Book Global Thinking and Local Action

Download or read book Global Thinking and Local Action written by Uwem E. Ite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Based on extensive local field research undertaken in and around the Cross River National Park in Nigeria, this book provides a socio-economic study of the tensions between agriculture and nature conservation. Taking a ’bottom-up’ approach and focussing on the farm household and the dynamics of forest farming at household level, it brings together a wealth of new information on the subject of tropical forestry, the causes and dynamics of tropical rain forest loss and the problematic relations between conservation authorities in National Parks and local people. Its conclusions raise important questions about practical ways forward in the development of such areas.

Book Modeling land use sustainability in Fiji Islands

Download or read book Modeling land use sustainability in Fiji Islands written by David Lopez Cornelio and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Fiji National University (College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Fiji National University), language: English, abstract: Fiji Islands are among the most dynamic economies in the South Pacific, with rapid changes on infrastructure and industrial developments, tourism and commercial agriculture; even though they often come alongside environmental impacts on endemic biota and ecosystems that are not well understood, not much is invested on research to plan a sustainable use of land. Parallel unsolved concerns are land tenure issues in which ancestral community ownership coexists with modern markets; tensions over land leases between ethnical groups and high population growth trigger land use intensification, and rise of emigrations, of landlessness, of unemployment and finally of poverty. Therefore, it is of a national interest to asses these trends for long term sustainable land use planning; even nearly 3500 years ago a record of regulations aimed to achieve sustainability and equality: “3 ...for six years you may plant crops inyour fields, prune your vineyards, and gather what they produce. 4 But during the seventh year, you must let the land rest. 8 Count seven of these years seven times for a total of 49 years... during that time there will be seven ·years of rest 9 and proclaim liberty to everyone living in the land... everyone is to return to their own property” (Leviticus 25). In this document, the first chapter is a synopsis of land use in the rural areas of Fiji islands, its evolution, types, problems and alternatives, the second chapter is a review of some common free gis packages available in the internet useful for forestry and land use evaluations, their number and degrees of sophistication are ever growing; the last two chapters are applications, first on detecting the severity of land use intensity in relation to other socioeconomic parameters, and second on the planning of the best places for planting trees of economic or ecological importance. The articles were presented at international conferences, they are in no way a comprehensive treatise on the subject; my main purpose is to ignite the interest of students and staff working in the forestry field to try on and propose projects of various types, scales and complexity, with just a standard PC and access to internet and library resources.

Book Promoting Sustainable Agriculture and Agroforestry to Replace Unproductive Land use in Fiji and Vanuatu

Download or read book Promoting Sustainable Agriculture and Agroforestry to Replace Unproductive Land use in Fiji and Vanuatu written by Saiful Kamin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The many benefits of agroforestry have been widely identified, yet the area under agroforestry in Fiji and Vanuatu has in fact declined in recent decades, for example due to a push for growing export products during the colonial era, and the progressive urbanization of the population. While sugarcane growing and coconut production remain highly important land uses and sources of revenue in Fiji and Vanuatu respectively, there is considerable underutilized land in both countries. There is major scope for expansion of agroforestry, to produce timber as well as fruit and nuts from traditional tree species, with root crops and other vegetable species as intercrops. Expansion of planting could take place on sloping land and with little competition with agricultural production including sugarcane growing. This SRA was designed to explore the financial, legal, planning and policy issues associated with transitioning to sustainable agroforestry in senile coconut plantations and marginal sugarcane lands in Fiji and Vanuatu. The project sites selected were north-western Viti Levu in Fiji and the island of Efate in Vanuatu. An appraisal of current land-use policies and practices and their limitations was undertaken, with a view to identifying potential strategies to create greater incentives for more profitable and sustainable land-use systems and farming practices in the identified study areas"--Website.
