The Balloon Company which may now be taken to include aeroplanes and airships will be employed for general strategical and tactical reconnaissance at all periods of a campaign and for observation of artillery fire. It will probably also be utilized for transport of maps and special reports, for transport of general and staff officers for special meetings and occasionally to give higher commanders a bird's-eye view of the battlefield. It is under the direct control of the Commander-in-Chief (F. S. Regs., I., 5 - 5). Each Balloon Company can put only one captive balloon or set of kites in the air at one time. The constitution as regards aeroplanes and airships is not yet laid down. 8. The Bridging Train is intended to supplement the small amount of rapid bridging equipment allotted to the Field Companies. Military Education and the British Empire is the first major scholarly work to address the role of military education in maintaining the empire throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Bringing together the world’s top scholars on the subject, this book places distinct national narratives – Canadian, Australian, South African, British, and Indian – within a comparative context. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1908-11, Vol. 2 The Royal Engineers Institute Council having decided to issue, for the future, the Professional Papers in pamphlet form only, the present 6 Papers are the last to appear as a Volume. Published first in quarto form, the Professional Papers were started in 1837 on the suggestion Of Lieut. (afterwards Sir W) Denison, re. In 1851 they were altered to Royal Octavo and again in 1877 to Demy Octavo, appearing annually until 1905. In that year the alteration in the form Of the r.e. Journal led to a corresponding change in the Professional Papers which were again henceforth issued in Royal Octavo but in pamphlet form only. It was, however, decided at the time to publish the combined papers in a Volume from time to time for the few Officers who still desired them in that form. This practice is now to be discontinued, and Vol. II. Of the New Series concludes therefore the long list of bound Volumes Of the Royal Engineers Professional Papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The product of over twenty-five years of research, Beneath Flanders Fields illustrates the evolution of military mining, leading to its deployment in the greatest siege in military history - in the trenches of the Western Front." "In the words of the tunnellers themselves, and through previously unpublished photographs - many in colour - as well as contemporary plans and drawings, this book reveals how this most intense of battles was fought - and won. Few on the surface knew the horrific details of the tunnellers' work, yet this silent, claustrophobic conflict was a barbaric struggle that raged day and night for almost two and a half years, and one which generated mental and physical stresses often far beyond those suffered by the infantry in the trenches. On 7 June 1917 at Messines Ridge, the tension was broken with the opening of the most dramatic mine offensive in history."--BOOK JACKET.
