-band link"s characteristics. Such information is considered very pertinent for earth space communication link design and can be used for initial groundwork plan for the engineers as well as researchers. The measured attenuation statistics are then fittingly scaled up and compared with The ITU-R prediction models. Significant differences are evident between calculated attenuation with predicted values using the latest ITU-R models; which appear to underestimate the annual statistics. The statistics are then further explored to examine seasonal and diurnal variations. Characteristics of rain events such as fade duration, inter-fade interval and average duration are presented. It is essential to identify such characteristics for the design and implementation of future fade countermeasure techniques on satellite links. This thesis also reviews the current status of available propagation data and information relating to the design of satellite telecommunication systems in tropical regions. With broadcast application in mind, the seasonal and diurnal variability of rain attenuation was investigated in addition to the compilation of annual cumulative statistics. For instance, a satellite broadcast system may find greatest viewer demand during the late afternoon and evening hours, where in some climates highest rainfalls occur. Based on the rain attenuation and some scientific concerns on millimetre wave, a new model to predict rain attenuation in tropical region was developed. The model was configured taking consideration of the physical structure of the rain drops at 38 GHz frequency, type of precipitation and the scattering and absorption properties when attenuated by hydrometeors.

Book Advances in Numerical Model Data Assimilation and Observations for Hazardous Weather Prediction

Download or read book Advances in Numerical Model Data Assimilation and Observations for Hazardous Weather Prediction written by Feifei Shen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate and timely forecasting of hazardous weather events induced by meso-scale convection systems (MCSs) is the key to safeguarding lives and property. Yet the MCS forecasting is challenging due to imperfect initial numerical conditions that lack meso-scale convective information and multi-scale dynamic and thermodynamic consistency. Remote sensing observations are the primary source of estimating weather conditions, such as moisture, wind velocity, and precipitation. It is of fundamental pivotality to develop data assimilation technologies to enhance applications of multi-source observations. Performance assessments of new types of observations facilitate the network designment for regional- and storm-scale numerical models. This Research Topic seeks submissions underscoring the improvement of the accuracy of MCS predictions, warnings, and decision support for high-impact weather events as well as observation network designs.
