Book Lung Cancer and Personalized Medicine

Download or read book Lung Cancer and Personalized Medicine written by Aamir Ahmad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first of two volumes on personalized medicine in lung cancer, touches on the core issues related to the understanding of lung cancer—statistics and epidemiology of lung cancer—along with the incidence of lung cancer in non-smokers. A major focus of this volume is the state of current therapies against lung cancer—immune, targeted therapies against EGFR TKIs, KRAS, ALK, angiogenesis; the associated challenges, especially resistance mechanisms; and recent progress in targeted drug development based on metal chemistry. Chapters are written by some of the leading experts in the field, who provide a better understanding of lung cancer, the factors that make it lethal, and current research focused on developing personalized treatment plans. With a unique mix of topics, this volume summarizes the current state-of-knowledge on lung cancer and the available therapies.

Book Advances in Radiation Oncology

Download or read book Advances in Radiation Oncology written by Jeffrey Y.C. Wong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concisely reviews important advances in radiation oncology, providing practicing radiation oncologists with a fundamental understanding of each topic and an appreciation of its significance for the future of radiation oncology. It explores in detail the impact of newer imaging modalities, such as multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and other novel agents, which deliver improved visualization of the physiologic and phenotypic features of a given cancer, helping oncologists to provide more targeted radiotherapy and assess the response. Due consideration is also given to how advanced technologies for radiation therapy delivery have created new treatment options for patients with localized and metastatic disease, highlighting the increasingly important role of image-guided radiotherapy in treating systemic and oligometastatic disease. Further topics include the potential value of radiotherapy in enhancing immunotherapy thanks to the broader immune-stimulatory effects, how cancer stem cells and the tumor microenvironment influence response, and the application of mathematical and systems biology methods to radiotherapy.

Book Lung Cancer Clinical Progress

Download or read book Lung Cancer Clinical Progress written by Robin Downey and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cancer that arises in the lung is called lung cancer. It can be of two kinds- small-cell and non-small-cell lung carcinoma. It is caused by long-term tobacco smoking, exposure to radon gas, second-hand smoke, asbestos and other forms of air pollution. Lung cancer can be prevented by avoiding smoking and exposure to air pollution. It usually arises due to a genetic damage to DNA and epigenetic changes. These changes affect the normal functions of the cell such as cell proliferation, DNA repair and programmed cell death. The lungs are commonly affected by the spread of cancer arising in other parts of the body. Primary lung cancers commonly metastasize to the bones, brain, liver and adrenal glands. The current research dimensions in lung cancer treatment include immunotherapy, epigenetics, and combinations of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This book is compiled in such a manner, that it will provide in-depth knowledge about the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. It includes some of the vital pieces of work being conducted across the world, on various topics related to lung cancer. It includes contributions of experts and scientists, which will provide innovative insights into this disease.

Book Updates in Advances in Lung Cancer

Download or read book Updates in Advances in Lung Cancer written by Joan H. Schiller and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lung cancer remains a major cause of cancer deaths throughout the world. It is an extremely lethal neoplasm: 80-90% of patients who develop lung cancer will die of their disease. The purpose of this book is to update cancer specialists, pulmonary physicians, thoracic surgeons and general practitioners about the many recent advances in the treatment, prevention and biology of lung cancer. Despite the overall poor prognosis for patients, a number of new chemotherapeutic drugs and regimens have been developed which result in a clinically meaningful improvement in survival for patients with nonsmall cell lung carcinoma. Four chapters in this book are devoted to reviewing these new drugs and drug combinations (paclitaxel, docetaxel, vinorelbine, gemcitabine, topoisomerase inhibitors). Advances in the management of locally advanced nonsmall cell and small cell lung cancer are considered, including combined-modality treatments using chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. Results of recent trials involving chemoprevention agents are also reported. Finally, the latest progress in understanding the molecular biology of this disease, and how it might impact on the clinical management of lung cancer patients, is discussed.

Book Targeted Therapies for Lung Cancer

Download or read book Targeted Therapies for Lung Cancer written by Ravi Salgia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contextualizes translational research and provides an up to date progress report on therapies that are currently being targeted in lung cancer. It is now well established that there is tremendous heterogeneity among cancer cells both at the inter- and intra-tumoral level. Further, a growing body of work highlights the importance of targeted therapies and personalized medicine in treating cancer patients. In contrast to conventional therapies that are typically administered to the average patient regardless of the patient’s genotype, targeted therapies are tailored to patients with specific traits. Nonetheless, such genetic changes can be disease-specific and/or target specific; thus, the book addresses these issues manifested in the somatically acquired genetic changes of the targeted gene. Each chapter is written by a leading medical oncologist who specializes in thoracic oncology and is devoted to a particular target in a specific indication. Contributors provide an in-depth review of the literature covering the mechanisms underlying signaling, potential cross talk between the target and downstream signaling, and potential emergence of drug resistance.

Download or read book Lung Cancer Metastasis written by Venkateshwar Keshamouni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Metastatic lung cancer is responsible for more than ninety percent of lung cancer related deaths. However, relatively little progress has been made in understanding the process of lung cancer metastasis. The two main aims of this book are a) to introduce clinical aspects to basic scientists and basic molecular and cellular concepts to clinical investigators, in order to promote collaboration and foster much needed translational research; and b) to introduce new and emerging concepts and approaches in metastasis research to lung cancer research community at large. In this attempt, the book will cover a broad spectrum of subjects ranging from the current trends in the clinical management of the metastatic disease, to the systems biology approach for gaining insights into the mechanisms of metastasis. Some of the subjects covered will include: defining basic hallmarks of a metastatic cell, the concept of tumor stem cells, epithelial-mesenchymal transitions, evasion of immune-surveillance, tumor-stromal interactions, angiogenesis, molecular imaging and biomarker discovery.
