Key Concepts General relativity, developed by Albert Einstein, describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. It works extremely well at large scales, such as in predicting planetary orbits and the behavior of black holes. On the other hand, quantum mechanics deals with the fundamental behavior of particles at the smallest scales, such as atoms and subatomic particles. It incorporates principles like wave-particle duality, quantization, and uncertainty. The Need for Quantum Gravity Despite their success, general relativity and quantum mechanics are fundamentally incompatible. General relativity treats gravity as a smooth, continuous field, while quantum mechanics relies on quantized fields and inherently probabilistic events. When attempting to describe situations where both quantum effects and strong gravitational effects are significant, such as in the vicinity of black holes or during the Big Bang, the theories conflict. Quantum gravity aims to unify these two frameworks. Approaches to Quantum Gravity Several approaches have been proposed to formulate a theory of quantum gravity. String theory proposes that fundamental particles are not point-like but instead one-dimensional "strings" that vibrate at different frequencies. This theory inherently includes gravity and attempts to unify all fundamental forces. Loop quantum gravity (LQG) focuses on quantizing spacetime itself, positing that spacetime has a discrete structure at the smallest scales and attempts to describe the quantum properties of spacetime directly, without relying on a background. Causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) is a method of simulating quantum spacetime by breaking it down into discrete, simplicial building blocks, like triangles or tetrahedra, and studying how these blocks combine to form spacetime. Asymptotic safety aims to define a quantum theory of gravity that remains consistent and finite at all energy scales by identifying a fixed point in the theory's parameter space where the theory remains predictive and well-behaved.

It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in quantum field theory and high-energy physics. The first part of the book introduces quantum gravity, without requiring previous knowledge of general relativity (GR). The necessary geometrical aspects are derived afresh leading to explicit general Lagrangians for gravity, including that of general relativity. The quantum aspect of gravitation, as described by the graviton, is introduced and perturbative quantum GR is discussed. The Schwinger-DeWitt formalism is developed to compute the one-loop contribution to the theory and renormalizability aspects of the perturbative theory are also discussed. This follows by introducing only the very basics of a non-perturbative, background-independent, formulation of quantum gravity, referred to as “loop quantum gravity”, which gives rise to a quantization of space. In the second part the author introduces supersymmetry and its consequences. The generation of superfields is represented in detail. Supersymmetric generalizations of Maxwell’s Theory as well as of Yang-Mills field theory, and of the standard model are worked out. Spontaneous symmetry breaking, improvement of the divergence problem in supersymmetric field theory, and its role in the hierarchy problem are covered. The unification of the fundamental constants in a supersymmetric version of the standard model are then studied. Geometrical aspects necessary to study supergravity are developed culminating in the derivation of its full action. The third part introduces string theory and the analysis of the spectra of the mass (squared) operator associated with the oscillating strings. The properties of the underlying fields, associated with massless particles, encountered in string theory are studied in some detail. Elements of compactification, duality and D-branes are given, as well of the generation of vertices and interactions of strings. In the final sections, the author shows how to recover GR and the Yang-Mills field Theory from string theory.

Book excerpt: The proposed completion of QM theory, with the new non-probabilistic equations and a new mathematical basis for the deterministic quantum mechanics is presented here as a conservative extension of the Standard QM by 3-dimensional (of rest mass energy density) elementary particles. This theory can reshape our view of the quantum world, allowing us to include also classical gravity and to answer some of the deep unresolved questions at the heart of quantum mechanics. This new theory of particles is a constructive approach, alternative to the string theory. Thus, it avoids the infinitary problems of the inverse square for gravitational and electric forces, and may be used as a formal basis for Einsteins unification theory. This second volume is the continuation of Part I and is dedicated to its unification with General Relativity (GR) and with higher dimensions used for the particles properties, such as electrical charge, spin, colours, etc. In Chapter One, after a brief presentation of the main results obtained in Part I, the concepts of GR theory, tensors, and differential pseudo-Rimannian 4-dimensional time-space manifolds are gradually introduced sufficiently for a self-contained presentation and derivation of these new covariant equations. Then, the unification of this newly completed deterministic QM with the GR theory is provided . Chapter Two introduces and examines the extremely small, compacted higher dimensions in order to integrate the charge and spin properties of the elementary particles in a complete quantum physics theory for elementary particles. Chapter Three considers the higher dimensional wave packets of the particles and their reduction to the 4-dimensional time-space, and particles vector kets in the higher-dimensional manifold framework. These are composed of Minkowski time-space and new small, compacted dimensions: a spacelike extra dimension for the quantised spin vectors of the particles and time-like extra dimensions for the quantised charges. After that important properties of this QM theory are considered, the new quantum superposition for the states of a number of individual particles and ERP paradox (entanglement) are discussed.

In order to achieve this aim, in many lectures, seminars and discussions we have strengthened the interplay between gravity and quantum systems starting from the situation in the early universe based on astrophysical observations, up to the earthly based experiments with atom interferometry for probing the structure of space-time. Thus we have had timely lectures on the quantum field and horizon of a black hole including reviews of the problem of black holes thermodynamics and entropy, quantum information, quantum black holes, quantum evaporation and Hawking radiation, recent advances in stockastic gravity. We have also discussed quantum fluctuations in inflationary universe, quantum effects and reheating after inflation, and superplanckian energies in Hawking radiation. In this regard the subject of spinors in purely affine space-time and Dirac matter according to Weyl in the generalized theory of gravitation were developed . The dualism between space-time and matter has been deeply analyzed in order to see why, for general relativity, this is an obstacle for quantization of the theory. Also canonical Gravity and Mach's principle, torsion and curvature as commutator for Quantum Gravity and Dirac Geometry of real space-time were analysed, together with the problem of 5-Dimensional Projective Unified Field theory and Multidimensional Gravity and Cosmology.

Book excerpt: For several decades since its inception, Einstein's general theory of relativity stood somewhat aloof from the rest of physics. Paradoxically, the attributes which normally boost a physical theory - namely, its perfection as a theoreti cal framework and the extraordinary intellectual achievement underlying i- prevented the general theory from being assimilated in the mainstream of physics. It was as if theoreticians hesitated to tamper with something that is manifestly so beautiful. Happily, two developments in the 1970s have narrowed the gap. In 1974 Stephen Hawking arrived at the remarkable result that black holes radiate after all. And in the second half of the decade, particle physicists discovered that the only scenario for applying their grand unified theories was offered by the very early phase in the history of the Big Bang universe. In both cases, it was necessary to discuss the ideas of quantum field theory in the background of curved spacetime that is basic to general relativity. This is, however, only half the total story. If gravity is to be brought into the general fold of theoretical physics we have to know how to quantize it. To date this has proved a formidable task although most physicists would agree that, as in the case of grand unified theories, quantum gravity will have applications to cosmology, in the very early stages of the Big Bang universe. In fact, the present picture of the Big Bang universe necessarily forces us to think of quantum cosmology.
