Book excerpt: The hyperfragment production by fast pi-meson interactions is shown to be well explained by the model of Jones et al. In particular, the short-range hyperfragments are shown to be predominantly very heavy and not light as had been supposed. The conclusions of Silverstein, Fry et al and Lokanathan et al, are critically examined with recourse to this fact. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an analysis of 1240 interactions in Ilford K-5 emulsion are presented. A detailed study of the characteristics of several hundred stars was made. The emission of hyperons, K mesons, pi mesons and hypernuclei was determined. Each star was studied under 2500X magnification for the existence of a double center, a recoil and Auger electrons. A search was made for free lambda hyperons emitted from these interactions, and five events were located. The analysis is directed toward determining how often the strangeness of the K(minus) meson is accounted for by the emisssion of a visible strange particle or a neutral hyperon. The probability of a lambda hyperon being trapped to form a hypernucleus can then be estimated. The observed characteristics of parent stars was correlated with recent developments in the proposed model for heavy hyperfragments production. The study is divided into three projects: an analysis of charged hyperon production; an examination of interactions in flight; and a determination of the frequency of lambda hyperon production, both free and bound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of 133 interactions in nuclear emulsions initiated by 26.7 Gev/c protons was examined. It was found possible to separate the events fairly well into two groups, one in which almost all of the shower particles were emitted in a single nucleon-nucleon collision in a target nucleus, the other (cerca 20%) in which the shower particles were produced in two or more successive collisions in a target nucleus. Analysis of the effective target mass distribution of the events and the (log cot theta) distribution, where theta is the laboratory emission angle of a shower particle, supported the above interpretation and indicated that an appreciable fraction of the events in the first group might be attributed to peripheral nucleon-nucleon collisions.
