Book Guide to Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Guide to Wireless Ad Hoc Networks written by Sudip Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The past few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless ad hoc networks. The attractiveness of ad hoc networks, in general, is attributed to their characteristics/features such as ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-configure without the involvement of a centralized n- work manager, router, access point or a switch. These features help to set up a network fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a fixed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief operations. Even though ad hoc networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to scalability, quality-of-service, energy efficiency and security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a lot of work has been done in an effort to incorporate Swarm Intelligence (SI) techniques in building an adaptive routing protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Since centralized approach for routing in MANETs generally lacks in scalability and fault-tolerance, SI techniques provide a natural solution through a distributed approach for the adaptive routing for MANETs. In SI techniques, the captivating features of insects or mammals are correlated with the real world problems to find solutions. Recently, several applications of bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms in telecommunications and computer networks have achieved remarkable success. The main aims/objectives of this book, "Mobile Ad Hoc Networks: Bio-Inspired Quality of Service Aware Routing Protocols", are twofold; firstly it clearly distinguishes between principles of traditional routing protocols and SI based routing protocols, while explaining in detail the analogy between MANETs and SI principles. Secondly, it presents the readers with important Quality of Service (QoS) parameters and explains how SI based routing protocols achieves QoS demands of the applications. This book also gives quantitative and qualitative analysis of some of the SI based routing protocols for MANETs.

Book Protocols for Supporting Quality of Service in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Protocols for Supporting Quality of Service in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks written by Lei Chen and published by . This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are self-organizing, infrastructureless networks that provide flexibility and convenience in setting up a dynamic network. Since the 1970's, MANETs have attracted a great deal of research aimed at improving their basic performance. However, with the development of real-time applications, incorporating Quality of Service (QoS) into the network architecture becomes essential. Supporting QoS in MANETs necessitates more harmonious collaboration among all network layers, requiring a design that supports cross-layer interactions rather than a traditional independent layered network architecture. The work described in this book enables this goal by proposing a general architecture that supports cross-layer interactions, as well as by designing protocols at several layers of the stack that can exploit this cross-layer information to improve the QoS performance. This book is addressed to professionals in wireless networks, especially those interested in protocol design for supporting QoS in MANETs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advances in wireless technologies and development of mobile devices, Mobile Ad hoc Networks have emerged as the milestone and play an important role in establishing communication using no fixed infrastructure. Nodes are free to move randomly and communicate with each other through single hop if within transmission range or through multiple hop beyond transmission range. Due to unpredictable behavior of such networks, it is difficult to maintain the required Quality of Service (QoS). QoS in MANETs refers to the provision of guaranteed services on the network layer, defined in the performance metrics between application and service provider. The first important task in QoS network routing is to find a feasible route through the network between source and destination. This route should satisfy all the requirements to fulfill the QoS constraints for the desired service. The focus of the book throughout has been on the study and development of QoS constrained routing protocols to ensure better QoS provisioning.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Quality of Service Support in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks'' Submitted by Shao Wenjian for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 In this thesis, we investigate the quality of service (QoS) routing and media access mechanisms for mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). Our work is treated from two perspectives: TDMA-based MANET and contention-based MANET. For TDMA-based systems, it is possible to achieve end-to-end QoS through resource reservation, as the integrated services (IntServ) QoS paradigm. In previous approaches, the time slot reservation scheme led to the shortcut collision problem. In this thesis, we use the contention graph to clearly identify the shortcut collision problem, and propose a distributed end-to-end time slot reservation algorithm to solve this problem. Performance evaluation shows that our algorithm can achieve performance close to the theoretical upper bound, but with much lower complexity. Based on the reservation algorithm, we propose a QoS routing protocol in TDMA-based MANET. The purpose of our research is to enhance the reliability of the routes. Multiple paths are set up between the two communication terminals, and created in a sequential manner, to avoid the link collisions along the paths when they are reserved simultaneously. Erasure coding is used to further improve the link reliability. With the help of erasure coding, the destination can still receive the data even when some paths break down during the transmission. Implementing IntServ in TDMA-based systems usually involves high signaling overheads and complexity. The resources, once reserved, cannot be re-allocated to other connections even if they are not actually used. A more flexible way is to differentiate the traffic of different services, and this model corresponds to differentiated services (Di ffServ) in QoS . To support DifPServ in contention-based MANET, we research the media access scheme with power control. Previous studies have shown that system capacity can be increased through power control. However, this severely penalizes the nodes that are far apart, making it difficult for them to reach each other. In our research, we devise a busy tone based approach, through which a node can announce media access requests. Nodes overhearing the announcement will then refi-ain from transmission. If a node fails to access the channel several times, the node can utilize the busy tone for the purpose of quick channel access. In this way, the unfairness problem for the power-controlled protocols can be greatly alleviated. As an alternative, we apply the busy tone based quick channel access scheme to DifPServ in contention-based MANET. A high priority node is allowed to use achieve the busy tone channel with fewer channel access failures, while a low priority node can use it after more channel access failures. In this way, the high priority nodes can achieve better performance in terms of throughput, delay, loss rate and fairness than the lower priority ones. More importantly, we integrate in-station access categories (AC) into our protocols, enabling a station to support different classes of traffic to meet the different QoS requirements of the users.
