Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American past of transcendentalism, utilitarianism, utopianism, and spiritual freedom here has its necessary counter or complement in this corporal history of early America providing "the historical importance of sentience and materiality in early American societies.. ." While the materialism of early Americans may be less than revelatory in an age of slavery, tribal genocide, and the more or less extreme proscription of women's activity, the approach is nonetheless useful to detail the interactions between, and conceptions about, bodies classified as white, black, red, male and female. Contributors, primarily professors of history, American studies, English, and religious studies, utilize the founding body (of) theories of Foucault, Mary Douglas, Elaine Scarry, Judith Butler, and Helene Cixous to examine American materialism from 1600-1830, primarily east of the Mississippi. c. Download or read book The Chicago Board of Trade Battery in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1862, the directors of the Chicago Board of Trade used their significant influence to organize perhaps the most prominent Union artillery unit in the Western Theater. Enlistees were Chicagoans, mainly clerks. During the Civil War, the battery was involved in 11 major battles, 26 minor battles and 42 skirmishes. They held the center at Stones River, repulsing a furious Confederate attack. A few days later, they joined 50 other Union guns in stopping one of the most dramatic offensives in the Western Theater. With Colonel Robert Minty's cavalry, they resisted an overwhelming assault along Chickamauga Creek. This history chronicles the actions of the Chicago Board of Trade Independent Light Artillery at the battles of Farmington, Dallas, Noonday Creek, Atlanta, in Kilpatrick's Raid, and at Nashville, and Selma.

Download or read book Voices Waiting to Be Heard written by Stephen Darley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lengthy eyewitness accounts of events in the Revolutionary War are rare. The expedition to Quebec led by Benedict Arnold is an exception with 35 such accounts. In this book, Stephen Darley has compiled 13 unknown journals and 6 pension applications written by men who were participants on that famous march. These accounts provide details of the trek through the untamed wilderness of Maine and Canada, the New Years Eve assault on Quebec and being held as prisoners in Quebec. These personal narratives present the extreme hard ships and difficulties each writer experienced being part of a unique and historic march from Cambridge to make Canada the 14th American Colony and deprive the British of its North American base of operations. One historian concludes that “the march of Hannibal over the Alps has nothing in it of superior merit to the March of Arnold.’” he goes on to conclude that the men who were on the march have “been left an heir to oblivion, almost unwept, unhonored and sung only in a minor key.” This book will help to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by its participants.
