Download or read book Adivina qui n se esconde written by Sharon Gordon and published by Marshall Cavendish. This book was released on 2004 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first step on the road to literacy has been successfully taken, and now it is time to move on. Guess Who reinforces skills acquired in Just the Opposite and then playfully lures early readers to the next level of proficiency. Appealing to their natural curiosity, it asks children to decipher clues about a particular animal's physical characteristics, behavior, and habitat, and then challenges them to identify the animal in question. Though the text remains simple and strongly supported by images, vocabulary has become a bit more complex, sentences are longer, punctuation is more diverse, and repetition is less common. Without the student even being aware of it, learning to read has become even more of a rewarding adventure!

Download or read book Santa Teresa Being Some Account of Her Life and Times 2 Volumes written by Gabriela C. Graham and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-02-13 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We who, like Fray Luis de Leon, did not know the Mother Teresa on this earth, and can only judge of her by her works, may well wonder what manner of woman was the Castilian nun, whom even Voltaire praised, who exercised such an influence over Ferdinand de Toledo, the stern Duke of Alba, and the gloomy Philip II, and has so stamped herself into Castilian life, that to this day her votaries sign themselves 'su amigo Teresiano' in writing to one another. . . . The attempt of the author has been to paint Teresa de Ahumada the woman--as well as Teresa de Jesus the saint--to show why it was that she, from nothing, and with nothing but her own energy, was able to rescue the whole Order of Carmelites from the condition of apathy into which it had fallen. . . . [H]er life was one long journey; but from its starting-place in the windswept wall-girt town of Avila, to her last jornada from the Arrapil to Alba, she discovered what all saints do not, a never-ending fund of worldly wisdom, mixed with a vein of mysticism, about which she herself was never sure. --from the Preface

This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Scholarly Edition of Andrés de Li’s Thesoro de la passion (1494) is the first new edition of this early Castilian Passion text in five hundred years. Originally published in 1494 by the prolific Zaragozan printer Pablo Hurus, this beautifully illustrated devotional offers the modern reader a glimpse into the complex social world of late fifteenth-century Spain. Li’s converso identity permeates his retelling of the Passion through expositions on hypocrisy, anti-Semitism, and false faith. This new, modernized edition of the Thesoro de la passion dramatically illustrates the unique confluence of social, religious, and cultural forces present during the emergence of Spain’s national identity via analyses of the Thesoro’s Classical, Castilian, and Catalan sources, its importance as an early printed book, Li’s portrayal of the Virgin Mary, Christ, and the Passion events, and the importance of Li’s converso perspectives throughout the work.

Download or read book The Millst tter Exodus written by D. H. Green and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1966 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millstatter Exodus, a German epic of the twelfth century, is a poetic version of the opening chapters of the book of Exodus, treating the events of the early life of Moses and culminating in the crossing of the Red Sea and the destruction of the Hebrews' pagan enemies. In form it represents the second attempt at a biblical epic on the large scale after the revival of German vernacular literature in the late eleventh century. Professor Green analyses the Millstatter Exodus in form and in context. He compares it with its predecessor, the Wiener Genesis, and with its biblical source, throwing light on the early development of the German epic in the twelfth century and on the poetic intentions of the author of the Exodus. Professor Green believes that the Millstatter Exodus can best be understood allegorically against the background of the crusading movement, and he shows that it is one of the first literary attempts in Germany to come to terms with the crusades and the problem of Christian warfare.
Download or read book Au Naturel written by Lara Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary naturalism, within the Hispanic context, has traditionally been read as a graphic realist school or movement linked predominantly to late nineteenth century literary production. The essays in Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism—written by scholars from different generations, nationalities and ideological backgrounds—propose a major revisionist contribution to the study of Hispanic naturalism. Based on a theoretical proposal that re-semanticizes naturalismo as a diachronic counter-metanarrative phenomenon that transcends the chronological and geographic limitations imposed by traditional criticism on naturalism, the collection provides new readings of traditional naturalist fare as well as re-readings of works that have not been read, within the bounds of conventional criticism, as naturalist. Re-read within the proposed theoretical framework, its essays demonstrate the countless ways in which Hispanic naturalist texts–literary and more recently, filmic—continue to frankly engage the societal problematics that has impeded true social, political, economic and cultural progress from taking place in the Hispanic world from the turbulent fin-de-siècle period of the nineteenth century through the present day, globalized context. Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism is thus also an open invitation to the scholarly community to re-consider other socio-critical works within the Hispanic naturalist context that observe and reflection upon social issues that continue to plague Hispanic society today.
