Book The Risks of Nuclear Energy Technology

Download or read book The Risks of Nuclear Energy Technology written by Günter Kessler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the risks of nuclear power stations. The security concept of reactors is explained. Measures against the spread of radioactivity after a severe accident, accidents of core melting and a possible crash of an air plane on reactor containment are discussed. The book covers three scientific subjects of the safety concepts of Light Water Reactors: – A first part describes the basic safety design concepts of operating German Pressurized Water Reactors and Boiling Water Reactors including accident management measures introduced after the reactor accidents of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. These safety concepts are also compared with the experiences of the Fukushima accidents. In addition, the safety design concepts of the future modern European Pressurized Water Reactor (EPR) and of the future modern Boiling Water Reactor SWR-1000 (KERENA) are presented. These are based on new safety research results of the past decades. – In a second, part the possible crash of military or heavy commercial air planes on reactor containment is analyzed. It is shown that reactor containments can be designed to resist to such an airplane crash. – In a third part, an online decision system is presented. It allows to analyze the distribution of radioactivity in the atmosphere and to the environment after a severe reactor accident. It provides data for decisions to be taken by authorities for the minimization of radiobiological effects to the population. This book appeals to readers who have an interest in save living conditions and some understanding for physics or engineering.

Book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities

Download or read book Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s, the National Cancer Institute initiated an investigation of cancer risks in populations near 52 commercial nuclear power plants and 10 Department of Energy nuclear facilities (including research and nuclear weapons production facilities and one reprocessing plant) in the United States. The results of the NCI investigation were used a primary resource for communicating with the public about the cancer risks near the nuclear facilities. However, this study is now over 20 years old. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that the National Academy of Sciences provide an updated assessment of cancer risks in populations near USNRC-licensed nuclear facilities that utilize or process uranium for the production of electricity. Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 focuses on identifying scientifically sound approaches for carrying out an assessment of cancer risks associated with living near a nuclear facility, judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of various statistical power, ability to assess potential confounding factors, possible biases, and required effort. The results from this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of cancer risk assessment, which will be carried out in Phase 2. This report is beneficial for the general public, communities near nuclear facilities, stakeholders, healthcare providers, policy makers, state and local officials, community leaders, and the media.

Book Pressurized Water Reactors

Download or read book Pressurized Water Reactors written by Yurugi Kanzaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressurized Water Reactors, Volume Three in the JSME Series on Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, compiles the latest research on Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) into a very comprehensive reference, beginning with its history. The reader is then guided through optimum design processes for PWRs, considering safety throughout. The authors then discuss thermal-hydraulic aspects within the PWR system and inside the reactor core, making this a valuable resource for nuclear and thermal engineers and researchers. Combining their wealth of experience, the book presents in-depth knowledge on the advancement and improvement of fuel rods that is gleaned from decades of experience and lessons learned. The inclusion of analysis codes for the design and safety elements ensure makes this a unique reference which will provide the reader with a solid understanding which they can transfer to their own professional and research settings. Future prospects for next generation PWR and Small Modular Reactors are also discussed, giving the reader a basis for further research of their own. Contains contributions from the leaders and pioneers in nuclear research at the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers and draws upon their combined wealth of knowledge and experience Includes analysis codes, such as RELAP5, for the design and safety improvement of pressurized water reactors (PWRs) Presents history, examples, and case studies from Japan and other key regions, such as the United States and Europe

Book Radiation Damage Surveillance of Power Reactor Pressure Vessels

Download or read book Radiation Damage Surveillance of Power Reactor Pressure Vessels written by C. Z Serpan (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deleterious effect of high energy neutrons upon the mechanical properties of reactor pressure vessel steels has prompted the employment of material surveillance programs in many nuclear power plants. These programs provide for the exposure of test specimens representative of the reactor pressure vessel at in-reactor locations, wherein they will experience the same thermal and radiation damage history as the vessel itself. Evaluation of these specimens, which reveals the progressive changes in the mechanical properties of the vessel, provides a basis upon which operational procedures and maximum lifetime exposure may be formulated for the plant. A review and an analysis of several instances of shortcomings in surveillance programs are presented along with a set of recommendations for consideration in planning new surveillance programs. In utilizing these recommendations, pressure vessel surveillance programs can be made to provide valuable information for use in determining plant operations; at the same time results from these programs may add to the general knowledge of radiation effects in pressure vessel steels or other materials subject to radiation. Recognition of the value of surveillance programs and their conscientious application should further the public acceptance of nuclear reactors as safe alternative power systems.
