Book Geologic Effects on Behavior of Beach Fill and Shoreline Stability for Southeast Lake Michigan

Download or read book Geologic Effects on Behavior of Beach Fill and Shoreline Stability for Southeast Lake Michigan written by Larry E. Parson and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monitoring program to evaluate the effects of beach nourishment material placed on a cohesive shoreline in southeast Lake Michigan was conducted at St. Joseph, MI, by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. In conjunction with this monitoring program, this particular study focuses on a 6-km (3.7-mile) section of shoreline extending southward from the jetties of St. Joseph Harbor. Some of the geological variables that affect cohesive shores were investigated. The primary objective of the study was to develop an improved understanding of the relationship between the movement of the cohesionless sediment (both fine and coarse grain components) and the irreversible downcutting of the underlying glacial till at the St. Joseph project site. Data collected during the monitoring program were input into a 2-D numerical model to describe the cross-shore sediment process and to predict the profile response to storm conditions with the influence of the underlying glacial till represented as an erosion-resistant sublayer. The 2-D profile change tests were performed at 10 of the profile locations.

Book Coastal Sedimentary Environments

Download or read book Coastal Sedimentary Environments written by R.A. Jr. Davis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard A. Davis The zone where land and sea meet is composed of a variety of complex environ ments. The coastal areas of the world contain a large percentage of its population and are therefore of extreme economic importance. Industrial, residential, and recreational developments, as well as large urban complexes, occupy much of the coastal margin of most highly developed countries. Undoubtedly future expan sion in many undeveloped maritime countries will also be concentrated on coastal areas. Accompanying our occupation of coasts in this age of technology is a dependence on coastal environments for transportation, food, water, defense, and recreation. In order to utilize the coastal zone to its capacity, and yet not plunder its resources, we must have extensive knowledge of the complex environ ments contained along the coasts. The many environments within the coastal zone include bays, estuaries, deltas, marshes, dunes, and beaches. A tremendously broad range of conditions is represented by these environments. Salinity may range from essentially fresh water in estuaries, such as along the east coast of the United States, to extreme hypersaline lagoons, such as Laguna Madre in Texas. Coastal environments may be in excess of a hundred meters deep (fjords) or may extend several meters above sea level in the form of dunes. Some coastal environments are well protected and are not subjected to high physical energy except for occasional storms, whereas beaches and tidal inlets are continuously modified by waves and currents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The main purpose of the study was to identify and classify hazard areas on the lakeshore. There were 109 areas ... classified as critical, moderate, or limited hazard areas ... The most immediate threat on the lakeshore is flooding and erosion in low-lying cottage areas ... Average recession rates since 1938 were measured from aerial photographs at 89 points throughout the county."--Page ii.
