Such histories in the mass would be Of the utmost use to any worker desirous of checking his results and drawing conclusions therefrom, and would form a mine of wealth for the independent investigator. What might we not learn from them as to what cases were suitable and what unsuitable for grafting, how soon a graft might be success fully undertaken, the best material for the graft, the best way of fixing it, whether or not to immobilize the jaw, and as to numbers of the details which experience alone can teach? Or of the treatment of wounds and scars, the relative value Of various antiseptics, of sunlight, violet rays, high frequency currents, ionization, massage, and cupping At present all these methods are in use, but we fail to benefit from them as we might because the results are not collated and made accessible. In the better equipped hospitals the machinery for carrying out such a system already exists, in others it does not, and I would ask anyone who has to do with the organization of a hospital or depart ment for the treatment of jaw injuries not to fail to demand it. Such systematized case-taking is worth while, and would save its cost over and over again, in that it tends to better results and quicker results, but it can only be carried out if the practitioner be provided with adequate assistance, directed to economize his own time. In a large department it might be done by a registrar specially detailed for the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We now expect the patient's hips to be raised as a matter of course for all pelvic operations, and those who have always been accustomed to this do not think of what operating without it meant. Very little consideration however is necessary to recognize that, for example, the removal of the uterus for cancer of the cervix by the abdominal route as practised at the present day would be well nigh impossible with the patient on a horizontal table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, Vol. 3: Session 1909-10; Part II, Odontological Section, Otological Section, Pathological Section, Surgical Section, Therapeutical and Pharmacological Section The Relation of Dentistry to other Branches of Medicine and its Bearing upon the Public Health. IN considering to what subjects I Should devote attention in the course of my address to you this evening, it has occurred to me that I could not do better than say a few words on the relation of dental surgery to other branches Of the healing art, and on the very important bearing of dentistry upon the public health. In early times, when the principal work of the dental specialist was the extraction of decayed and Offending teeth, these matters doubtless seemed to Offer but little scope for prolonged discussion. The immediate removal of the disturber of the bodily weal, like the prompt banishment or decapitation by some Eastern tyrant of unpleasantly obtrusive courtiers, was held to be a procedure based on sound surgical principles that must in all cases be adopted. It saved the patient from a continuation of his suffering and its consequences in medical treatment also it afforded the operator who might happen to be fairly skilful an easy escape from all responsibility. What was the cause of decay in the tooth, what the loss of teeth might mean to a patient, and how far his general health had been affected by their disease were not considerations that seemed to invite reflection. The awkwardness of the professional situation when too hasty an application of the forceps had resulted in the drawing of the wrong tooth could always be remedied by the subsequent extraction of the real offender. In the good old days the condition of the teeth of the inhabitants of civilized Europe, so long as it did not entail suffering. Such cases are more safely treated by condenser couch diathermy fulguration.1 By this method the amount of destruction can be Observed during the whole of the treatment, and, though its action is limited in depth, by repeated séances extensive growths of considerable depth can be safely removed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, Vol. 1: Session 1907-8; Part III, Odontological Section, Otological Section, Pathological Section, Surgical Section, Therapeutical and Pharmacological Section; Inde I mention these facts to Show what an absolute demonstration was given of the enormous value of this great discovery. In spit-e of this convincing proof, the new system, as is the case with every innovation, met with opposition in many quarters; and one of my earliest student recollections is that Of a clinical lecture in which an eminent London surgeon declared that the new method of treatment of wounds had proved in his wards to be a failure. He was, however, soon afterwards convinced that the failure was due to imperfect methods, and became a warm advocate of antiseptic surgery. In our days it has become the only justifiable method Of treating wounds, and its effects have been studied in all directions, in the treatment Of all conditions of disease, with the greatest benefit to suffering humanity. Lord Lister's prophecy in 1869 has been amply fulfilled, when he said: The antiseptic treat ment is continually attracting more and more attention in various parts of the world, and whether in the form which it has now reached, or in some other and more perfect shape, its universal adoption can only be a question of time. The noble institutions of which our country is justly proud, admirably adapted alike for the treatment of the Sick and the instruction of the student, will then be cleared of the only blot that now ittaches to them. They have been cleansed from this blot, and it is impossible to estimate the number of valuable lives that have been saved ince that time by the universal adoption of the antiseptic treatment. His genius so brightly and so fruitfully illuminated medicine that it seems only right for us to meet to commemorate his centenary, chiefly because the object of this Society is the promotion of both the science and the art of medicine, but also because he was one of our foundation members and contributed two papers to the first volume of our Transactions. He was born in the Vicarage at Berkeley in Gloucestershire, on May 17, 1749. He was the third son of Stephen Jenner, the vicar. His mother was the daughter of the Reverend Henry Head who had formerly also been vicar of Berkeley. On both Sides he came of an ancient family. Many of his relations were clergymen; his father had been tutor to one of the Earls of Berkeley and, as we Shall see, this family always had a great regard for Edward Jenner. Soon after his birth, his father died and he was brought up by his eldest brother, the Reverend Stephen Jenner.
