Book excerpt: Pyrethrum: the Natural Insecticide covers the papers presented at the 1972 ""International Symposium on Recent Advances with Pyrethrum the Natural Insecticide"" held in conjunction with the American Institute of Biological Sciences Silver Anniversary Meeting at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. It deals with all aspects of pyrethrum, including its history, production, chemistry, biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, and agricultural applications. The introductory part addresses the early history of pyrethrum, its recognition as a modern insecticide, and its worldwide production. The chemistry and biochemistry parts discuss the composition, isolation, structure, synthesis, biosynthesis, metabolism, and action on enzyme systems of natural pyrethrins extracted from pyrethrum flower. The book also examines the toxicology of pyrethrum and its constituents to mammals, fish, and wildlife, as well as tests for possible teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and allergenic activities. Finally, it discusses the domestic and agricultural applications of pyrethrum. Considering its desirable features, researchers find pyrethrum unsurpassed by any type of synthetic organic insecticide and even by the best synthetic analogs or pyrethroids.

Book Pyrethrum Flowers

Download or read book Pyrethrum Flowers written by John E. Casida and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 160 years, pyrethrum has been safely and effectively used as a pesticide the world over. The flowers of this daisy, which contain a mixture of pleasant-smelling esters called the pyrethrins, have highly unusual insecticidal properties. Unique in their ability to repel most insect pests while posing virtually no threat to the environment, pyrethrins have been the subject of great interest to a wide variety of scientists. This book presents for the first time in over twenty years an in-depth look at the many issues surrounding the use of pyrethrins. John E. Casida, a world-renowned authority on the subject, has assembled a group of distinguished contributors to discuss topics ranging from the relationship between pyrethrum and synthetic pyrethroids to cultivation to metabolism to mammalian and environmental toxicology. Along the way, the history of pyrethrum flowers and pyrethrins, the chemistry of active pyrethrin ingredients, the mode of action and resistance, the control of pests, and residues and tolerances are also expertly treated. As safety aspects of pesticides are reevaluated with regard to current regulatory, social, and political implications, pyrethrum has increasingly been seen as the prototype for safe, natural pesticides. Engaging and profusely illustrated, Pyrethrum Flowers is the perfect introduction to the most important natural botanical pesticide. It will appeal to all scientists concerned with pesticides, including botanists, geneticists, biochemists, entomologists, and ecologists.

Book Toxicological profile for pyrethrins and pyrethroids

Download or read book Toxicological profile for pyrethrins and pyrethroids written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ATSDR toxicological profile succinctly characterizes the toxicology and adverse health effects information for the toxic substance described therein. Each peer-reviewed profile identifies and reviews the key literature that describes a substance's toxicological properties. This public health statement tells you about pyrethrins and pyrethroids and the effects of exposure. Pyrethrum is a naturally occurring mixture of chemicals found in certain chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethrum was first recognized as having insecticidal properties around 1800 in Asiaand was used to kill ticks and various insects such as fleas and mosquitos.

Book excerpt: Volume 12 is devoted to current and future approaches to insect management and control. The topics discussed cover chemical control, including the use of juvenile hormone analogs, microbiological methods, including viral and fungal agents, biological control, and genetic approaches to insect control. The 20 chapters, all amply referenced and illustrated, well demonstrate the multidisciplinary nature of the subject and the degree of international effort that has led to the present state of knowledge. Fifteen of the chapters are devoted to the action of insecticides, reflecting the immensity of the subject. The past 30 years have witnessed remarkable advances in the scientific basis of insect control and this volume provides a convenient point of entry into the massive amount of literature now available.

Book Primary and Secondary Metabolism of Plant Cell Cultures

Download or read book Primary and Secondary Metabolism of Plant Cell Cultures written by Karl-Hermann Neumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It must have been some feeling of frustration invoked by the genus loci of big conferences which brought Don Dougall, Mike Fowler, and me over a cup of coffee to think of organizing a small meeting on cell culture metabol ism. The basic aim was to bring people working on "primary metabolism" and those who work on "secondary metabolism" to interact with each other, hopefully to induce some new approaches to utilize the cell culture technique more efficiently in basic research and in its practical application. The out come of this was the small symposium at SchloE Rauischholzhausen near GieEen (Germany), and the reader of this small volume of articles on topics discussed will judge to what extent this aim was realized. Although F.e. Steward was unable to attend the meeting, we were happy that he contributed a review on some important turning points of the cell culture method in the past, and at the end of the book some participants of the meeting attempted some prognosis on possible future developments, summarized by Mike Fowler. It was the wish of our publisher to organize the contributions as a summary of the major topics of research of the individual groups represented at the meeting. Due to this, some readers will certainly feel that important areas of research in the cell culture field are missing. This is regrettable, but space had to be limited to keep this volume at a reasonable price.

Book Residue Reviews R ckstandsberichte

Download or read book Residue Reviews R ckstandsberichte written by Francis A. Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That residues of pesticide and other "foreign" chemicals in food stuffs are of concern to everyone everywhere is amply attested by the reception accorded previous volumes of "Residue Reviews" and by the gratifying enthusiasm, sincerity, and efforts shown by all the in dividuals from whom manuscripts have been solicited. Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food-additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manufacture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those that persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established ones are continually being dis placed by newly developed ones more acceptable to food tech nologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-control requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of governmental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of these chemicals per sisting into our foodstuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judgments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biologrcal, chemical, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxicological disciplines.
