Book Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera

Download or read book Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera written by Marcelle K. BouDagher-Fadel and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of fossil planktonic foraminifera as markers for biostratigraphical zonation and correlation underpins most drilling of marine sedimentary sequences and is key to hydrocarbon exploration. The first - and only - book to synthesise the whole biostratigraphic and geological usefulness of planktonic foraminifera, Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera unifies existing biostratigraphic schemes and provides an improved correlation reflecting regional biogeographies.Renowned micropaleontologist Marcelle K. Boudagher-Fadel presents a comprehensive analysis of existing data on fossil planktonic foraminifera genera and their phylogenetic evolution in time and space. This important text, now in its Second Edition, is in considerable demand and is now being republished by UCL Press.

Book Automated Stratigraphic Correlation

Download or read book Automated Stratigraphic Correlation written by F.P. Agterberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-04-26 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to recent developments in automated stratigraphic correlation of fossil data, using computer programs for ranking and scaling of stratigraphic events. Mainframes or microcomputers can be used to aid the stratigrapher during data inventory for a region or time period, for construction of a biozonation based on stratigraphic events, (such as the latest appearance datum of a fossil species), and for automated correlation. The book is intended for advanced geology students, research workers and teachers with a background in stratigraphy and an interest in using computer-based techniques for problem-solving.

Book Geomathematics Theoretical Foundations Applications and Future Developments

Download or read book Geomathematics Theoretical Foundations Applications and Future Developments written by Frits Agterberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wealth of geomathematical case history studies performed by the author during his career at the Ministry of Natural Resources Canada, Geological Survey of Canada (NRCan-GSC). Several of the techniques newly developed by the author and colleagues that are described in this book have become widely adopted, not only for further research by geomathematical colleagues, but by government organizations and industry worldwide. These include Weights-of-Evidence modelling, mineral resource estimation technology, trend surface analysis, automatic stratigraphic correlation and nonlinear geochemical exploration methods. The author has developed maximum likelihood methodology and spline-fitting techniques for the construction of the international numerical geologic timescale. He has introduced the application of new theory of fractals and multi fractals in the geostatistical evaluation of regional mineral resources and ore reserves and to study the spatial distribution of metals in rocks. The book also contains sections deemed important by the author but that have not been widely adopted because they require further research. These include the geometry of preferred orientations of contours and edge effects on maps, time series analysis of Quaternary retreating ice sheet related sedimentary data, estimation of first and last appearances of fossil taxa from frequency distributions of their observed first and last occurrences, tectonic reactivation along pre-existing schistosity planes in fold belts, use of the grouped jackknife method for bias reduction in geometrical extrapolations and new applications of the theory of permanent, volume-independent frequency distributions.

Book Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera

Download or read book Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera written by Marcelle K. BouDagher-Fadel and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foraminifera are free-living protozoa that grow an elaborate, solid calcite skeleton. Their well-marked evolutionary record makes them of outstanding value in zonal stratigraphy. The role of fossil planktonic foraminifera as markers for biostratigraphical zonation and correlation underpins most drilling of marine sedimentary sequences and is key to hydrocarbon exploration. Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera presents a comprehensive analysis of existing data on fossil planktonic foraminifera genera and their phylogenetic evolution in time and space. In addition, the book contains new, unpublished data on carbonate thin sections with identified fossil planktonic foraminifera from the Far East to offshore Brazil and South Africa.
