Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 19/11/2001: This text addresses important questions about Australia's population size and distribution which are likely to dominate the country's politics in the 21st century. The book's approach to the population question begins with a broad analysis of Australia's wellbeing. A decline in the quality of life for many Australians, growing inequality and conflict suggest that Australia is overpopulated. Population size, however, does not explain Australia's problems. These are considered in the following chapters in the context of the shortcomings of Australia's democracy; the costs of maldevelopment in the distribution of the population; the mismanagement of resources; and the level of foreign ownership. The book then focuses on the changing external milieux and Australia's engagement with Asia. This analysis provides an understanding of building pressures for Australia to accept more migrants as well as the desirability for migration to promote Australia's integration with its Asian neighbours. In the last two chapters, the book examines the main domestic forces at work for a bigger or smaller population. It argues that Australia should be more generous and accept many more people than it presently does. Australia has room for many more people. Population distribution, however, is a critical issue in Australia's quest for a better future and population growth needs to be diverted away from the eastern seaboard and the main cities of Melbourne and Sydney to regional Australia. The book makes a case for population growth in coastal cities as part of northern Australia's regional development.

Download or read book Clinical Challenges written by Debbie Picone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurses work across the health care system in a great variety of roles. From patient care to administration, nurses see where the pressures are, and how well we are managing to look after some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Clinical Challenges explores contemporary issues central to nurses' work. Part I explores clinical concerns such as pain and wound management, the role of the nurse practitioner, and the effects of extending life. For many years the health sector has been coping with cutbacks in government funding, and Part II examines how this impacts on the way we handle social illnesses such as suicide and drug dependence, as well as the needs of our growing ageing population. Part III looks at management issues affecting nurses including the growing use of business strategies and rhetoric in the health care system, and the introduction of information systems and of more flexible ways of working. Written by nurses working in a variety of professional roles in the system and critiqued by experts in the field, Clinical Challenges offers valuable insights for nurses at every level, including students.

Book excerpt: Are we happer, freer, healthier, wealthier, safer, more comforatble, more interesting? How we answer these questions depends on how we define and measure 'a better life'. How and what we measure to show if life is improving is what this book explores. Measuring Progress is the most wide-ranging exploration of lifestyle improvement yet undertaken. It considers social, economic and environmental perspectives. Twenty-three of Australia's leading researchers have contributed chapters on indicators of national performance and what they tell us about the quality and sustainability of life in Australia. The contributors consider how these measures can be improved. The book includes additional commentaries from nine senior bureaucrats, academics and community representatives. Tipics covered include: new measures of progress, the use and abuse of GDP, the causes of correlates of happiness, what 'Middle Australia' thinks about the changes reshaping their lives, income distribution and poverty changes in the workplace and the family, health and well-being, measuring civic and social trust, the state of the environment. Measuring Progress is a major contribution to a debate that could alter ra
