Book English Learners Access to Postsecondary Education

Download or read book English Learners Access to Postsecondary Education written by Yasuko Kanno and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does a public high school, despite having resources and educators with good intentions, end up graduating English learners (ELs) without preparing them for college and career? This book answers this question through a longitudinal ethnographic case study of a diverse high school in Pennsylvania. The author takes the reader on a journey with seven EL students through their last two years of high school, exploring how and why none of them reached the postsecondary destinations they originally aspired to. This book provides a sobering look into the systemic undereducation of high school ELs and the role of high schools in limiting their postsecondary options.

Book Postsecondary Education Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities Research to Practice

Download or read book Postsecondary Education Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities Research to Practice written by Debra Hart and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiting high school is an exciting and tense experience for all students and families. But when students with intellectual disabilities consider what will happen next, the possibility of college is usually not promoted as a viable option. This needs to change. Receiving a college education and experiencing that very exciting time in life is as beneficial for students with intellectual disabilities as for students without. The growth that students experience in college can be measured in a number of areas, including academic and personal skill-building, employment, independence, self-advocacy, and self-confidence. For students with intellectual disabilities, this growth is also reflected in increased self-esteem when they begin to see themselves as more similar to than different from their peers without disabilities. Being part of campus life, taking classes (whether auditing or for credit), and learning to navigate a world of high expectations develops the skills needed for successful adult life. When individuals keep college in the mix of possibilities as students with intellectual disabilities explore which steps to take after high school, it makes the statement that they believe in their potential for success. This brief presents the following information about postsecondary education for students with intellectual disabilities: (1) Definitions of "postsecondary education" and "intellectual disability"; (2) An overview of postsecondary education options; and (3) Research findings on current knowledge of postsecondary education options and outcomes, with recommendations for improving access to postsecondary education. A bibliography is included. (Lists 6 web resources.).

Book Public Policy and College Access

Book excerpt: Volume 19 of Readings on Equal Education takes a hard look at the impact of state and federal policies on college access. Since passage of the Higher Education Act of 1965, differences in access for low-income and middle-income families have been an important issue. This volume suggests a new approach to policy research on college access and provides information on the impact of federal and state financial and school reform policies. Statistics (NCES) studies and expose the serious errors made in these studies. These chapters show how the errors were made, consider the implications for federal higher education policy, demonstrate the critical need for a reanalysis of the NCES databases, and reanalyze the access challenge using NCES databases. Section II examines changes in the state role in promoting access to higher education. Articles focus on the impact of change in state policies on state student grant programs, academic preparation, and postsecondary encouragement.

Book Increasing Postsecondary Education Access and Success

Download or read book Increasing Postsecondary Education Access and Success written by Katie Broton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Closing the achievement gap depends on highly effective public schools, strong community support, and family involvement. Raising the overall rates of achievement in Minnesota is a vital part of this goal. Research has shown that pre-college outreach programs improve college access for underrepresented groups, including low-income, first-generation, and minority students. The most effective programs do this by promoting college awareness and attendance, improving academic skills, building student self-esteem, and providing role models. One study found that such programs can nearly double the odds of college enrollment for moderate- to high-risk students. Key features of an effective outreach program are discussed in this paper. [This briefing paper presents highlights of the report "Increasing postsecondary enrollment: A literature review of the effectiveness of outreach programs" with additional information from Perna's "Improving the transition from high school to college in Minnesota".].
