Book Innovative Polymeric Adsorbents

Download or read book Innovative Polymeric Adsorbents written by Kyoichi Saito and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the reader with a story-based narrative of discovery and development of radiation-induced graft polymerization. The report presented here accomplishes this by relating the inspiring account of research and development based on long-term collaboration among a professor, an engineer, and an entrepreneur. Their goal, ultimately successful, was to come up with a method for grafting functional polymer chains onto existing trunk polymers. The desired outcome was to produce feasible forms for practical use as adsorbents such as porous hollow-fiber membranes, porous sheets, nonwoven fabrics, and fibers. Adsorbents that specifically and efficiently bind to target ions and molecules are essential for capturing uranium species in seawater and antibody drugs in biological fluids and for removing metal ions from ultrapure water and radioactive cesium ions from contaminated water. This unique volume, with its clearly written text and many illustrative figures and diagrams, demonstrates the advantages of the high-adsorption capacity and rate and the easy handling of new polymeric adsorbents over conventional adsorbents. The dynamic behavior of graft chains as described here is certain to appeal especially to chemists, physicists, and material scientists as well as to other readers with an interest in this valuable subject.

Book A Comparison of Radiation induced Graft Copolymerization Utilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

Download or read book A Comparison of Radiation induced Graft Copolymerization Utilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators written by George Odian and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An 1100 curie cobalt-60 source, a 1.0 Mev. dynamitron electron accelerator and a 2.0 Mev. Van de Graaff electron accelerator were used in an investigation of the radiation induced graft copolymerization of a methacrylic acid-styrene (2:1 mole ratio) mixture onto polypropylene. A qualitative analysis of the graft copolymer composition, based on spectroscopic analyses and on the dyeability of the grafted samples indicated that isotope initiated grafts are richer in the more polar component than equivalent accelerator initiated copolymer grafts.

Book Radiation Chemistry of Polymers

Download or read book Radiation Chemistry of Polymers written by V.S. Ivanov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the series "New Concepts in Polymer Science", this volume contains information on the main theoretical and practical problems involved in radiation chemistry of polymers. The processes of polymerization and modification of polymers by grafting, crosslinking and degradation, induced by ionizing radiation, are all described, as well as the radiation resistance of polymers and their protection from radiation. The book also contains applications of radiation chemistry of polymers, such as: principles of selection of radiation-chemical processes for industrial use; choice of radiation sources for specific processes; modification of textile and film materials by grafting; manufacturing of heat-shrinkable, thermostable and mechanically strong polymer products; composites; rubber vulcanizates and self-adhesive products; paints and coatings; man-made fibres; materials for microelectronics; and polymer materials for medical purposes.

Download or read book Modification of Polymers written by Charles E. Carraher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sheer volume of topics which could have been included under our general title prompted us to make some rather arbitrary decisions about content. Modification by irradiation is not included because the activity in this area is being treated elsewhere. We have chosen to emphasize chemical routes to modification and have striven to pre sent as balanced a representation of current activity as time and page count permit. Industrial applications, both real and potential, are included. Where appropriate, we have encouraged the contributors to include review material to help provide the reader with adequate context. The initial chapter is a review from a historical perspective of polymer modification and contains an extensive bibliography. The remainder of the book is divided into four general areas: Reactions and Preparation of Copolymers Reactions and Preparation of Block and Graft Copolymers Modification Through Condensation Reactions Applications The chemical modification of homopolymers such as polyvinylchlo ride, polyethylene, poly(chloroalkylene sulfides), polysulfones, poly chloromethylstyrene, polyisobutylene, polysodium acrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloroformate, sulfonated polystyrene; block and graft copolymers such as poly(styrene-block-ethylene-co-butylene block-styrene), poly(I,4-polybutadiene-block ethylene oxide), star chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylene, poly(isobutylene-co-2,3-dimethyl- 1,3-butadiene), poly(styrene-co-N-butylmethacrylate); cellulose, dex tran and inulin, is described.

Book Development of Transparent Plastic Moisture Barriers by Radiation induced Graft Polymerization

Download or read book Development of Transparent Plastic Moisture Barriers by Radiation induced Graft Polymerization written by RADIATION APPLICATIONS INC LONG ISLAND CITY N Y. and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grafting of various monomers to polyethylene for the purpose of improving moisture barrier properties of the polymer has been studied. Monomers employed were, primarily, vinylidene chloride, chlorotrifluoroethylene and bromotrifluoroethylene. Some co-grafting with vinylidene chloride and other monomers was also performed. Grafting was primarily initiated by gamma irradiation; some studies with ultraviolet and chemical initiation were undertaken. The moisture barrier properties were improved by ca. 50% with a high vinylidene chloride graft, with a low vinylidene chloride graft prepared in the presence of chain regulator, and with a vinylidene chloride copolymer graft (all prepared by gamma irradiation). Grafting of chlorotrifluoroethylene could be performed, but the WVTR decreased with increased grafting levels. (Author).
