Book The Oxford Handbook of European Islam

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of European Islam written by Jocelyne Cesari and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, Muslim countries and Europe have engaged one another through theological dialogues, diplomatic missions, political rivalries, and power struggles. In the last thirty years, due in large part to globalization and migration from Islamic countries to the West, what was previously an engagement across national and cultural boundaries has increasingly become an internalized encounter within Europe itself. Questions of the Hijab in schools, freedom of expression in the wake of the Danish Cartoon crisis, and the role of Shari'a have come to the forefront of contemporary European discourse. The Oxford Handbook of European Islam is the first collection to present a comprehensive approach to the multiple and changing ways Islam has been studied across European countries. Parts one to three address the state of knowledge of Islam and Muslims within a selection of European countries, while presenting a critical view of the most up-to-date data specific to each country. These chapters analyze the immigration cycles and policies related to the presence of Muslims, tackling issues such as discrimination, post-colonial identity, adaptation, and assimilation. The thematic chapters, in parts four and five, examine secularism, radicalization, Shari'a, Hijab, and Islamophobia with the goal of synthesizing different national discussion into a more comparative theoretical framework. The Handbook attempts to balance cutting edge assessment with the knowledge that the content itself will eventually be superseded by events. Featuring eighteen newly-commissioned essays by noted scholars in the field, this volume will provide an excellent resource for students and scholars interested in European Studies, immigration, Islamic studies, and the sociology of religion.

Book Is Jih d a Just War

Download or read book Is Jih d a Just War written by Ḥilmī Zawātī and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an analytical study of jihad (just war) which helps to focus the attention of human rights and minority groups to a cause that should have been a focal point of their concern for several decades now. The concept of jihad has sometimes been abused by irresponsible leaders within the Islamic world and used to inflame the passions of those for whom the richness of Islamic law is reduced to slogans and billboards. Similarly, jihad has been invoked by Western analysts who are completely ignorant of the Islamic tradition, to justify assertions of evil intent on the part of millions of the Muslim faithful. Zawati analyzes both Western and Islamic legal concepts and attempts to point a way out of this mess. He draws on primary sources, including books, articles and official documents, and his book should be interesting reading for Muslims who seek to better define their relations with the non-Muslim world, and for anyone wishing to escape the caricature of orientalism and the end-game of clashing civiizations.

Book Marxism Christianity and Islam

Download or read book Marxism Christianity and Islam written by Julian Roche and published by Academic Studies PRess. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Garaudy was for many years at the centre of the French Communist Party but was eventually expelled for his liberal views. In the Seventies, he strove to bring Marxism and Christianity together, to include all humanity in a project to set all people free. What emerges from Garaudy’s project is a very modern Marxism, with its emphasis on the individual, its ecological politics, and in its insistence on religion as central to human emancipation. Although Garaudy himself became frustrated by the failure of Marxism and converted to Islam, eventually resulting in his work being discredited in the West, it is certainly possible that Garaudy’s project represents a good, perhaps even the best, starting point for Marxism in today’s world.

Book Idealism beyond Borders

  • Author : Eleanor Davey
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2015-12-17
  • ISBN : 1316445240

Download or read book Idealism beyond Borders written by Eleanor Davey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major new account of how modern humanitarian action was shaped by transformations in the French intellectual and political landscape from the 1950s to the 1980s. Eleanor Davey reveals how radical left third-worldism was displaced by the 'sans-frontiériste' movement as the dominant way of approaching suffering in what was then called the third world. Third-worldism regarded these regions as the motor for international revolution, but revolutionary zeal disintegrated as a number of its regimes took on violent and dictatorial forms. Instead, the radical humanitarianism of the 'sans-frontiériste' movement pioneered by Médecins Sans Frontières emerged as an alternative model for international aid. Covering a period of major international upheavals and domestic change in France, Davey demonstrates the importance of memories of the Second World War in political activism and humanitarian action, and underlines the powerful legacies of Cold War politics for international affairs since the fall of the Iron Curtain.
