Book Racing the Clock

Download or read book Racing the Clock written by Bernd Heinrich and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning, much-loved biologist turns his gaze on himself, using his long-distance running to illuminate the changes to a human body over a lifetime Part memoir, part scientific investigation, Racing the Clock is the book biologist and natural historian Bernd Heinrich has been waiting his entire life to write. A dedicated and accomplished marathon (and ultra-marathon) runner who won his first marathon at age thirty-nine, Heinrich looks deeply at running, aging, and the body, exploring the unresolved relationship between metabolism, diet, exercise, and age. Why do some bodies age differently than others? How much control do we have over that process and what effect, if any, does being active have? Bringing to bear research from his entire career and in the spirit of his classic Why We Run, Heinrich probes the questions of how we use energy and continue to adapt to our mutable surroundings and circumstances. Beyond that, he examines how our bodies change while we age but also how we can work with, if not overcome, many of these changes—and what all this tells us about evolution and the mechanisms of life, health, and happiness. Racing the Clock offers fascinating and surprising conclusions, all while bringing the reader along on Heinrich’s compelling journey to what he says will be his final race—a fifty-kilometer race at age eighty.

Book excerpt: I had a constant battle to get where I am today. Scrimping and scraping, people telling me not to do it, I couldn't do it. That my life wouldn't amount to very much. Now I might have had a bit of natural talent but I got here because of pure determination and persistence. Stubbornness you might say. I always went that extra mile, pushed myself that bit harder than anyone else and never took anything for granted. It was 1954 when Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton. In those days they cycled in clubs and once Beryl started she was smitten, not only with Charlie, but by the thrill and freedom found on two wheels. Beryl was better than good, she was the best, and she was determined to stay that way. Beryl Burton was five times world-pursuit champion, thirteen times national champion, twice road-racing world champion and twelve times national champion. Her accolades include time trials, former world-record holder, former British record-holder, numerous sports awards an MBE and an OBE. Burton was one of the most astonishing sports people ever to have lived, but she remains something of a mystery. Beryl, which celebrates the extraordinary sporting achievements of this inspirational cyclist, has been specially commissioned as an adaptation from Maxine Peake's acclaimed 2012 Radio 4 play and marks her stage-writing debut. It received its world premiere on 30 June 2014 at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in the Courtyard Theatre.

Book The Courage To Start

Download or read book The Courage To Start written by John "The Penguin" Bingham and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." Take your first step toward fitness and a happier, healthier life. Has the idea of running crossed your mind, but you haven't acted on it because you don't think you have the body of a runner? Have you thought about running but quit before you started because you knew that you would be breathless at the end of your driveway? Well, put aside those fears because you can do it. John Bingham, author of the popular Runner's World column "The Penguin Chronicles," transformed himself from an overweight couch potato who smoked into a runner who has completed eleven marathons and hundreds of road races. Forget about the image of a perfect body in skintight clothes, and don't worry about how fast or how far you go. Bingham shows how anyone can embrace running as a life-enhancing activity -- rather than as a competition you will never win. In an entertaining blend of his own success story and practical advice, Bingham provides reasonable guidelines for establishing a program of achievable goals; offers tips on clothing, running shoes, and other equipment; and explains how anyone can prepare for and run distances ranging from a few miles to marathons. After all, in running and in life, the difference between success and failure sometimes comes down to a single step. Waddle on, friends.

Book excerpt: Kyra and Katya are super girls. At the same time they are Saskia and Saskia, a couple of normal teenage girls. Naturally they can't spend all their time as the SuperTwins, so the Saskias have ordinary jobs to go to, and ordinary lives to lead. Despite that, they are always on hand to use their powers to deal with disasters like tornados, train crashes, and a collapsed school. Occasionally they have to use their powers while being the Saskias, saving the Prime Ministers life and subduing a gunman at the plant where they work being a case in point. Sometimes it's nice to use those powers just for themselves, on a day out, to the Moon! Their ability to travel in time sees them appear on TV, both as the Saskias and the SuperTwins - at the same time. Just because they look like Saskia and Saskia instead of Kyra and Katya doesn’t stop them helping people to achieve what they want in life, Rio gets to do what she wants, with a little help from the girls as they compete against each other in racing cars.

  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Citation written by Phil Georgeff and published by Taylor Trade Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Citation (1945-1970) retired in mid-1951, he was horseracing's first and, to that point, only millionaire racehorse. Following his 1948 triumphs at the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont in 1948, it would be twenty-five years before another horse (Secreteriat) would again wear the coveted Triple Crown. Citation, by legendary announcer and longtime horseracing insider Phil Georgeff, reveals all about the thoroughbred, his remarkable career, and those in his inner circle. Georgeff delves into Citation's unusual bloodline; the death of his original rider, Al Snider, swept out to sea while fishing off the Florida keys; Citation's stunning 1948 Triple Crown victory; and the ultimate effects of the horse's excessive, aggressive schedule (racing on little rest after traveling cross-country in sweltering vans and railroad boxcars). Based on interviews from those who knew the thoroughbred, including famed jockey Eddie Arcaro and renowned son-and-father trainers Ben A. and Jimmy Jones; Citation is more than merely the biography of a gifted horse. It the full story of the greatest sports figure in the history of horseracing, a champion who won or placed in thirty different contests in his career and whose spirit continue to captivate the American public.

Book It s Been Said Before

Download or read book It s Been Said Before written by Orin Hargraves and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Careful writers and speakers agree that clich?s are generally to be avoided. However, nearly all of us continue to use them. Why do they persist in our language? In It's Been Said Before, lexicographer Orin Hargraves examines the peculiar idea and power of the clich?. He helps readers understand why certain phrases became clich?s and why they should be avoided -- or why they still have life left in them. Indeed, clich?s can be useful -- even powerful. And few people even agree on which expressions are clich?s and which are not. Many regard any frequent idiom as a clich?, and a phrase regarded as a clich? in one context may be seen simply as an effective expression in another. Examples drawn from data about actual usage support Hargraves' identification of true clich?s. They also illuminate his commentary on usage problems and helpful suggestions for eliminating clich?s where they serve no useful purpose. Concise and lively, It's Been Said Before serves as a guide to the most overused phrases in the English language -- and to phrases that are used exactly as often as they should be.

Download or read book Population Control written by Jen Rinaldi and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence is an inescapable through-line across the experiences of institutional residents regardless of facility type, historical period, regional location, government or staff in power, or type of population. Population Control explores the relational conditions that give rise to institutional violence – whether in residential schools, internment camps, or correctional or psychiatric facilities. This violence is not dependent on any particular space, but on underlying patterns of institutionalization that can spill over into community settings even as Canada closes many of its large-scale facilities. Contributors to the collection argue that there is a logic across community settings that claim to provide care for unruly populations: a logic of institutional violence, which involves a deep entanglement of both loathing and care. This loathing signals a devaluation of the institutionalized and leaves certain populations vulnerable to state intervention under the guise of care. When that offer of care is polluted by loathing, however, there comes along with it an unavoidable and socially prescribed violence. Offering a series of case studies in the Canadian context – from historical asylums and laundries for “fallen women” to contemporary prisons, group homes, and emergency shelters – Population Control understands institutional violence as a unique and predictable social phenomenon, and makes inroads toward preventing its reoccurrence.
