Book excerpt: Dating violence is a prominent problem among college students that can result in harmful physical and mental health outcomes. To date, much research has focused on risk factors, but less is known about protective factors that may decrease the likelihood of dating violence. As such, the current paper examines protective factors (e.g. religion, positive parental relationships) against perpetrating and/or experiencing dating violence and whether these protective factors operate similarly for both perpetration and victimization. Data were gathered in 2013-2014 at two large public universities using pencil and paper surveys (N = 1482). Bivariate results revealed that women have more protective factors than men. Multivariate results showed that religious attendance, lower entitlement, more positive maternal relationship quality, and having more close friends with lower rates of drinking were all protective against dating violence perpetration and victimization. Additionally, lower respondent drinking was also protective against both dating violence perpetration and victimization. These findings highlight the importance of positive friendships as protective factors against dating violence victimization and perpetration. Finally, current study findings also emphasize that abstaining from alcohol is protective against dating violence victimization and perpetration.

While past studies have used multiple theories to explain risks for dating violence perpetration and victimization, the literature on dating violence remains disjointed, using only one or two theoretical perspectives in their models of dating violence. In this study, I examine dating violence perpetration and victimization from four key theoretical perspectives: the background-situational model of dating violence, social learning theory, attachment theory, and the antisocial orientation perspective. Analyses demonstrated that elements of all four theoretical perspectives were associated with dating violence perpetration and victimization. In addition, religiosity and maternal relationship quality were important protective factors against dating violence. Implications of the study findings on practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a common problem among adolescents, yet little is known about the risk markers for TDV perpetration and victimization. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore the relationship between family-of-origin factors (i.e., attachment, witnessing inter-parental violence, experiencing abuse as a child, poor parenting, and parental support) and TDV victimization and perpetration. A total of 27 studies, which yielded 81 effect sizes examining physical TDV perpetration and victimization, were included in the study. Results from our analysis revealed that anxious attachment was the strongest risk marker for TDV perpetration and experiencing abuse as a child was the strongest risk marker for TDV victimization. Our results also revealed that witnessing inter-parental violence was a significant risk marker for TDV perpetration and victimization, poor parenting was a significant risk marker for TDV victimization, avoidant attachment and experiencing abuse as a child were significant risk markers for perpetration, and parental support was a significant protective marker against TDV victimization. These findings highlight the importance of family factors when identifying adolescents who are at risk for TDV, as well as developing violence prevention and intervention programs.

These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

Recently, there has been an increase in research focused on identifying risk and protective factors for dating violence across the individual-, relationship-, community-, and societal-levels, yet studies exploring associations between parent-child relationships and dating violence have been lacking. The present study examined the associations between the perceived quality of mother-child relationships and father-child relationships and dating violence victimization and perpetration experiences among a sample of emerging adults. A cross-sectional sample of 454 undergraduate men and women from three universities were assessed at one time point via an online survey that employed empirically valid and reliable measures of parent-child relationship quality and past year dating violence experiences. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the relationship between these variables and included gender, country of birth, and sexual orientation as covariates in the models. Results indicated that individuals who reported higher quality relationships with their mothers and fathers had fewer victimization and perpetration experiences. There were significant differences on dating violence perpetration experiences by gender, with women reporting higher means for psychological aggression only. Individuals born in the USA reported higher victimization and perpetration experiences, specifically psychological aggression and physical assault, than those who identified as foreign-born. Similar trends were found for those who identified with a sexual orientation other than heterosexual. Differences in dating violence experiences between subgroups are explained in detail. Limitations as well as implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed.

Several risk factors have been identified that are associated with an increased risk of female-perpetrated dating violence, including a history of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse in childhood. Moreover, some research suggests that childhood abuse increases difficulties in emotion regulation, and these difficulties may be associated with a higher risk of perpetrating dating violence. Lastly, alcohol use and women’s psychological, physical, and sexual dating violence victimization in adulthood are consistent predictors of women’s dating violence perpetration.
