Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopathic Disorders and their Assessment considers the diverse views and significant developments in understanding psychopathic disorders. The subsequent chapters are concerned with the methods of disposal of a psychopath under English law, the safeguards available both to the individual and to society within and without the Mental Health Act, and the extent to which this disposal mechanism was used. These topics are followed by discussions on the causation of psychopathic disorder; the electroencephalographic and psychological techniques for the disorder evaluation; and various methods of patient care. The last chapters consider the law and practice relating to psychopathic disorder and British facilities for the treatment of psychopaths. This book is of value to psychologists and psychiatrists.

Book Personality Tests and Assessments Psychology Revivals

Download or read book Personality Tests and Assessments Psychology Revivals written by Philip E. Vernon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1953 this book provided the first comprehensive account of methods of personality assessment by a British author. It starts with a short survey of personality theory, pointing out the difficulties in any method of testing or assessment. Next it describes the weaknesses of the common interview method. (Throughout the emphasis is on methods which are usable in educational or vocational guidance and selection, not on methods which are mainly of scientific interest.) Thereafter it takes up each main type of technique – tests based on physique or psychological measures, on expressive movement such as gestures and handwriting, tests of behaviour (including War Office Selection Board ‘house party’ methods), ratings and rating scales, questionnaires, and so-called projective techniques. The evidence for or against each test or method is surveyed and numerous references provided for relevant literature. Illustrative excerpts are given of many of the more promising tests, and some pictorial illustrations. British work in this field at the time is covered completely, and an attempt is made to provide a fair summary of the main contributions of American and other psychologists of the day.

  • Author : Walter Sinnott-Armstrong
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 0262195690

Download or read book Moral Psychology written by Walter Sinnott-Armstrong and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the twentieth century, philosophy and science went their separate ways. In moral philosophy, fear of the so-called naturalistic fallacy kept moral philosophers from incorporating developments in biology and psychology. Since the 1990s, however, many philosophers have drawn on recent advances in cognitive psychology, brain science, and evolutionary psychology to inform their work. This collaborative trend is especially strong in moral philosophy, and these three volumes bring together some of the most innovative work by both philosophers and psychologists in this emerging interdisciplinary field. The contributors to volume 2 discuss recent empirical research that uses the diverse methods of cognitive science to investigate moral judgments, emotions, and actions. Each chapter includes an essay, comments on the essay by other scholars, and a reply by the author(s) of the original essay. Topics include moral intuitions as a kind of fast and frugal heuristics, framing effects in moral judgments, an analogy between Chomsky's universal grammar and moral principles, the role of emotions in moral beliefs, moral disagreements, the semantics of moral language, and moral responsibility. Contributors to Volume 2: Fredrik Bjorklund, James Blair, Paul Bloomfield, Fiery Cushman, Justin D'Arms, John Deigh, John Doris, Julia Driver, Ben Fraser, Gerd Gigerenzer, Michael Gill, Jonathan Haidt, Marc Hauser, Daniel Jacobson, Joshua Knobe, Brian Leiter, Don Loeb, Ron Mallon, Darcia Narvaez, Shaun Nichols, Alexandra Plakias, Jesse Prinz, Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, Russ Shafer-Landau, Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Cass Sunstein, William Tolhurst, Liane Young

Book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-18 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major purpose of this handbook is to provide a comprehensive review of current clinical descriptions, research, and theories of psychopathology. Descrip tive psychopathology is a field that is the foundation of clinical practice and re search in clinical psychology, psychiatry, psychiatric social work, psychiatric nursing, and allied professions in mental health. Psychopathology is often per ceived as "a stepchild" of the more glamorous areas of diagnosis or assessment and therapy or behavioral change. Nevertheless, it is doubtful that any meaningful advancements in these areas will occur until there is a thorough understanding of the behavioral disorders. The purpose of the present project was to devise a handbook that covered both general and specific topics in psychopathology and that would be useful to re searchers, practitioners, and graduate or other advanced students in the mental health professions. In order to implement this plan, we selected very carefully colleagues whom we respect for their expertise in particular fields. These include both clinicians and researchers with outstanding national reputations, as well as more junior behavioral scientists and clinicians who, in our opinion, will achieve similar recognition in the future. The chapters in this book lead us to believe that we have chosen wisely. We would like to express our appreciation to these authors for their outstanding contributions and cooperation.
