Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two academics, one Jewish and one Muslim, come together to show how much their faiths have in common—particularly in America. This book provides a braided portrait of two American groups whose strong religious attachments and powerful commitments to ritual observance are not always easy to adapt to American culture. Orthodox Jews and observant Muslims share many similarities in their efforts to be at home in America while holding on to their practices and beliefs. As Samuel Heilman and Mucahit Bilici reveal, they follow similar paths in their American experience. Heilman and Bilici immerse readers in three layers of discussion for each religious group: historical evolution, sociological transformation, and a comparative understanding of certain parallel beliefs and practices, each of which is used as a window onto the lived reality of these communities. Written by two sociologists, one a religiously observant American Jew and the other an American Muslim, Following Similar Paths offers lively insider and outsider perspectives that deepen our understanding of American diversity and what it means to be religious in a modern society.

Book Social Justice in Islam

Download or read book Social Justice in Islam written by Deina Abdelkader and published by IIIT. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western theoretical approaches of modernization, development, social progress and interaction, have failed to understand the dynamics of the Islamic revival. Deina Abdelkader, in this seminal work argues that questions of social justice are indelibly tied to the phenomenon of contemporary Islamic resurgence as the quest for social justice is in fact motivated by the Shari’ah- hence an integral part of Islamic life and weltan-shauung. Using the two tools of maqasid and maslahah, and through the examination of the dialectical link between fiqh and reality, the author shows their indispensability as important methodological tools for the study of the social sciences and, indeed, of social phenomena.

Download or read book Toward Global Cultural Renewal written by Mona Abul Fadl and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s quest for Islamization is here put into historical and ideational perspective. It traces the movement to a newfound awareness among Muslims, cognizant of the immense worth and potential of their heritage, yet clamoring to emerge from their actual debilitation, whether enforced or self-inflicted. The author considers and evaluates various contemporary approaches to truth and compares them to the Islamic “mode of knowing,” discovering it to be a superior and beneficent foil to the existing paradigms and epistemes of modern culture. This book offers a blueprint for a new kind of scholarship, one that invokes the “vocational ideal” and has the power and the vision to absorb intelligently cultural diversity and transmute it into an overarching and transcendent, but realistic and humane, critique. The credentials of Islam to buttress and enlighten such an endeavor are presented with clarity and conviction. And while the pervasive and protean malaise of contemporary civilization is attributed to the sense of vacuity and absence of higher purpose brought about by the renunciation of God, that of the Muslim Ummah is seen to be rooted in intellectual lethargy. However, and despite the colossal challenges which face the quest for renewal and reintegration, challenges that are unflinchingly tackled and delineated in this paper, the final view is one of hope and affirmation in both human recoverability and the latent power of Islam to lead man out of the present morass.

Book The Qur an and the Sunnah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Taha Jabir Al-Alwani
  • Publisher : International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT)
  • Release : 1995-01-01
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 83 pages

Download or read book The Qur an and the Sunnah written by Taha Jabir Al-Alwani and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long now, the Qur’an and the Sunnah, great sources of strength, purity, knowledge and inspiration for the Ummah, have not been adequately tapped. Skirting their peripheries or over-dwelling on one or two of their multifarious facets and tributaries has done a disservice to the immense potential of the fountainhead, while denying the Ummah- indeed the whole world- innumerable benefits from them. Now that the Ummah is becoming increasingly aware of its own problems as well as latent powers, and yearns to revive its leading role in the forging of history and cilization, the issue of drawing on the wellspring becomes more relevant and urgent. Revisiting these two sources is no longer a scholastic, academic, nostalgic, or escapist indulgence, but a great journey of discovery that promises untold rewards. Paradoxically, the journey through the resplendent pages of the Qur’an and the Sunnah to a time and place in the past should yield a more mature awareness of the dynamics of social and historical change and a human being’s role on earth, honing and sharpening the Muslims’ capacity to deal with the demands of the present moment and the challenges of the future. Suggestions for a new reading of the Qur’an and the Sunnah have been put forward from Islamic and other angles in the recent years. In this book Dr. Al-Alwani and Dr. Khalil, two well-known Muslim thinkers, contribute their views for a proper approach to these sources from within the Islamic framework.

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the Muslim world today, if anything is self-evident across the Muslim world today it is that the Ummah is badly in need of reform. On this point it can be stated with confidence that Muslims are agreed. Poverty and injustice characterize the face of Muslim lands from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Pollution and corruption are the order of the day in the societies where the gulf between them and the developed countries of the world has never been wider. Politics in the Muslim world are all too often the politics of deprivation, and culture the culture of despair. “Crisis in the Muslim Mind” examines the intellectual and historical roots of the malaise that has encompassed the Ummah and threatens to efface its identity. Firs published in Arabic in 1991, this important work (in an abridged English translation) is designed to familiarize educated and concerned Muslims with the nature of the crisis confronting them, and to suggest the steps necessary to overcome it.

Book Towards an Islamic Theory of International Relations

Download or read book Towards an Islamic Theory of International Relations written by AbdulHamid AbuSulayman and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 1993 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent events have demonstrated that one of the most important fields of study in this century is world order. The contribution of this book to this field is that it attempts to lay the intellectual foundations for a reconsideration of what constitutes a truly Islamic world order. Perhaps the words of the late Professor Ismail al-Faruqi, in his scholarly introduction to this work, best describes the landmarks of such an order; "The world order of Islam would confer upon every person by virtue of birth and humanity, the ultimate right and honor, namely, the capacity to think and make up one's mind as to which millah one wishes to belong and hence, by which law one desires to order one's life and that of one's dependents."In dealing with his subject, the author has had to return to the sources of Islam, the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and develop a methodology for dealing with them in a creative and practicable manner. In doing so, he examines the methodology developed by the early generations of Muslim scholars and finds it limited by its legalistic approach. Thus, much of the value of his work lies in its discussion of methodology and in the social sciences in general, by means of methodology developed from a purely Islamic perspective.Originally submitted as a doctoral dissertation, and then revised for its publication in 1987 as "The Islamic Theory of International Relations", this edition, retitled "Towards an Islamic Theory of International Relations", has undergone serious editorial revision, and may now be seen to convey the author's pioneering ideas in a way that befits their importance.

Book An Introduction to Islamic Economics

Download or read book An Introduction to Islamic Economics written by Muhammad Akram Khan and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 1994 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary economic systems have failed to solve the economic problems of mankind. The failure. of socialism is too o.bvious to need any documentation. The track record of capitalism is far from being promising. Although a small minority has achieved unprecedentlY high material standards of living, a vast majority lives under conditions of abject PovertY. The problems of unemployment, inflation, poverty amidst affluence, unequal distribution of wealth, frequent bouts of business recession, environmental pollution and ecological imbalance still bedevil man's present life and threaten his future. The present book contends that the Islamic economic order has the potential of ushering in an age of human bliss; and the resources to build a free, just and responsible world for everyone on the earth.

Book Ijtihad Occasional Papers

Download or read book Ijtihad Occasional Papers written by Taha Jabir Al-Alwani and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering that the accepted juridical sources of Islam are valid for all times and places, ijtiahd may be described as a creative but disciplined intellectual effort to derive legal rulings from those sources while taking into consideration the variables imposed by the fluctuating circumstances of Muslim society. Consigning ijtihad to be annals of history is a denial of the rationalistic, egalitarian, and humane aspects of a realistic and durable Faith. The act would be a repudiation of the requisites of changing times and of the clamoring need to rid the Ummah of its present baggage of malaise and enable it to forge ahead, inspiring other nations and communities. It can be proved historically that the Ummah only entered its current crisis after ijtihad fell into disuse and was gradually replaced by taqlid. It is only through ijtihad that Muslims will be able to construct a new specific methodological infrastructure capable of addressing the crisis of Islamic thought and so, propose alternatives for the many problems of the contemporary world. The courage that needs to accompany such a mission is tremendous, the methodology massive an meticulous. With this work, Dr Al-Alwani has contributed to the debate on this vital issue. The very way he tackled it-sometimes with boldness, sometimes with caution-shows that the debate is not an open-and shut issue, and that it needs to be widen quickly in view of the urgency of the situation.
