When Tidy Castle arrives, brand-new and grand in every way, the Racketty-Packetty House has never looked shabbier, and it is shoved in the corner of Cynthia's nursery. It was in the corner behind the door, and that was not at all a fashionable neighborhood. Racketty-Packetty House had been pushed there to be out of the way when Tidy Castle was brought in, on Cynthia's birthday. As soon as she saw Tidy Castle Cynthia did not care for Racketty-Packetty House and indeed was quite ashamed of it. She thought the corner behind the door quite good enough for such a shabby old dolls' house, when there was the beautiful big new one built like a castle and furnished with the most elegant chairs and tables and carpets and curtains and ornaments and pictures and beds and baths and lamps and book-cases, and with a knocker on the front door, and a stable with a pony cart in it at the back. The minute she saw it she called out:

She was best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden (1911) and Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886). Her first story was published in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. Her main writing talent was combining realistic detail of workingclass life with a romantic plot. Her first novel was published in 1877; That Lass o' Lowrie's was a story of Lancashire life. After moving to Washington, D.C., Burnett wrote the novels Haworth's (1879), Louisiana (1880), A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883), as well as a play, Esmeralda (1881), written with William Gillette. Her later works include Sara Crewe, or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's (1888) - later rewritten as A Little Princess (1905); and A Lady of Quality (1896) - considered one of the best of her plays. The Lost Prince was published in 1915, and The Head of the House of Coombe was published in Canada in 1922. During World War I, Burnett put her beliefs about what happens after death into writing with her novella The White People (1917).

This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to Little Lord Fauntleroy, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and other beloved classics of childhood, Frances Hodgson Burnett created a delightful legacy of short stories for children. This volume includes six of the best of these tales. "Racketty-Packetty House," the centerpiece of the collection, is a touching tale of a once-elegant dollhouse and its shabby inhabitants, happy creatures who love to dance. But the little girl who owns the dolls is tired of them, much preferring her new Tidy Castle dollhouse with its haughty, upperclass dolls, and her nurse wants to burn the Racketty-Packetty House. Children will love finding out what happens to the old house and its ragtag occupants. Also included here are "Behind the White Brick," a Lewis Carroll–like fantasy of a hidden world behind a chimney's brickwork; "The Story of Prince Fairyfoot," a fairy tale about a young man of royalty who, because of his tiny feet, is rejected by his parents; "Sara Crewe," an early version of A Little Princess; as well as "Little Saint Elizabeth" and The Proud Little Grain of Wheat." Heartwarming and instructive, these charming stories ― reprinted here complete and unabridged ― will enthrall anyone with a love of make-believe. They are sure to delight today's youngsters as much as they entertained children generations ago.
