Book Questions and Answers Covering the History of France and the Causes of the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Questions and Answers Covering the History of France and the Causes of the World War Classic Reprint written by James Brainerd Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions and Answers Covering the History of France and the Causes of the World War Although the present form of government in France, usually known as the Third Republic, was proclaimed on the downfall of Napoleon III, in September, 1870, and really began with the election to the presidency of Louis Adolph Thiers in August, 1871, it was not until 1875 that the present constitutional form of government was established and modifications to this constitutional law were made in 1879, 1884, 1885 and 1889. Under the constitution the legislative power is vested in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, and the executive power in the President of the Republic and the Cabinet or Ministry. The President of the Republic is elected for a term of seven years by an absolute majority of the votes of the National Assembly, composed of the two legislative chambers in joint session. There is no vice-president and, in the case of death, resignation, or removal of the president during his term of office, a new session of the National Assembly elects his successor for a full term of seven years. The president promulgates the laws passed by both chambers of the Congress and executes them. He appoints all civil and military officers, has the right of individual pardon, concludes treaties with foreign powers, but the approval of the legislature is necessary for any treaties which affect the area of France or of the French colonies; and the previous assent of both chambers is required to enable him to declare war. He can dissolve the Chamber of Deputies at any time by the consent of the Senate, thus requiring a new election for the lower house. Every act of the president requires countersigning by the proper minister in his Cabinet. The present President of the Republic (1917) is M. Raymond Poincare, born in 1858 and elected to the presidency January 17, 1913. The salary of the president is 600,000 francs (about $114,000) per annum, with an additional expense allowance of equal amount. Book What Is England Doing Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is England Doing Classic Reprint written by Alfred Noyes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is England Doing? This is the question about the war which one hears more frequently than almost any other in America. Frequently it implies a criticism; and, certainly till the last few months it implied a large measure of disappointment even among the warmest friends of England. The Germans have not missed the opportunity of encouraging the idea that in some mysterious way Great Britain has "lost prestige." They have been aided by the traditional British reticence, a reticence which nevertheless has its advantages; for, when results are achieved in silence, they are, in the end, doubly effective, effective in themselves, and deadly to the talkers. I have hoped to contribute something towards it by trying to eliminate worn-out dynastic traditions, old diplomatic formulae for so long accepted as international currency, the untruths and half truths of historical law, vague ideas about races and nationalities, inexact and deceptive catchwords, and to replace them by the solid conception, after the manner of Bentham, of a utilitarian policy. Book Command Of The Air

  • Author : General Giulio Douhet
  • Publisher : Pickle Partners Publishing
  • Release : 2014-08-15

Download or read book Command Of The Air written by General Giulio Douhet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.
