Book Quantum Electrodynamics

Download or read book Quantum Electrodynamics written by Gunnar Källen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kallen's Quantenelektrodynamik provides a concise treatment of the subject. Its strong points are the careful attention to ex planatory detail, the methodical coverage of all the maj or results and the straightforward, lucid style. Certainly it will be a val uable reference for one learning the subject or for one who re quires the details of the practical results. Of course modern quantum field theory has now grown far beyond its dramatic be ginnings in electrodynamics and we have therefore included some references to introduce the reader to the more recent and more specialized literature. We have corrected some minor errors: we would appreciate it if readers would inform us of any others which they find. We thank Professors Paul Urban and C. MtSller for permission to use the biographical material on Kallen. We also wish to thank Springer-Verlag for undertaking publication of this edition by an unorthodox method, but one which will reduce the cost to the reader. In particular, we are grateful to Dr. H. Mayer-Kaupp and Mr. Herb Stillman for their kind cooperation. Finally, we thank Mr. Michael Teague for reading and commenting on the first dozen sections and we thank Mrs. Joanne Downs for ed iting and typing the final manuscript. May 1972 C. K. Iddings M. Book Climbing the Mountain

Download or read book Climbing the Mountain written by K. A. Milton and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography ever written on the distinguished physicist Julian Schwinger. Schwinger was one of the most important and influential scientists of the twentieth century. The list of his contributions is staggering, from his early work leading to the Schwinger action principle, Euclidean quantum field theory, and the genesis of the standard model, to later valuable work on magnetic charge and the Casimir effect. He also shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics with Richard Feynman. However, even among physicists, understanding and recognition of his work remains limited. This book by Mehra and Milton, both of whom were personally acquainted with Schwinger, presents a unique portrait that sheds light on both his personality and his work through discussion of his lasting influence on science. Anyone who wishes to gain a deeper understanding of one of the great physicists of this century needs to read this book.

Book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on Radiative Corrections: Results and Perspectives was held at the University of Sussex in fine weather between July 9 and 14 1989. The Workshop was weIl timed: the day after its concluding session the first beam at LEP was circulated. The Original aims of the Workshop were twofold: first to review the existing theoretical work on electroweak radiative corrections in the light of the initial experiments at SLC and LEP, and to attempt to obtain a consensus on the best means of carrying out the calculations of the various processes. This aim became Working Group A on Renormalisation Schemes tor Electroweak Radiative Corrections. The second aim was to review the experimental implementation of radiative corrections and this became Working Group B. Here the problem was to obtain a consensus on the use of Monte Carlo event generators. At the time (March 1987) when Friedrich Dydak wrote to one of us (ND) to suggest a Workshop on the subject of electroweak radiative corrections to take place just before experiments at LEP were to begin, the main theoretical problem was that there was no agreement among theorists on the use of a specific renormalization scheme. Similarly, it was already becoming clear that it was going to be very difficult to compare the experimental results of different groups because they would use different event generators and experimental cuts of their data.
