Book excerpt: This report reviews the subject of electromagnetic wave propagation near the earth's surface as it relates to the detection of low-flying aircraft by ground-based radars. Separate sections describe how current knowledge of the three fundamental physical phenomena -- refraction, reflection, and diffraction -- is applied to the problems of low-altitude propagation. Simple models incorporating these phenomena are discussed: (1) propagation over a plane with arbitrary reflection coefficient, (2) propagation over a knife-edge on a plane, and (3) propagation over a smooth, spherical earth. Computer programs for models (2) and (3) are given in the Appendices. We include a bibliography of the literature on which this report is based: books, journal articles, and technical reports. References are listed alphabetically by first author, and subject indices are given for major subject headings. 0.

Book excerpt: Predictions of propagation loss made by the computer programs Radio Physical Optics (RPO) Computer Software Configuration Item (CSCI) and M-Layer are compared. The results of the high frequency parabolic equation approximation, as formulated in RPO, agree almost always with those derived from the low frequency modal computation as formulated in M-Layer. But at low altitudes in the neighborhood of the radar horizon, deviations between RPO and M-Layer become significant for some cases. RPO appears not to be able to properly account for the effects of a high altitude surface-based duct at a short range. Since the discrepancies fan in regions of importance to naval operations, a definitive resolution is an urgent task to be undertaken in the immediate future.

This short course has been presented an nually at Georgia Tech since 1969, and a very comprehensive set of course notes has evolved during that seventeen year period. The 1986 edition of these notes ran to 22 chapters, and all of the authors involved, except Mr. Barrett, were full time members of the Georgia Tech research faculty. After considerable encouragement from various persons at the university and within the radar community, we undertook the task of editing the course notes for formal publication. The contents of the book that ensued tend to be practical in nature, since each contributing author is a practicing engineer or scientist and each was selected to write on a topic embraced by his area(s) of expertise. Prime examples are Chaps. 2, 5, and 10, which were authored by E. F. Knott, G. W. Ewell, and N. C. Currie, respectively. Each of these three researchers is rec ognized in the radar community as an expert in the technical area that his chap ter addresses, and each had already authored and published a major book on his subject. Several other contributing authors, including Dr. Bodnar, Mr. Bruder, Mr. Corriher, Dr. Reedy, Dr. Trebits, and Mr. Scheer, also have major book publications to their credit.
