Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive treatment of the air wars in Vietnam. Filling a substantial void in our understanding of the history of airpower in Vietnam, this book provides the first comprehensive treatment of the air wars in Vietnam. Brian Laslie traces the complete history of these air wars from the beginning of American involvement until final withdrawal. Detailing the competing roles and actions of the air elements of the United States Army, Navy, and Air Force, the author considers the strategic, operational, and tactical levels of war. He also looks at the air war from the perspective of the North Vietnamese Air Force. Most important for understanding the US defeat, Laslie illustrates the perils of a nation building a one-dimensional fighting force capable of supporting only one type of war. ,

Book Tales from the Desert Borderland

Download or read book Tales from the Desert Borderland written by Lawrence J. Taylor and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taylor brings an ethnographer’s eye, ear, and many years of experience to this fictional portrait of life along the US/Mexico desert border. In these linked short stories, readers are taken on a wild ride from San Diego to Nogales, into Mexican and Chicano neighborhoods, failed spas and defunct mining towns, rambling Native American reservations and besieged Wildlife Refuges. Along the way they will share the conflicts, calamities, and occasional triumph of an engaging cast of characters. While these tales treat such familiar border themes as drug- and people-smuggling or hybrid and conflicting cultures and identities, they do so with a literary flair that revels in the rich diversity of border life as well as in its ambiguity, ambivalence, irony and often unexpected humor.

Book I Will Survive

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.

Book Hollywood Highbrow

  • Author : Shyon Baumann
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05

  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Book Guide to Air Force Historical Literature 1943 1983

Download or read book Guide to Air Force Historical Literature 1943 1983 written by Kenneth Schaffel and published by Nimble Books. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical bibliographies are among the strongest-selling titles in Nimble Books' public domain list for the simple reason that they are an excellent value for money. There is no better way to be confident that you know almost everything there is to know about a given body of historical literature. This reproduction, originally published by the Office of Air Force History of the United States Air Force in 1985, is according to the Foreword by Richard H. Kohn, then Air Force Historian, "a comprehensive listing of histories, monographs, chronologies, and special studies issued by the Office of Air Force History and historical offices throughout the Air Force. It excludes the periodic (monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual) command and unit histories. The primary purpose of the Guide is to bring together all of the writings of the Air Force History Program in one convenient bibliography.""We believe this is a valuable resource for commanders and staffs, for it includes a wide variety of studies on how the Air Force carried out planning, operations, research, logistical activities and a host of other important operational and support functions in the past. These studies address a wide variety of issues and problems. They can provide insight into 'why things are the way they are, ' as well as what worked and what did not, and the reasons why. Such information is invaluable to those responsible for today's plans and operations. At the very least, used wisely, the historical information in these studies will help Air Force people make informed decisions and avoid repeating past mistakes."Other bibliographies from Nimble Books include: Annotated Bibliography of the Space Shuttle (Two Volumes)] Fifty Years of Flight Research: An Annotated Bibliography of Technical Publications of NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, 1946-1996Submarine Warfare in the 20th and 21st Centuries - A BibliographyHistorical Bibliography of Sea Mine WarfareLight Infantry Forces: A Bibliography- Guide to Captured German Documents Torpedoes: A List of References in the New York Public Library

Book Images of a Lengthy War

Download or read book Images of a Lengthy War written by Joel D. Meyerson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of a Lengthy War makes available for study and reference some of the important photographs of the Vietnam War, accompanied by brief narrative. The volume covers the three decades of the Army2s experience in Vietnam, from the early years of advice and support to the French government through active intervention with combat forces and gradual withdrawal. Many of the photographs were selected to show the complex nature of the war, in particular demands of conducting counterguerrilla operations while undertaking conventional campaigns against enemy regulars. While the focus of the work is the American military, policy decisions in Washington and political developments in Vietnam are also amply illustrated to place the war in context. As a unique form of evidence, the photographs are a valuable resource in recalling the look of Vietnam.

  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2006-01-01

Download or read book The Limits of Air Power written by Mark Clodfelter and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the use of air power in World War II and the Korean War, Mark Clodfelter explains how U. S. Air Force doctrine evolved through the American experience in these conventional wars only to be thwarted in the context of a limited guerrilla struggle in Vietnam. Although a faith in bombing's sheer destructive power led air commanders to believe that extensive air assaults could win the war at any time, the Vietnam experience instead showed how even intense aerial attacks may not achieve military or political objectives in a limited war. Based on findings from previously classified documents in presidential libraries and air force archives as well as on interviews with civilian and military decision makers, The Limits of Air Power argues that reliance on air campaigns as a primary instrument of warfare could not have produced lasting victory in Vietnam. This Bison Books edition includes a new chapter that provides a framework for evaluating air power effectiveness in future conflicts.
