Book excerpt: The NASA Microgravity Science and Applications Division (MSAD) sponsors the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) to support microgravity science experiments with microgravity acceleration measurements. In the past, SAMS was flown exclusively on the NASA Orbiters. MSAD is currently sponsoring science experiments participating in the Shuttle-Mir Science Program in cooperation with the Russians on the Mir space station. Included in the complement of MSAD experiments and equipment is a SAMS unit installed on the Mir space station. On 25 August 1994, the SAM unit was launched on a Russia Progress vehicle to the Mir space station. The SAMS unit will support science experiments from the U.S. and Russia in a manner similar to the Orbiter missions by measuring the microgravity environment during the experiment operations. In October 1994, the SAMS unit recorded data on Mir for over fifty-three hours in seven different time periods to survey possible locations for future experiments. The Mir acceleration data were examined by the Principal Investigator, Microgravity Services, to develop characteristics of the data. A report was previously written to quickly summarize the characteristics of the SAMS data from Mir. That report contained an overview of data from the 100 Hertz (Hz) SAMS sensor head. This report presents an overview of the data from the 10 Hz SAMS sensor head and additional information about crew and vehicle activities. Some additional observations are also made concerning the 100 Hz sensor head data. Appendix A describes the procedures to access SAMS data by file transfer protocol (ftp) utilizing the internet. Appendices B and C provide plots of the SAMS 10 Hz data for an overview of the microgravity environment at the times that data were recorded. Appendix D contains a user comment sheet. The data were recorded on twenty-seven optical disks which were returned to Earth on Orbiter missions STS-86, STS-89, and STS-91. During these increments, SAMS data were collected in the Priroda module to support various microgravity experiments. This report points out some of the salient features of the microgravity acceleration environment to which the experiments were exposed. Book excerpt: As part of the NASA/Mir Phase 1B Science Program, the ionizing radiation environment inside and outside the Russian Mir's Space Station was monitored using a combination of Thermoluminescent Detectors (TLD) and CR-39 Plastic Nuclear Track Detectors (PNTD). Radiation measurements inside the Mir station were carried out using six Area Passive Dosimeters (APD), four located inside the Mir Base Block and two located inside the Kvant 2 module, during the NASA-2/Mir-21, NASA-3/Mir-22 and NASA-4/Mir-23 missions. The radiation environment under low shielding was measured using an External Dosimeter Array (EDA) mounted on the outer surface of the Kvant 2 module. The external radiation environment and a location inside the Kvant 2 roughly corresponding to the location of the EDA were monitored for 130 days during the NASA- 4/Mir-23 and NASA-5/Mir-24 missions. Dose rates measured by APD TLDs ranged from 271 to 407 microGy/d during the NASA-2/Mir-21 mission, from 265 to 378 microGy/d during the NASA-3/Mir-22 mission, and from 287 to 421 microGy/d during the NASA-4/Mir-23 mission. APD PNTDs have been analyzed and LET spectra have been Cenerated for the five APDs exposed on the NASA-2/Mir-21 mission and for two APD PNTDs exposed on the NASA-3/Mir-22 mission. Dose equivalent rates on the NASA-2/Mir-21 mission ranged from 513 microSv/d in the Kvant 2 module to 710 microSv/d on the floor of the Base Block. Dose as a function of shielding depth in TLDs has been measured in the thin TLD stacks including in the EDA. EDA dose range from 72.5 Gy under 0.0146 g/sq cm to 0.093 Gy under 3.25 g/sq cm of shielding. Readout and analysis of the reaming PNTDs form the NASA-3/Mir-22 mission and PNTDs from the NASA-4/Mir-23 mission (including those from the EDA) is ongoing and will be completed during the final year of this experiment. Dose equivalent rates for the NASA-3/Mir-22 and NASA-4/Mir-23 APDs will then be determined and comparisons will be made with both model calculations and with result...

These are: The Mir base block, launched in 1986 The modules added to the base block in 1987, 1989, and 1990 The Soyuz-TM crew transports and Progress-M supply ships, which first appeared in 1986 and 1989, respectively. This work is divided into four parts. Part 1, "Soyuz," examines the Soyuz spacecraft and its derivatives, including those used in the abandoned manned lunar landing program. Part 2, "Almaz, Salyut, and Mir," looks at the Almaz and Long-Duration Orbital Station (Russians acronym DOS) space stations. Book excerpt: This summary report presents the results of the processed acceleration data measured aboard the Columbia orbiter during the STS-107 microgravity mission from January 16 to February 1, 2003. Two accelerometer systems were used to measure the acceleration levels due to vehicle and science operations activities that took place during the 16-day mission. Due to lack of precise timeline information regarding some payload's operations, not all of the activities were analyzed for this report. However, a general characterization of the microgravity environment of the Columbia Space Shuttle during the 16-day mission is presented followed by a more specific characterization of the environment for some designated payloads during their operations. Some specific quasi-steady and vibratory microgravity environment characterization analyses were performed for the following payloads: Structure of Flame Balls at Low Lewis-number-2, Laminar Soot Processes-2, Mechanics of Granular Materials-3 and Water Mist Fire-Suppression Experiment. The Physical Science Division of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sponsors the Orbital Acceleration Research Experiment and the Space Acceleration Measurement System for Free Flyer to support microgravity science experiments, which require microgravity acceleration measurements. On January 16, 2003, both the Orbital Acceleration Research Experiment and the Space Acceleration Measurement System for Free Flyer accelerometer systems were launched on the Columbia Space Transportation System-107 from the Kennedy Space Center. The Orbital Acceleration Research Experiment supported science experiments requiring quasi-steady acceleration measurements, while the Space Acceleration Measurement System for Free Flyer unit supported experiments requiring vibratory acceleration measurement.
