Book A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines History and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines History and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church Classic Reprint written by John Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Larger Catechism of the Doctrines, History, and Polity of the Methodist Protestant Church This little volume claims no originality of thought. It is an humble attempt to collect and arrange a brief and simple Outline Of the principal doctrines of the Methodist Protestant Church, as the author learned them from the fathers and the doctrinal standards recognized by the denomination; together with some Of the leading facts connected with the history Of Methodism and Of the Methodist Protestant Church; and a full and complete view of the polity or system of government adopted by the Church. When a person gets a clear outline of any subject, it greatly assists him in Obtaining a fuller and more comprehensive view of it in detail. Such an out line, except as it relates to the polity Of the Church, is all that is contemplated here. It is presumed that even this brief view will be valuable to members Of the Church who may not care to extend their investigations further, and that it will be useful in giving those who have no knowledge of our Church, a pretty correct idea of its doctrinal views, its origin and present condition, and its republican system of church government. The author can not but think that it will also be useful to young men entering the ministry in our Church, and convenient for even Older ones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genius and Mission of Methodism: Embracing What Is Peculiar in Doctrine, Government, Modes of Worship, Etc As a consequence of such abounding iniquity, the love and zeal of the Christian church waned almost to extinction, and her ministry became powerless. The purest, stoutest hearts quaked for fear, and all hope would have been abandoned, had not the promise of God remained as a security against the destruction Of the Church, and her history borne testimony to her safe passage through darker and more troublous periods. In the midst of the greatest corruption and darkness, during the successive eras of Christianity, a chosen seed, as an indestructible germ, has always existed, and, under the Providence of God. Book United Methodist Doctrine

Download or read book United Methodist Doctrine written by Scott J. Jones and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout this ebook, Scott J. Jones insists that for United Methodists the ultimate goal of doctrine is holiness. Importantly, he clarifies the nature and the specific claims of ""official"" United Methodist doctrine in a way that moves beyond the current tendency to assume the only alternatives are a rigid dogmatism or an unfettered theological pluralism. In classic Wesleyan form, Jones' driving concern is with recovering the vital role of forming believers in the ""mind of Christ, "" so that they might live more faithfully in their many settings in our world."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Methodism The measures adopted by the Methodist Church were also peculiarly well calculated to promote individual godliness, and secure a diffusion of its principles. In order to secure oversight and pastoral care in the absence of the preacher, the church was divided into small classes, and placed under the care of leaders of Christian experience and prudence, whose duty was to meet their classes weekly for their instruction, to encourage them to seek high attainments in a Christian life, and to report to the minister such as might walk disorderly. There were also bands, or small associations of Christians, pledged to promote each other's spiritual welfare. The public meetings of the societies, the quarterly meet ings, the protracted meetings, and the camp-meetings, bringing a great number together, were well calculated, by the earnestness and the variety of their exercises, to awaken and continue reli gions interest, and give opportunity, not only for personal improve ment, but for the acquisition of the power to communicate truth. The exercises of these meetings, and the responsibilities of the various subordinate offices of the church, gave an excellent practi cal training for the ministry.
