Book excerpt: They thought it was safe to lose their hearts. But the past is a dangerous stalker.A smart SEAL knows when it's time to pack it in. After 12 years on the teams, and a horrific mission that stretched him to the breaking point, Steve "Smoke" Tannen is transitioning to civilian life and a new job helping other vets who've forgotten how to see the world in shades of grey. One spot of color is his pretty next-door neighbor. Delicate features, chestnut hair--and a fight-or-flight wariness in her grey-green eyes that triggers his protective instincts. Samantha Applehoff would be laser focused on her goal of owning a coffee and bake shop--if she wasn't always looking over her shoulder. She can't shake the feeling she's being watched, and now a secret admirer's leaving gifts in her locked apartment. To make matters worse, she's not sure if her eerily quiet, unfailingly courteous, undeniably hot new neighbor is making her less anxious... or more. The attraction is instant and their connection is real. But when Sam's fears strike in real life, Smoke has only one shot to save her. And it could cost them their own happy ending.

Book excerpt: Human health depends on the health of the planet. Earth’s natural systems—the air, the water, the biodiversity, the climate—are our life support systems. Yet climate change, biodiversity loss, scarcity of land and freshwater, pollution and other threats are degrading these systems. The emerging field of planetary health aims to understand how these changes threaten our health and how to protect ourselves and the rest of the biosphere. Planetary Health: Protecting Nature to Protect Ourselves provides a readable introduction to this new paradigm. With an interdisciplinary approach, the book addresses a wide range of health impacts felt in the Anthropocene, including food and nutrition, infectious disease, non-communicable disease, dislocation and conflict, and mental health. It also presents strategies to combat environmental changes and its ill-effects, such as controlling toxic exposures, investing in clean energy, improving urban design, and more. Chapters are authored by widely recognized experts. The result is a comprehensive and optimistic overview of a growing field that is being adopted by researchers and universities around the world. Students of public health will gain a solid grounding in the new challenges their profession must confront, while those in the environmental sciences, agriculture, the design professions, and other fields will become familiar with the human consequences of planetary changes. Understanding how our changing environment affects our health is increasingly critical to a variety of disciplines and professions. Planetary Health is the definitive guide to this vital field.

Book Slingin Sam

Download or read book Slingin Sam written by Joe Holley and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Jenkins calls him “the greatest quarterback who ever lived, college or pro.” Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, who played for TCU and the Washington Redskins, single-handedly revolutionized the game of football. While the pros still wore leather helmets and played the game more like rugby, Baugh’s ability to throw the ball with rifle-like accuracy made the forward pass a strategic weapon, not a desperation heave. Like Babe Ruth, who changed the very perception of how baseball is played, Slingin’ Sam transformed the notion of offense in football and how much yardage can be gained through the air. As the first modern quarterback, Baugh led the Redskins to five title games and two NFL championships, while leading the league in passing six times—a record that endures to this day—and in punting four times. In 1943, the triple-threat Baugh also scored a triple crown when he led the league in passing, punting, and interceptions. Slingin’ Sam is the first major biography of this legendary quarterback, one of the first inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Joe Holley traces the whole arc of Baugh’s life (1914–2008), from his small-town Texas roots to his college ball success as an All-American at TCU, his brief flirtation with professional baseball, and his stellar career with the Washington Redskins (1937–1952), as well as his later career coaching the New York Titans and Houston Oilers and ranching in West Texas. Through Holley’s vivid descriptions of close-fought games, Baugh comes alive both as the consummate all-around athlete who could play every minute of every game, on both offense and defense, and as an all-around good guy.

Book I Will Protect Her

Download or read book I Will Protect Her written by I.R. Dujon and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of this autobiography shows I.R. Dujon at the time of publication mothering her younger, 6-year-old self. I Will Protect Her details the adolescent years in which Ingrid was subject to tragic child abuse, while the people in charge of her welfare and safety neglected their most basic responsibilities at every point possible. This led to a prolonged period of suffering for her and for so many others. After years of fighting, a full criminal investigation into the crimes was relaunched. Victims were able finally to expose the police and local authorities for their systematic failure to recognise, report, and act upon avoidable and life-altering abuse. The collation of notes, factual evidence, dates and times as recorded by herself and supported by many others affected, led to the prosecution of one of London’s most notorious paedophiles, who was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison. Only now, after years of counselling, therapy, and personal development, Ingrid has managed to finally close this chapter of her life for good. Today Dujon is a proud mother of five children, all now adults. Dujon’s goal is to share her story and inspire any and everyone who has ever been subject to any form of abuse. Ingrid hopes to educate a wider audience who may not be familiar with the patterns and signs of child abuse, and to paint a detailed picture of how people who are external to an abusive situation can still do so much to prevent or change things for the better.

I’m far from it. My family has been hunting bloodsuckers for centuries. So it comes as a horrifying shock when my aunt catches me licking blood off a knife like its cake batter. Panicking, she calls Sam Mason. Little does she know that dangling me like a carrot to the cocky Vampire Navy SEAL has consequences. If my uncle finds him on his property, he’ll burn Sam alive. Now instead of killing vampires, I’m rushing to save one. I pray I can’t get there in time. Otherwise, my family will suffer a fate worse than death. The Union Since I slept with a vampire, my family thinks I’ve committed a sacrilege, and they want to lock me away. It’s not me the Aberdeens should worry about but the powerful Vampire Navy SEAL Sam Mason. Beneath Sam’s boyish charm lies a predator, a ticking time bomb ready to destroy anyone who dares to mess with him or those he cares about, especially me. Yet he hasn’t met my human grandmother. She’s sweet with a dash of salt and a sprinkle of acid to complement her personality. It’s a lethal combination that will burn the toughest of adversaries right down to the bone. Nothing will stop her hunger for control and power and to lead a genetically altered army of supernatural killers with me as her lieutenant. A family war is brewing between the Aberdeens and Masons, and now I must choose sides. Sam and Layla Box Set includes the first three full-length novels of a seven book series. This collection has eight hundred pages in this enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance. Book Uncle Sam s Plantation

Download or read book Uncle Sam s Plantation written by Star Parker and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Sam’s Plantation is an incisive look at how government manipulates, controls, and ultimately devastates the lives of the poor—and what Americans must do to stop it. Once a hustler and welfare addict who was chewed up and spit out by the ruthless welfare system, Star Parker sheds much needed light on the bungled bureaucratic attempts to end poverty and reveals the insidious deceptions perpetrated by self-serving politicians. “Star Parker rocks the world. She is an iconoclast that must be listened to and reckoned with.” ?Sean Hannity “Star Parker’s important new book helps advance the understanding—critical for all Americans—that prosperity does not come from government and politics but results from men and women of character and high moral fiber living and working in freedom.” ?Larry Kudlow “Star Parker’s new book brings us back to eternal truths—faith, family, love, and responsibility.” ?Dr. Laura Schlessinger “Casts new light on the redemptive power of freedom.” ?Rush Limbaugh

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary rendition—the practice of abducting criminal suspects in locations around the world—has been criticized as an unprecedented expansion of U.S. police powers. But America’s aggressive pursuit of fugitives beyond its borders far predates the global war on terror. Uncle Sam’s Policemen investigates the history of international manhunts, arguing that the extension of U.S. law enforcement into foreign jurisdictions at the turn of the twentieth century forms an important chapter in the story of American empire. In the late 1800s, expanding networks of railroads and steamships made it increasingly easy for criminals to evade justice. Recognizing that domestic law and order depended on projecting legal authority abroad, President Theodore Roosevelt declared in 1903 that the United States would “leave no place on earth” for criminals to hide. Charting the rapid growth of extradition law, Katherine Unterman shows that the United States had fifty-eight treaties with thirty-six nations by 1900—more than any other country. American diplomats put pressure on countries that served as extradition havens, particularly in Latin America, and cloak-and-dagger tactics such as the kidnapping of fugitives by Pinkerton detectives were fair game—a practice explicitly condoned by the U.S. Supreme Court. The most wanted fugitives of this period were not anarchists and political agitators but embezzlers and defrauders—criminals who threatened the emerging corporate capitalist order. By the early twentieth century, the long arm of American law stretched around the globe, creating an informal empire that complemented both military and economic might.
