Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists at the Great Lakes Laboratory conducted field electrofishing and habitat surveys as part of the Productive Capacity of Fish Habitat project. This report documents the locations and dates of preliminary field surveys conducted 1988-89 and the protocols used for electrofishing, habitat sampling, and data processing. It also describes the equipment and instrumentation utilized for field sampling and documents additional 1988-89 surveys that were not part of the Productive Capacity project. Catch data are summarized for all locations and years.

Book Defensible Methods of Assessing Fish Habitat

Download or read book Defensible Methods of Assessing Fish Habitat written by W.F. Baird and Associates, Coastal Engineers and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures now exist to quantify the impacts of physical changes on productive capacity of fish habitat. These procedures allow the evaluation of pre- and post-development scenarios, including any compensatory measures. This report applies these procedures to two case studies consisting of the construction of a 150-metre long headland in Hamilton Harbour and the construction of marina breakwaters in the Bronte Outer Harbour, Lake Ontario. The investigations focused on evaluating the indirectly modified areas, or those affected by changes to wave and current patterns caused by the presence of the new development. Specific impacts examined include changes to surficial substrate and depth, changes to macrophyte coverage, changes to wave conditions, and the relationship between physical processes and macrophyte growth. A new criterion for limiting local wave conditions associated with the survival of macrophytes is proposed and recommendations are made to refine and substantiate such a criterion.

Book Methods of Modifying Habitat to Benefit the Great Lakes Ecosystem

Download or read book Methods of Modifying Habitat to Benefit the Great Lakes Ecosystem written by Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compilation of 47 methods of modifying habitat to benefit the Great Lakes ecosystem. The information is intended to raise awareness of Canada-US progress toward restoration objectives in the Great Lakes, and describes methods for rehabilitating, restoring, enhancing, mitigating or preserving habitat. For each project the following information is provided: project title, contact information, agencies involved, restoration goal, project type, background and rationale, regulatory considerations, criteria, project design, implementation, degree of environmental intervention, costs, biological assessment, measures of success, and key references.

Book Approach to the Physical Assessment of Developments Affection Fish Habitat in the Great Lakes Nearshore Regions

Download or read book Approach to the Physical Assessment of Developments Affection Fish Habitat in the Great Lakes Nearshore Regions written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures now exist to quantify the impacts of physical changes on the productive capacity of fish habitat, allowing the evaluation of pre- and post-development scenarios, including any measures undertaken to compensate for habitat loss. This report outlines the methods and techniques available to evaluate the physical changes to fish habitat in the Great Lakes nearshore region. It begins with an overview of the applicable parts of the Fisheries Act respecting alteration or disruption of fish habitat, as well as of the types of projects that can affect fish habitat and the shore types and natural processes occurring on the Great Lakes. The report then describes approaches for assessing physical conditions and processes, including the preparation of information on pre-development site conditions, definitions of physical habitat characteristics, and assessment of impacts (areas lost) and may be required for assessment of physical impacts for different shore and project combinations.
