Book excerpt: I went to an ivy league university and have a masters in electrical engineering, I worked in the tech industry for almost 22 years and lost my job in early 2019. I lost everything through my struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. I finally reconnected with my family by begging my way to the Seattle area where I had a vague idea where my eldest sister lives. I found her and she and her husband heard my thoughts wit and stories and helped me write all this down by hand by providing notebooks i would return to them of safe keeping. I have been in Seattle (mainly in east side) for over three months and haven't slept inside once. I don't want pity I want people to appreciate my thoughts, wit and ideas. After I lost everything I have been happy and upbeat. This book will help anyone and make them smile and perhaps make their heart soar like 'mien' has.... I pray this book will put a roof over my head! If you like it please spread the word!

Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street. What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

Book The Antidote

  • Author : Oliver Burkeman
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2012-11-13
  • ISBN : 1429947608

Download or read book The Antidote written by Oliver Burkeman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-help books don't seem to work. Few of the many advantages of modern life seem capable of lifting our collective mood. Wealth—even if you can get it—doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. Romance, family life, and work often bring as much stress as joy. We can't even agree on what "happiness" means. So are we engaged in a futile pursuit? Or are we just going about it the wrong way? Looking both east and west, in bulletins from the past and from far afield, Oliver Burkeman introduces us to an unusual group of people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. Whether experimental psychologists, terrorism experts, Buddhists, hardheaded business consultants, Greek philosophers, or modern-day gurus, they argue that in our personal lives, and in society at large, it's our constant effort to be happy that is making us miserable. And that there is an alternative path to happiness and success that involves embracing failure, pessimism, insecurity, and uncertainty—the very things we spend our lives trying to avoid. Thought-provoking, counterintuitive, and ultimately uplifting, The Antidote is the intelligent person's guide to understanding the much-misunderstood idea of happiness.

Download or read book Uncommon Prose written by Dianne Claire Charpentier and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncommon Prose defined: Poems, Quotes, and Soul Antidotes is Diannes first book. It is a compilation of much of Diannes life lessons presented as poetry (uncommon prose). In this book, she offers her musings of this world through her honest eyes and pen. Also included are her own quoted observations as a co-participant in humankind. Lastly, her Soul Antidotes are written in the true form of prose. The themes of this book are life based right from the heart, as Dianne engages both common and uncommon prose for the art and pleasure of it. This writing endeavor has been instrumental as a means to decipher the deeper meanings in life, perhaps for many of us. It involves love, loss, friendship, faith, hope, and the expansion of soul. May it be both entertaining and enlightening to you and your life experience as you go along for the read. An excerpt from the book: I Feel; Therefore, I Know I Am And my pen wrote: Although the step before me is not yet known, I feel my feet on my path. I know I am on my path. I saw a mother holding her new baby in her arms; I felt love. Although I am neither mother nor baby, I feel love. I know love. I saw a man crying on the bus, so deep was his pain. I know not the source of his sorrow, yet I felt his pain. I know pain. Walking, I saw a tree dancing in the wind; it motioned, dance with me. I did not hear the invitation; I felt it. And together we danced. Are these mere memories or something deeper shared by all humankind in the kingdom outside the mind?

Now the world gets to rejoice in this compiled and curated collection of content from my Instagram. I included many contextually related pictures as well, although I put the main focus on my writings. Often philosophical or wise, sometimes funny or ironic, other times poetic or just unemotional, objective and informative. With mindfulness and self-awareness. Poems: This chapter is especially for you if you like words and stuff. Please note my crafty description, indicating I know a lot about these things. I promise the following content will be way more literary than this. Anecdotes: In this chapter, you can find short stories, opinions and anecdotes of mine. Also, quotes by other wise people and my opinion on them. The wide variety of topics ranges from seemingly superficial nonsense to indispensable wisdom. From a mindful appreciation of nature and gratitude to be alive to carefree existence and relishing the present moment. This and more coming up next. Enjoy! Antidotes: The antidote to not knowing something is learning it. Regardless of whether you have ever even asked yourself any of these questions, I will answer them. In this chapter, you can find interesting, funny, useful, useless, trivial, profound, and other facts about life, earth, the universe, flora and fauna, people, language, etymology and other stuff related to my Instagram posts' pictures and/or directly copied from their caption texts. Bonus: The origin of spreadfire What's the story behind the name? This is the origin story of spreadfire. It's mostly about the birth of the name and only tangential about the person behind the pseudonym. Fear not for the messiah has come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebecca Elson's A Responsibility to Awe reissued as a Carcanet Classic. A Responsibility to Awe is a contemporary classic, a book of poems and reflections by a scientist for whom poetry was a necessary aspect of research, crucial to understanding the world and her place in it, even as, having contracted terminal cancer, she confronted her early death. Rebecca Elson was an astronomer; her work took her to the boundary of the visible and measurable. 'Facts are only as interesting as the possibilities they open up to the imagination,' she wrote. Her poems, like her researches, build imaginative inferences and speculations, setting out from observation, undeterred by knowing how little we can know.
