Selon les projections fournies par l'INSEE, ce phénomène ne va cesser de s'amplifier au cours des prochaines années. La proportion des personnes âgées de 80 ans et plus, dans la population française, devrait doubler entre 2010 et 2060 pour atteindre environ 8,4 millions de personnes. Sur cette même période, le nombre des personnes âgées dépendantes, passerait de 1150 000 personnes en 2010 à 1 550 000 en 2030, puis à 2 300 000 en 2060.Il paraît donc essentiel, du fait de cette démographie croissante, et du nombre de places limité en institutions, de trouver dès à présent un moyen efficace de prendre en charge ces personnes dépendantes. Pour les personnes concernées et leurs familles, la perte d'autonomie est difficile à vivre tant psychologiquement que financièrement. Le MAD apparaît comme une solution pour faire face à ce phénomène. Il est mieux vécu et accepté par la personne et son entourage qu'une hospitalisation ou un placement en institution et garantit une maîtrise des coûts de santé. Le MAD fait partie intégrante du métier de pharmacien, et la part de marché est importante. Depuis quelques années ce secteur d'activité est en pleine expansion et va encore se développer dans les années à venir.

Il a un rôle pivot et se doit donc de connaître les organismes et aides à la personne âgée existants afin d'orienter vers les professionnels compétents si nécessaire. Le pharmacien a toute sa place dans le collectif des professionnels de santé pour détecter les risques et améliorer la prise en charge autour du patient âgé.

Le MAD s’avère donc bénéfique pour le patient, mais aussi pour l’économie. Nous verrons aussi dans ce travail comment le pharmacien d’officine peut prendre place dans un réseau de santé, réseau dans lequel le malade est pris en charge de manière pluridisciplinaire.
