At the time, the loss of Midnight was a horrible thing to us, but we grew from it. As farm kids, loss of life was something we had to deal with regularly because we had lots of animals. Therefore, I think farm kids get prepared for loss and real-life experiences pretty young. Doug was no exception. Doug actually had very bad luck with pets, but he never gave up. He learned his capacity to love was great, and his heart was meant for many. It also helped me to realize what great parents we had to help us through these events. If we take the chance to love, we are going to experience loss--they go hand in hand.
